Ottawa to trade, again.

The Ottawa Senators have already made 2 deals this year, getting Peter Bondra and Todd Simpson. But there are strong rumors going around that they will make more deals, possibly with the Buffalo Sabres.Whenever the Sabres want to trade someone, John Muckler usually has the inside track being such good friends with Darcy Regeir and knowing his former team so well. He has already made 2 trades with Buffalo since he’s been in Ottawa, acquiring Rob Ray and Vaclav Varada. The Ottawa Sun has reported that the Sens are discussing a trade that would send Shane Hnidy to the Sabres for Curtis Brown, who would be Ottawa’s 4th line winger.

This deal would then make room for Ottawa to acquire that top 4 defenceman that has been talked about. Muckler has said he wants to have 9 capable defencemen going into the playoffs, and barring injuries, they will have 9 if they stick to this team. However, if they plan on acquiring that upper echellon d-man, they will have to move someone out. If Hnidy goes for a forward, it will open up a spot for a new guy to come in. Names that have been talked about are Jay McKee, and Alexei Zhitnik. Jason Smith also has been rumored as a possibility, but with Edmonton being serious about making the playoffs, it is unlikely that he will be traded.

This is all speculation, but if Hnidy goes for a forward, another deal for a defenceman will be made.

  1. scottyboy says:

What do the Sens have to offer for a Zhitnik or McKee? Jason Smith could go, but that won’t happen until the very last minute before the deadline, if the Oil feel they are too far out of the playoff race. Same goes for Nedved.

  2. mattf says:

you think they’d dump nedved just after aquiring him? i think thats pretty doubtful

  3. TC_4 says:

Why don’t they go after Taylor Pyatt???

  4. frankd0g says:

nedved went to the oilers buddy

  5. bodragon says:

The Sabres need a better defenceman than Hindy.

Count Zhitnik out. He is Buffalo’s best defenceman, and a contract extension is probably in the works.

McKee will be expendable as his lack of physical play and oft-injured knee warrants him a ticket out of town.

  6. Petr89 says:

Actually, the original trade makes little sense to me. Edmonton isn’t going to sign Nedved (or pick up his 5 million option) next year so I think them flipping him off to a playoff club makes more sense than anything else. I’d actually like to see the Wings pick him up if Draper AND Datsyuk will both be out for substantial period of time.

  7. sensman99 says:

If Buffalo’s looking for a tough, scrappy defenceman then Hnidy would be a good choice. But where would Brown fit in on Ottawa? You would either have to take off Vermette or Neil, so Vermette goes back to the minors for Brown?

Of course, Vermette and a 6th round pick maybe could probably get Smith then.

  8. tr8der_info says:

Ahhh, Ottawa sucks! They dont have a proper salary either, they can add 1 million to their salary at the most, but like I said eairlier, they got NO ONE to trade, even their top prospects suck!

  9. Tradedude says:

dude, seriously, ***** off!!! like seriously, if you want to last on this site you will have to stop dissing every team other than toronto and stop saying toronto is the best because they arent!!! its been 37 years for god sakes, if you wanted to bash a team it’d be this team for their droubt. But seriously I am a leaf fan and I just HATE it when people diss teams with out having a reason. ya you say ottawa sucks, right? well they have 84 points and leafs have 86, so if ottawa happens to pass the mighty leafs then what would that make the leafs? just wondering.

so just stop bashing teams without a proper opinion, you can bash them if you have some thing important to say, but saying that they suck and thats that is just pure childish.

    and stop using bold!

    go leafs go

  10. sensman99 says:

Ottawa sucks? Have you checked the standings? Or the stats? Hossa and Alfredsson are in the top 8 in scoring in the league. We got people to trade, like Rachunek or Pothier. We’re stacked with players, and we don’t need a high salary- less money’s better if you have a good team. Ottawa’s got the best right side in the league- Alfredsson, Hossa, Havlat. Chara could win the Norris. We almost got to the Cup final last year, missing out on a goal where Jeff Friesen speared Havlat. I saw it on the replay.

Anyway, we made it farther than the Leafs and Flyers. Who says Ottawa sucks? Not me, cause Ottawa’s one of the best teams in the league, so any moron whose stupid enough to put in that Ottawa sucks, read this.

