Ottawa waiting for offers to roll in

The Toronto Sun is reporting that the Ottawa Senators are sitting back and waiting for offers to come in for their two quality goalies.

The article mentions that some of the possible teams that may put in offers include the Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Tampa Bay Lightning. It should also be noted that it is indicated that Ottawa is not in a hurry to make a deal and that Ottawa is having a difficult time deciding on who their clear number one goalie actually is.

If I'm a Sens fan, I'm worried about how this all plays out. So far Gerber has been by far the better of the two goalies, but he was pretty bad last year and look at his playoff numbers (8GP 1W 1L 3.48GAA .854SV%) which is where Ottawa needs their goalie to shine. Then you have Emery who is a nutcase and has been very sub-par this season but was excellent last season and stood out in the playoffs.

It's a huge gamble either way. Of course with the team the Sens have this year, they may not need their goalie to stand on his head in order to win the Cup.

Kings won't make a play for either one because Dean Lombardi has already stated that he has stopped his search for a goalie and is content with LaBarbera and Aubin.

I don't believe it!  Murray is a smart GM.  He would never trade one of his two solid goalies knowing that he needs insurance in goal given, especially given that this could be a championship year.  He needs to safeguard against injuries, slumps, etc.  It would be a huge gamble to trade either and Murray knows it.

Unless we get some serious talent the other way, I don't see anything happenin.  By serious talent, I mean a 2nd line forward to play with Alfredsson.  Murray won't do it for salary reasons, so right now there is no point in doing this trade.  If one goes however, I don't expect a goalie to come back the other way.  Cujo would be signed.

  5. muckies says:

They won't trade either one at this point. They may move one of their smaller players to get some size in the top six and go for a player like Torres to play with Kelly or Fisher – maybe move McGratton and Eaves and some of their Bingo talent like Zubov, Hnennesey or Kudelka – but no way they mess with the straongest psoition on the team – until the summer

  6. cartino says:

Murray isn't going to move a goalie this season as he really should hold onto both, they have different strength's/weakness's and may need one/both or the other depending on the circumstances!!

Ottawa may or may not pick up a forward who knows.. They typically want but never are willing to give up much more than a 2nd round pick or a disgruntled minor player. They of course will never trade a young player off there roster and since they draft so well they like to hold onto there 1st round picks!!

Murray will probably look for a player struggling with a team (hence his market value is down) and bring him in if he feels that player will fit in better with Ottawa and get rejuvenated!!! Kinda like Mike Comrie last year (Only had to give up Kangaroo-ov).

Iam hearing the Sens and Pens in a possible deal. The Pens are hurting for a goalie big time.Iam hearing a possible deal like this.

    To Pens-Gerber,Corvo=6mill
    To sens-Malone,Sydor, and Esposito=4mill

Not a bad trade for the Sens they will have 2mill and plus what they have now of Cap space to go pick up a big time player at the deadline. The pens get there goalie and a puck moving Dman what they need so bad besides Gonchar doing all the work from the back end.

While I hate Eklunds garbage he is right talking to sources this morning and I can tell you right now that it won't be Gerber leaving if he wins tonight.

Also Pheonix and Toronto are talking again. Could be Tomas Kaberle rumors staring up again……………….

If thats the case I would look at Ballard and Reinprecht and a 1st coming our way.

I don't really see that happening.  The Coyotes are not going to take on salary without dumping salary.  We wanted to give them Gerber, they made us take Derek Morris… I'd expect something like that going back Toronto's way.

  11. senators101 says:

I can guarantee you that the Sens will not make a deal with the Penguins, especially to help out their goaltending because these two teams could likely play each other in the playoffs.  The Sens will not trade with the Eastern playoff contendors… especailly trading a goalie.  Murray's not a retard.

    i think that
phoenix and LA might be looking for some keeps

  13. Neely4Life says:

Would people stop sayin Emery stood out in the playoffs, because he didnt.  He didnt steal a single game, not that he had to, but he didnt.  Its like people think the only reason the Sens made it to the finals was outstanding goaltending.  Thats like saying Chris Osgood was outstanding when the Wings won the cup.  He did what he had to.  Emery played one great month of hockey last year when the Sens were struggling, and took the job when Gerber was playin like trash.

Last year i was sayin Gerber is the better goalie, and the better team mate.  You didnt hear a peep out of him last year, this year, Emery is still tryin to steal the spot light.  Last year they had to put up with his crap because there was no other option, now Gerber has his form back.  Emery is an average goalie, nothing special, and is a distraction on any team.

My opinion, they should keep both for now, and see how the whole season plays out, then decide from there.  They have Elliot in the minors who looks like he is a solid prospect for this team, and could take the backup roll next year after a year in the minors.

Let emery have the spot light on some irrelivant team, and im sure he'll be happy.

  14. dog_farts says:

What playoffs were you watching last year?  Sure, Emery didn't steal every game and didn't look too hot in the finals, but he stole at least one and sometimes two games per round.  I agree that the Sens should hold onto both of them, but then again why would anyone take goaltending advice from a Bruins fan?

  15. Goleafs1992 says:

If Ottawa is planning to trade any of the goalies. Most of the teams would try to make a perfect offer for one of them.

  16. kilter says:

waiting for offers to roll in on their two quality goalies you,ve got to be kidding me,they are both average at best well Gerber just flat out can not handle any kind of pressure whatsoever and Emery is a good back he's proving this year that last year was he was playing way over his head, the Sens are having a difficult time deciding who there number one is because they are both now playing poorly and its not going to get any better,if the Sens want the cup they had better pick up a great proven number one goalie,if you think that teams powerful now think of what thoes guys would be playing like if they had 100% confidence in there goalie.
