Ottawa Senators in no rush to make a deal before Olympic break
If it sounds like the Senators are taking a cautious approach on what they’ll do next, they are. Murray and his staff need to decide what they are willing to pay to get a rental and do they need someone for the playoff push alone?
“We identified what our team is right now and possible targets for possible trades,” said Dorion.
“Not that we’re going to make any trades but we always have to be ready for that possibility (with) players who we feel could help us in the short-or-long term.”
With the trade deadline set for March 5 and only a week of action after the Olympics end, it may make sense for the Senators to bring somebody in before the break so they can get to know the team during the mini-training camp that will take place here.
That likely won’t be the case.
“It can be good in some ways. We have to wait to see where we are the Olympic break,” Dorion said. “You have to wait to see where are at the trade deadline and that will dictate a lot of what happens in the future.
“I like the way we’re going as a team and the direction that we’re taking.”
A lot of the focus on the amateur side was about preparing for the draft. Yes, the Senators gave up their No. 1 pick in the NHL entry draft to Anaheim for Bobby Ryan but that doesn’t mean a lot.