  11. sensman99 says:

Nice one, man. I hate the leafs still.

  12. PurpleHelmet says:

Your team gets humiliated very year. You as a Sens fan must be used to it by now!

  13. viger100 says:

I am still convinced that although Muckler doesnt come out and say it he will be going out and getting a goalie before the deadline. If Lalime doesn’t preform well in the next couple games ( a big one in Philly) then expect him to do some dealing. As far as defence men go I think they can trade Rachuneck and a draft pick for ‘just about’ any of the upper tier defencemen in the league that arent going to the playoffs.

  14. bleedingblu says:

Ok, I wouldn’t go as far as saying the Sens suck but I do HATE that team and everytime the Leafs beat them it does bring me joy and satisfaction.

That I have to say is the best rivalry in the league.

“..at least they made it further than the Leafs and Flyers…”

Do you recall the previous 4 years before that?

The word sweep ring a bell?

Either way I can’t wait for the next meet. I got my ticket ready!!

    Go Leafs Go!

  15. rixter17 says:

Tradedude is right!!! You’re an idiot!!! Ottawa has an awesome regular season team, but nothing for the playoffs!!! If Ottawa had the same freedom of spending like the Leafs do, the rest of the league would be in alot of trouble!!!!

  16. malooga says:

Given how the Sabres ran off that impressive streak a few weeks back without McKee, he’s as good as gone. He hasn’t been the same since Regier dealt his boy Rhett Warrener, and he’s probably wanted out for a while (despite being married to one of the hottest Buffalo Bills cheerleaders in history).

Ottawa can have Taylor Pyatt, Tiny Tim Connolly, Curtis Brown, Alexei Zhitnik, and the entire Rochester Americans roster for Zdeno Chara (I bet they still pass on this one!)

Muckler is probably going after Brown because he drafted him, and is familiar with him. So I’m sure he’s trying to give him a shot to win a Cup, just like he did for Ray, who is basically useless (but a great guy nonetheless).

Buffalo needs some muscle on the team – at FW or DF – so Hnidy wouldn’t be a bad fit. But the blueline is pretty crowded right now, so 2 or three guys would have to go. Any team can have Andy Delmore, as that move has worked about as well as Italian weaponry (settle down, I’m Italian and I think it’s funny!) Brian Campbell and his defensive lapses can get gone, too (boy, it’s a good thing the Sabres rid themselves of Jason Woolley!)

  17. bpanther83 says:

Until Ottawa beats the leafs in the playoffs, their standings will mean nothing to me or almost any leaf fan. They were once first over all, and we beat them 4 straight. And one year we beat them with injuries to all our star players. No disrespect, but if Ottawa wants to say there better than us, beat us in the playoffs. And more than once, cause u would think by now they would win 1 round by luck. So at least 2 in a row.

  18. bpanther83 says:

Ottawa onnly made it that far cause they didn’t play the leafs. Every year they do, Toronto wins. Mostly cause ur goalie can’t take the playoof pressure, and breaks down. Standings mean Little come playoff time. Lalime has yet to prove he can take the playoff pressure. And can u guys stop blamming all ur losses on dumb penelties? I mean God, Everyteam gets bad call or missed calls here and there, stop crying about them. And ur Captain Alfredson is a suck…I quote him in saying “Domi isn’t very nice, he shouldn’t be aloud to initimidate us like he does…” lol SUCK

  19. HabsNick says:

Can you then tell me how Ottawa went to the seventh game of the conference finals last year while the Leafs got hosed in the first round?

When was the last time the Leafs even made it to the conference finals? in ’93?

  20. HabsNick says:

How about if the Oils got Nedved so they could ship him out to a team that the Rangers wouldn’t trade with? I’m thinking Nedved will end up on the Long Island.

  21. SaskSen says:

I hope Muckler brings in another top line dman. I read a stupid rumour on Spectors about Pronger negotiations between Ottawa and St. Louis. I know i am dreaming and it won’t happen but hey it’s nice to dream.

In my opinion if they get Curtis Brown we will have an overflow of forwards. This gives us the option of adding one of them to the mix to bring in a dman. I don’t like the idea of trading away roster players from a contender though, something about chemistry. Especially when we haven’t been playing so well as a team lately.

