No More Signings In Montreal, Ryder Going In Arbritration…

RDS is reporting that the Canadiens may be done with free agency…

Bon Gainey confirmed that if something were to happen, it would probably be a trade. He also confirmed that the Canadiens weren’t interested by Alexei Yashin and/or Brendan Shanahan. Finally, Michael Ryder and the Montreal Canadiens are going in arbitration. No words on what Michael Ryder wants though.

Overall, a very disappointing summer for Montreal.

Are you actually surprised? When was the last good summer in Montreal? 🙂

Overall, the signings were not that bad (although Hamrlik is overpaid).  It'll be enough to once again to fight for a playoff spot assuming the team stays as is.  It's a position that we as fans should be accustomed to at this point.

montreal has the cap room to make an intelligent trade.  let's see if it happens.

overall these signings werent that bad i mean sure we didnt get smyth or breire but do we ever get a top free agent this is good t me we needed size and grit and we got it sure we overpaid but everyone else who got a free agent did too. all we need is some more scoring hopefully some young guns step up like kostityn and hopfully higgins ryder and plekanec have a great year. souray was overrated all he did was pp so now we have a responsible physical d-man i like these pick-ups smolinski is a bonk replcement obviously bonk was wanting to much mioney probably more than we payed smolinksi so stop complaining. to bad about ryder tho i like him i hope he stays in mtl. all we need is SHANAHAN and were done this guy is what we need he scores brings leadership isnt afraid to play physical and brings that winning feeling and never takes a night off hed be good with kovalev because shanahan playing with kavalev means shhanny never takes a night off and hopefully kovalev will feed and learn odf that. otherwise my faith is still in gainey

i just read that over and what i said about ryder came out wrong i mean its too bad about him going to arbitration ..he must want a lot of money maybe more than were willing to pay him

Well, personally I don't have any trust in Gainey anymore. He may not be a bad general manager (although I think he's not as good as some of you guys think he is) but we don't share the same vision at all. And I know, he's an experienced general manager while I'm at home, typing this…but it doesn't change the fact that this team is clearly not heading to direction I wish it would.

Sure it would've been nice to see a local boy like Brière, but he shouldn't have been our priority in my book. Everyone knew he would sign a huge deal somewhere, and I'm just not sure I would have been ready to spend so much money on him. Smyth and Drury would have been better fit. I know Gainey tried with Smyth, and there's no way he could've matched the offer Drury got from New York.

Which is why I think Gainey should've tried to sign the "less popular" free agents. Players like Preissing and Hannan would've been my priority since we had to fix our defense. Bélanger would've been next and then Kozlov. Then, if they're still available, you go after the big names like Smyth or Drury.

I always thought free agency was a good way to add the missing pieces to your team. More often than not, when you're trying to turn your franchise around with free agents, it backfires. And, in my opinion, it did and that's why Hamrlik is on his way to Montreal. Don't get me wrong, I like him as a player, but I just hate the contract we gave him…feels like "Deja Vu" to me. Stuart, Markov or Vaananen would've been better in my opinion, and maybe even cheaper.

As for Michael Ryder, I really don't care. Never liked him, and I hope we can sign/trade him somewhere for something good. I know he's our only 30-goal scorer, but that's pretty much all he brings to the table. I like guys like Smyth and Drury because they can get the job done, no matter what you're asking them to do. Ryder doesn't fit "my" philosophy…
