Odd salary numbers

I recently noticed some odd payroll numbers with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The NHLPA site and TSN both report Mats Sundin’s salary for 06/07 as $7.6 million and Bryan McCabe’ as $7.15 million.

These figures (Sundin’s, at least) were changed within the last week or two. Sundin salary counted $6.3 million against last year’s cap and McCabe is set to earn $5.75 million.

Until recently, both sites had Sundin at the same $6.3 million and McCabe at $5.75 million for 06/07.

Does anyone know why their salaries are inflated this year? Is there some bonus clause or odd salary structure in these contracts I haven’t heard about?

Thanks in advance.

the salary that counts against the cap is an average so it won’t have changed.

when one website makes a mistake, a bunch of them do, because they copy numbers off of each other.

I have wondered the same thing, especially McCabes, 7.15mil? I don’t think so. I haven’t trusted TSN’s numbers since the get go. First of all I clearly remember Audin re-signing for $750,000 and I am yet too see anyone put that done as the number he’s getting this year. Then there’s kilger, he signed a 3yr 2.7 million contract. Thats $900,000 a year and yet everyone has him down for 1.2mil this next year? I haven’t believed or trusted anybodies numbers the whole off season. I’m just trusting JFJ and the crew to hve all there fianaces in order and know what they are up too.

With saying that brings up a few questions with other teams like Vancouver and New Jersey. Can someone tell me what the hell Vancouver is up too? They have become the new Florida panthers of the west. They have no team and a goalie, what the hell is that going to get them? Looking at there “so called budget on TSN” they are royaly screwed they have a need for about ten guys to fill a 22 man roster and the ONLY have around 7.5million to spend. Lets not forget though thts according to TSN’s wonky payrolls. They have Luongo only making 6million? They have Linden on there for 1.5mil and I thought tht they didn’t pick up the option on him. could be wrong but if I’m not then someone tell me what they are going to do. You can only ice so many minimum paid players and be competitive, and as it is they don’t have alot of talent too ice. Who in the NHL is going to want Cloutier and his contract? Name any team and I’ll give you three reasons why the team suggetsted wouldn’t want dan cloutier and his ballooned salary. Nonis has screwed himself in that department, got gitty at the thought of getting Luongo and forgot about the CAP. Interesting to see wht is going to happen in Van.

    Sundin’s contract is

    $6.84M ’05-’06

    $7.6 M ’06-’07

    $4.56M ’07-’08

The average of the 3 years is used against the cap.

    $19M / 3 = $6.33 Million

Also you have to remember there will be 2 important numbers now. Actual cash paid in any given year of the contract, and the value that goes against the cap.

McCabe signed for 5 years @ 28.5M. There was probably some kind of signing bonus that automaticly goes into the first year of the contract. He will recieve by the end of ’06-’07 $7.15M cash in his bank. But the cap amount gets spread over the 5 years equally or $5.75M each year.

With that said in the final year of his contract he could be paid only $2M but his cap value will still be $5.75M

    aubin signed for about 600K,

vancouver is screwed, especially on defence

i think cloutier will be back into good shape come next season. but nonis will hav a tough time trading him.

They are actually paying McCabe 7.15 million this season, but the cap hit, as per the rules of the new cba, is the average of the contract, which in this case is 5.75 million. Which means by the end of McCabe’s contract he will be making less than 5.75 million per season.

I can’t think of a team thatwould want to trade for him. Especially when you can trade for Martin Biron, who’s salary is less then Cloutiers. I think Cloutier going to be riding the pine in Van for the season.