Ideally if the Brown trade goes through I think Rachuneks time is done in Ottawa. It wa his blunder that cost us lat year, and throughout this year he hasn’t shown and progression. I cannot believe he is paired with Redden. Ideally I would like to see a defensive dman come to Ottawa, if he plays with Redden think of the offensive potential that Redden could have if he was playing with someone he had confidence in other than Rachunek.

Package say Rachunek, Pothier, and a mid pick for I don’t even want to speculate on whom, but that package seems solid enough to get most anyone that’s not a superstar.

Maybe gauge the Blues interest in trading Pronger. Their team isn’t that deep and adding three good prospects (Pothier, Rachunek, and Vermette) plus a couple picks could land Pronger (ahhh the salary though). Maybe include Prusek as the Blues have no goalies. But for sure Rachunek out, someone reliable in, screw offensive upside we got offense we need somebody committed to playing D, and giving Lalime some help.

Ideally we could have:(if everyone returns, Varda might now be back for the playoffs)

    Varada (if healthy)-Bonk-Hossa

    Schaffer-White-Alfredsson

    Fisher-Spezza-Havlat

    Brown-Van Allen-Neil

    Redden-Pronger (or some other dman)

    Phillips-Chara

    Lesyschyn-Vlochenkov

    spare:Simpson

    Lalime

    Pusek/Emery

  22. kovalev says:

    what about Bondra

  23. bigair900 says:

man ure pretty dumb , conference finals against carolina, new jersey, and buffalo. Fah-qin retard!!

  24. bpanther83 says:

Thats easy. THEY DIDN”T PLAY THE LEAFS. Ottawa can’t play against the LEAFS in the playoffs. Or could u not read my article? Did I not say the only reason the made it that far was cause they didn’t play the leafs? Read what I say before u decide to comment on it.

  25. bpanther83 says:

Not ever gonna happen. St.Louis has gone on the record saying they WILL NOT trade Pronger. SO everyone get a life and move on.

  26. viger100 says:

Your missing Bondra and Smolinski. I dont think Van Allen will used often in the playoffs.

  27. SaskSen says:

My mistake I knew I forgot something. i missed two of them though. I knew it didn’t look right. My bad

    Now….

    Bondra-Bonk-Hossa

    Schaffer-White-Alfredsson

    Fisher-Spezza-Havlat

    Brown-Smolinski-Neil

spares: Van Allen, Varada (if they get brown he is obviously done for the year)

  28. viger100 says:

I like this a lot more. My reservations would be that Smolinski is too good for the line he plays on and that Hossa with Bondra hasn’t been working that effectively so far. Bondra was doing well with Alfie on a line with Fisher earlier but with White coming back I dont see that happening.

I really like Fisher on a line with Spezza and Havlat. I think he would be the responsible one.

  29. TheCoach says:

Until Toronto wins the cup, or even a Presidents trophy, they will not get respect from any other fans. And if Toronto wants to prove that they are good, beat NJ or Philly in the playoffs.

  30. SaskSen says:

I agree with you on the smolinski point. I think he could do wonders. I noticed how good he was doing on the PP in Bonk’s spot as well. Only problem is where to play him. I think Bondra and Hossa will be together, and Bonk is that line’s centre. White as long as he is a Sen will play with Alfy, and Spezza and Havlat will be linemates for the rest of the year at the least.

Our problem is too much depth, as bad as it sounds. Good thing that Martin rolls with 4 lines so all will get a chance to play. They had the Fisher, Spezza, and Havlat together and wow were they good. Fisher was physical and his shot coming down the wing was great (I think he blew one by Philly last year in the playoffs coming down the wing). As for Schaffer he is playing great with Alfy (but who wouldn’t) so I can’t see him moved down. Only lpace for Smolinski is on line 4 and to fill in, great utility guy.

    I guess we’ll see.

  31. TheCoach says:

Why are they still a regular season team? They got to game 7 of the conference finals. It really bugs me when people go back 2 or 3 years and base their arguments on that. Ottawa’s and Toronto’s teams were completely different back then, so nobody can make the argument that 2 years ago Ottawa lost to the Leafs, therefore they shouldn’t still be called a regular season team. People, base your comments on Ottawa’s performance in the playoffs recently!

  32. TheCoach says:

Ottawa made the conference finals last year. How is that being humiliated?

