Ohlund Re-signs!

TSN.ca is reporting that Vancouver Canucks defenseman Mattias Ohlund has re-signed with the Canucks. Ohlund has signed a 4 year contract extension, terms of the deal are undisclosed as per team policy.

Depending on the amount agreed to this could spell the end of forwards Matt Cooke and Jarkko Ruutu in Vancouver, both may be casualties of the salary cap.

Will not be the end of either Cooke or Ruutu. It has been reported that Ruutu is close to signing, though his loss would not affect the club at all. Cooke on the other hand seems to be very far apart with the club on salary. However, as he is a RFA, the canucks (as they have done in the past with other young players) are not afraid to force RFAs into signing multi-year deals through the threat of making them sit out the season

Four years, wow. This guy is a very good defenseman. A lot of people think that Jovanovski is Vancouver’s number 1 defenseman, but it is really Ohlund. Ohlund is the guy they trust more to throw out on the PK and go up against top lines every night, as well as play regularly with the man advantage. He reminds me a lot of Kenny Jonsson, in that they are both excellent defenders, but they don’t get a lot of press.

Good move, great signing, hes worth it

St.Louis signed a deal for 6 years 5.2 per season with Tampa

Matt Cooke is another of my favorite players, he doesn’t blow people away with his numbers but he plays solid. He reminds me a lot of Curtis Brown, a skilled potencially 2nd line center who is a solid defensive player and a PK shutdown man. He has offensive talent and can score, but generally doesn’t score more than 15 or so goals a year. But as a 3rd line defensive center 15 goals and around 30-40 pts is a solid season as long as he wasn’t overpaid.

Wow someone who actually knows what they’e talking about,Nonis will sigh both even if it puts them over the cap because he has until oct.1 to get back under it ,also Nonis is at 24 players if they sigh Cook and Ruutu so when they send two to the minors(22man roster) before the season starts that will drop the payroll 900 k min.

I agree 100%, but Cooke isn’t what Vancouver needs right know. They need solid defence and signing Ohlund i think was more logical than worring about Cooke. Cooke is an excellant player who gives the team depth and size

I live in Vancouver and am able to watch almost 60 or so Canuck games on TV and, because of this, have realized how valuable and important Ohlund is to the club. He plays a solid two-way game and is a rock on defense who makes few mistakes, unlike Jovanovski. An injury to Ohlund would hurt the team more than an injury to Jovo. He is one of the best in the NHL and, IMHO, a very underrated player. In short, this is an immensly important long-term signing for the Canucks because of the quality defensman that they will be retaining.

It also appears as though they did not overpay for his services. He is to receive, on aggregate, 3.5 million dollars a season, which, when compared to the defensmen signings this offseason, is under-market value.

I was just wondering about Cooke, Ruutu and Chubarov. Glad you let me know what is going on. I am a Bruins fan, but I like the Canucks too, being from BC. I think Cooke and Ruutu are both great energy guys they need to keep, but what about Chubarov…I don’t know much about him, just thought he was mentioned to have a lot of untapped potential…have they given up on him?

  12. Westcoastexpress says:

Chubarov has chosen to play in Russia this year

  13. Westcoastexpress says:

Cooke isn’t a big player, he just plays that way. He is an agitator who now unfortunatly will be on his way out of Vancouver

Great signing. I really can’t believe they made it 4 years. I hope they didn’t pay too much though.
