Oates a Duck

17 minutes was all it took to witness the first UFA signing. Adam Oates has signed with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for 2 years at 3.5 million a year. Wow, talk about career suicide.

If anybody really cares, the flyers had given Anaheim permission to talk with Oates before the deadline. Im sure Bobby Clarke had a nice long laugh after that phone call.

  2. trademan says:

Wow. I can’t belive this. A good move for the Ducks and a horrible move for Oates.

  3. saksfan says:

!!! You weren’t supposed to give out the source. !!!

  4. Hockeyman93 says:

I didnt, but I guess thats why Micki threw it in at the bottom.

  5. saksfan says:

Anyways, forget about my comment. The Flyers had Roenick, Oates, Dopita, Primeau and Murray on the Center. They received Handzus and then considered Dopita expendable so he was traded to Edmonton. Oates signed with Anahiem and now they have Roenick, Primeau, Handzus and Murray…a tiny bit weaker maybe??

  6. big_booty says:

Why the hell would Oates sign out in Anaheim, to work on his suntan?

For a 40-something player to sign with a team that is not a playoff contender is confusing.

He must want to break the season assist record by setting up Kariya.

  7. Hockeyman93 says:

I think the “Flying V” may have lost some of its luster with this signing. Kariya will have to pull Oates in his wheelchair just so Adam can keep up. Oates won’t do anything except wack people in the shins with his sawed off hockey stick as they skate buy.

  8. trademan says:

I agree. This is a stupid signing. Has Oates even won a cup yet. i think not.

  9. Habfan1234 says:

In my previous comments I stated that some surprise teams will make some ripples in the free agent market and with this signing I don’t seem like such an idiot in mentioning some mid to high-level free agents going to these teams.

  10. InsideNHL says:

They only traded all of their Future for Oates including a great young goalie, and now lose him, yeah great move….. gave their future away for a second round shut out in the playoff’s.

  11. habs_88_4life says:

    Everyone stop!

Now picture Oates beside Kariya. A match made in heaven. But on the other hand, why Oates? Why Anaheim?

  12. Flyers_01 says:

I wish everyone would stop saying that philly has traded away it’s entire farm system and every pick for the next 3 years for Oates.

Would it have looked better if they had resigned Oates? Probably .. but the Flyers didn’t lose anything important. The Flyers still have their farm system and was able to get the 4th overall pick in the first round by giving up very little on top of having 2 first round picks next year in a deeper draft.

Enough of the doom and gloom already. Let me know when anyone or any pick we’ve traded away to get Oates makes an impact in the NHL.

  13. Sportswriter says:

Strong move by the Ducks, they obviously have something up there sleeve.

  14. keon says:

I think this is a great move for the Ducks. The get an AMAZING playmaker with 20 years of NHL experience who can still contribute 50+ assists/season. Oats is going to be a big influence on all of the young guys on the Ducks roster: Jeff Friesen, Marc Chouinard and Joffrey Lupul.

(I know, Friesen has put in a lot of years, but he is still a relatvely young guy)

Oats is going to have a similar position to Brett Hull in Detroit. He had a large mentorship role with Boyd Devereaux and Pavel Datsyuk.

  15. Glen says:

Any other ingenius comments for us?

  16. DG says:

How but just plain old weak. Bobby Clarke just cemented his role as hockey’s dumbest General Manager.

  17. TC_4 says:

I thought for sure Oates would go to Toronto and play on the second line with Mogilny and have a chance at a cup that he has never got. I guess some guys are just happy with what they got. As for Anaheim, this appears to be a desperate attempt to keep Karyia happy.

  18. DG says:

The Anaheim Mighty Ducks have just improved with this signing, and, while the Ducks still look like a longshot for the National Hockey League playoffs, there is a slight possibility that Anaheim might improve drastically to get to the playoffs. Adam Oates has yet to play a game in an Anaheim uniform, and the Ducks have some competent players in Paul Karyia, Oleg Tverdovsky, Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Marc Chouinard. I know that, most likely, Anaheim will miss the playoffs, but stranger things did happen- hey the New York Islanders went from horrible to great with three signings- Alexei Yashin, Michael Peca and Chris Osgood- so Anaheim may not be done yet. That’s why they play the games.

  19. Forsberg21 says:

What the Hell. Aneheim? There had to be more teams interested in him. He didnt even sign for that much. Vancouver needs a centre especially since they aren’t going to sign Cassels. I think he thought he was signing with the other LA team, the one who can actually challenge for the cup.

  20. titans says:

Nice move Adam! Bwaa hahahahaha! Dumbass!

  21. big_booty says:

No, he hasn’t. Got to the finals a couple of years ago with the Capitals, who were steamrolled by the Red Wings.

He probably just wants to tell his kids “Daddy works for Disney now!”

  22. JohnFlan22 says:

Yea ducks! It’s Your Birthday! Give it to me one more time! This will be the first time in Kariya’s career he wil be playing with a SKILLED playmaking Center! Ducks played not too bad in second half and Kariya is gonna have some huge stats if he and oats can stay healthy, I think this is the first move I’ve seen the ducks make to actually better themslves in a LONG time. Go Ducky’s GO!

  23. jtshade1977 says:

If the before comment is true (Clarke gave ANA permission to talk to Oates), what will Philly get back for that. Look what happened last year with Philly and Phoenix. PHX gave Philly permission to talk to J.R. before free agency open. Then, PHI traded Langkow to PHX for “future considerations”. That sounds like a way to get around any tampering accusation. I remember Dallas was pretty upset about not even having a chance to talk to Roenick. Maybe PHI will get a guy like Salei or some draft picks from ANA for “future considerations.”

Congradulations Duck Fans. It’s been years since Disney has done anything to help the team. Enjoy Oates.

For those of you who say it was a bad decission for Oates to sign. I’m sure he has his own reasons. There were better teams who would have paid more money to sign Oates. Teams with a shot at the Cup. Maybe Oates is happy without having won one (I’m not sure he hasn’t though, someone please correct me if I’m wrong). If Anaheim is a half way decent team when he retires, and he can say that he had something to do with that, he should be proud because turning the Ducks into a winner is almost as hard as winning the Cup.

Duck fans enjoy Oates, cause you never know how long before Disney makes another move at improving your team.

Oates, enjoy Anaheim, it’s a great city and if you can turn it into a winner, I would rank that as one of your greatest accomplishments (although being the best passer in NHL history, yes better then The Great One, is something to be proud of too.)

  25. Chandlerisback says:

    dont count on it

oates wasnt going to be resigned and they had no interest for a long time

it was a gesture by Clarke to Oates.

Hes trying to undo the rumors that hes a jerk to his players.

Anaheim wont have 2 give nothing up.

  26. Chandlerisback says:

Amad must have been drunk and passed out in Anaheim.

Then the Ducks managment took his hand and inked the deal.

adam woke up so hungover he didn’t care.

  27. titans says:

I guarantee this is the last time you’ll ever hear Adam Oates’s name untill he’s inducted into the Hall of Fame! Oates apparently is all about the $$$ so I don’t feel sorry for him.

  28. saksfan says:

    Hey…thanks for agreeing!! lol…

  29. jammer21 says:

    will they call oates “wheels”?
