Don't forget that Turco is WAY more important to his team than Belak is. The stick in the face was purely accidental (controlling your stick for a goalie can be way less precise with all the equipment than for a forward) while Belak was simply being careless.

Put it that way, if you were in a tight playoff race and your #1 goalie would be suspended for 4 of your 5 games left in the season, you'd think that this is a pretty severe suspension.

There's nothing Turco did that deserved him to be suspended up into the playoffs.

His fault, but an accident nonetheless.

Agreed. This is a well-balanced argument. I thought I detected a goalie-bias when you mentioned “how badly the goalies are protected by the referees”. Truth is, everybody is badly protected by the referees.

Couldn’t agree with you more man. If they could draw the Avs, they would at least take them 7 if not knock them out. If they drew San Jose, everyone seems to agree that San Jose wouldn’t even be the favorite!

Yeah, and that's why I say that he got what he deserved. 4 games was fair enough, considering the importance of those 4 games.

Being a goalie doesen't mean that I want the goaltenders to be protected at all time by the referees or anyone. In fact I think that a goaltender playing the puck outside of his net becomes a 3rd defensemen and players should be allowed to hit him. That way, a goalie would think twice about playing the puck outside of his crease.

If there was no visor... then yes Ossi would have been down for the count.

Turco whether aiming for the chest or not... caught Smyth in the face. You have control over your stick... Belak, Turco... etc. Whether or not it was ment in the chest or not.

the player could have his face protected too by wearing a visor.

It's good to hear a goalie's view on this subject. This year in particular I've seen NHL goalies taking shots (Cloutier, Theodore) at players that I thought were uncalled for, though. Shot deflector, screen and agitator have almost become positions in their own right and goalies have their hands full. But when goalies aren't allowed to be touched yet they can be as physical as they want and play the puck all they want, it's hard to be sympathetic with their plight.

As far as MartyTurco is concerned, if a player has to be responsible for his stick at all times, that includes the goalie as well. His stick never should have been anywhere near face level, accident or no.