  33. bpanther83 says:

They never played toronto in the playoffs last year. ANd Ive always said they can beat other teams, but not the leafs. They still have the same goalie, and he will NEVER be able to win a cup. He has always been considered shaky in the playoffs…and toronto fans aren’t the only ones who think so.

  34. TheCoach says:

Shaky in the playoffs?????????? I suppose you’ve never watched Lalime in the playoffs. Sure, he’s having an off year but you can’t question his performances in the playoffs. He had 3 straight shutouts against the Flyers 2 years ago and he has a GAA below 2 in his playoff career.

  35. bpanther83 says:

U can use the same argument for checkmanak, but bottom line is he is not considered a playoff goalie. U go read any article written by proffesional sport writers, and they all say Ottawas weakness in the playoffs is LALIME. I have watched him play in the playoffs, EVERY year just about. And compared to the big name goalies, he’s just not there yet.

  36. TheCoach says:

You acn’t compare him to Chechmanek. Roman had good stats in the regular season, not the playoffs. Lalime has played well in the playoffs. Man, get your facts straight. He got the Sens to the 7th game of the conference final last year, and he lost to the best goalie in the world. That in itself proves that Lalime has been good in the playoffs.

  37. TheCoach says:

  38. TheCoach says:

I don’t recall the Leafs being able to take the pressure last year, losing 7-1 to the Flyers in game 7 last year. And don’t start giving me bullshit how Toronto beat Ottawa 2 and 3 years ago, because those were 2 different teams.

  39. TheCoach says:

I don’t think GMs are always truthful. If the Blues fall even further out of the race, it makes sense to trade him. Its not like they will qualify him at 9.5 million in the off-season. Why not get something for him now, then try to re-sign him for less when there is a new CBA.

  40. bpanther83 says:

If u don’t want to hear it from me, then go read it in just about ANY article that talks about Ottawas chances. They all say…Good team, questionable Goaltending, which they have said EVERY year. Lalime didn’t carry them before, the team did. So quit ur *****ing, and go read some artcles by proffessionals instead of u thinking ur Sens, are so unbeatable. I never said they couldn;’t win, I said it depends on Lalime, and he has not proven to be able to carry them.

  41. bpanther83 says:

I htink they would dump demitra and Weight b4 they would dump Pronger.

  42. jdgraham says:

The Sens are a great team. But, i think there’s something just not working for them. Maybe there’s one or two dmen that need to go, or perhaps it’s the goaltending position.

I can definitely handle Rachuneck being traded, along with Hnidy. Neither of these guys has done much for this team.

Now as for the goalie position, Lalime makes me nervous.

Last years All-Star game was something to watch, with Lalime putting on a great show for the fans.

But this year, it’s been nothing but inconsistentcy.

Perhaps the dman is partly to blame, but Lalime is definitely not the same goaltender. Has his confidence gone away? Or does he not fit into Ottawa’s strategy anymore.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the Philly/Sens game tonight, and Lalime has allowed two softies…again. The other Philly goals was because of bad defence, and the power play.

If i was Muckler, i’d keep a close eye on the important games this weekend, and prepare to make a trade before the deadline.

If Lalime doesn’t play up to par, then it’s time to go.

I think Kolzig, not knowing his price, would be the best fit for the Sens. He’s been a consistent goaltender, that has faced 30+ shots a game.

  44. TheCoach says:

How has he not proven to be able to carry them. What does it take. Winning a Stanley Cup. If thats the case then I guess Detroit, Colorado, Vancouver, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay and Dallas all have a weakness in nets. Game 7 of Eastern Conference. Thats enough proof that Lalime can be good in the playoffs.

  45. TheCoach says:

Oh and I’m not saying that the Sens are unbeatable, I just have a problem with people saying that Ottawa and Lalime are good in the regular season but crumble in the playoffs based on the fact that they lost to Toronto 2 years ago. They have proven that they can play a gritty and physical style in the playoffs.

  46. KUBLI-KAHN says:

those ice cream cones know as the Senators would be ill advised to get into a physical series with the Flyers, or the leafs for that matter. SOFT ASS *****ES those sens are and always will be……LOL,

  47. TheCoach says:

Soft my ass. Old time hockey was played in Philly tonight. It was insane. Each tema had 5 players left after everyone was ejected!!!
