Peca Close to Wearing Blue and White!

Sportsnet.ca is reporting that center, Mike Peca, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are in the process of

serious negotiations with Mike Peca on a contract.

It is being a reported the Mike Peca would take a

paycut from his 4 million dollar salary last year, to

move his family where they will be happier (in Toronto).

The Leafs are dangeroulsy close to the cap, so if they sign Peca it will be difficult to re-sign Eric Lindros.

as much as i dont like the leafs, i like peca, and would enjoy seeing the leafs play more if he were on the team!

  2. -TML- says:

what happened to roberts? i’m curious….

  3. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Ok, first of all, they won’t have any problems signing Lindros.

Second, of course he’s going to take a pay cut, he isn’t worth 4 million a year anymore!!! He’ll cost the same here as he would in any other city. Hockey players liking for Toronto doesn’t nessicarily mean pay cut. It means if the Leafs offer five million, and say the Bruins offer five million, the player will take the Leafs offer ahead of the Bruins, that’s something alot of Leaf fans need to get.

  4. quick_stick says:

At 2.25 mil a year, Roberts is too expensive at this stage of his career. Roberts would be great to have back, but only at about half that.

  5. Farva says:

As much as I like Peca and would love to see him in the blue and white, he is not worth 4 mil. Any more than 2.5 would be better spent on the Roberts trade, considering all the intangibles that he would bring.

As for Lindros, the guy wants to be here and has made it more than obvious that he will take the pay cut. For less than a mil this guy could be the best bargain in the league!

  6. CaptainDrizzunk says:

So you are saying Mike Peca and Darcy Tucker on the same team? hah!

  7. buds8 says:

Hello, I am an idiot Leaf-Hater and I feel that the media glorifies the assumption that local players want to fulfill their childhood dreams and play for the Make-Me-Laughs….or as the Be-Leafers (LOL) say “don the blue and white”…….well I guess the Lindros signing last year and the public statements made by Lindros, Peca and Carter this year have proven my sorry ass wrong!

    NOW SHAT AP!

p.s. there is a hint of sarcasm in there….look carefully!

    Go LEAFS GO!

  8. Farva says:

They have both repeatedly said that their differences are behind them, and that it hasnt been an issue for years. Besides imagine these two on the same line. Who would want to play against them?

  9. 92-93 says:

yes, they are just these rumors are the dumbest thing. i am not saying its not going to happen, but i hope it doesnt.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH with the hometown boy wants to return to his roots at an older, less useful period in his career narrative!!!!

i dont care what peca can do in the playoffs. he is too expensive. it makes more sense to resign lindros then it does to sign Peca.

  10. 92-93 says:

hmmmmmmm, who would be a better centre in the new NHL – Wellwood, Steen (who is a natural centre) … or Mike Peca…

    hmmmmmmmmm

  11. Rickler says:

If Peca takes a huge paycut i dont see a big problem with the signing, but dont the leafs have other forward positions to address than adding another centerman??? Wellwood, Sundin, Stajan and possibly Lindros. I dont think that Sundin is as effective playing 14-17 min as he is when he’s logging 20 +. I would rather the leafs go after a speedy winger or two to compliment the top 2 lines then another center.

It looks as though Mats will be playing by himself again this year.

  12. Masxs says:

how many times paulk123 went right? hes definetely gonna sign for the islanders

  13. Kamakaze says:

Didn’t Roenick also want to play for a Canadian team? I guess by “Canadian” he meant South Eastern US…

These “childhood hometown dream” stuff happens, what, 1 in every 100 rumors? I don’t doubt he wouldn’t mind playing there if that was his home town, but seriously… it’s not a guarantee, and I also haven’t heard much in the way of actual contract talks, just that he supposedly would like to play there and they would like him there. There are a LOT of other factors going into signing a player and I don’t think it’s enough to “want” it…

  14. ObjectiveImpartiaL says:

Only a leafs fan would say that. And it drives me crazy because most of you believe your city is really that sh*t hot. Its not. Its got its pros and its cons, but to believe your city is preferred by most hockey players and all the leafs have to do it match an offer is both arrogant and painfully closed minded. Its comments like that that have so many people distaining Toronto Fans. Please just acknowledge that Toronto is not better than Boston, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, ect. its just unquie as is every other NHL city.

  15. nordiques100 says:

Financially, it would be cutting it close to the cap max, but it would be the same thing if they brought in Roberts. According to the Toronto Star here is how the Leafs stand in terms of the cap:

    Blossoming Leafs

Here is how the Leafs are shaping up for the 2006-07 season. Salaries, in U.S. dollars, are as they apply to the salary cap, which is the average salary over the term of the contract. So, for example, while goaltender Andrew Raycroft will earn $1.8 million this coming season, $2 million will be applied to the salary cap. That’s the average yearly income of his new three-year, $6 million contract.

    Forwards

    Mats Sundin $6.33 million

    Darcy Tucker $1.6 million

    Jeff O’Neill $1.5 million

    Nik Antropov $1.007 million

    Alex Steen $900,000

    Chad Kilger $900,000

    Alex Ponikarovsky $712,500

    Wade Belak $670,000

    John Pohl $450,000

    Defence

    Bryan McCabe $5.75 million

    Pavel Kubina $5 million

    Tomas Kaberle $4.25 million

    Hal Gill $2.07 million

    Staffan Kronwall $612,500

    Goaltenders

    Andrew Raycroft $2 million

    J.S. Aubin $500,000

    Mikael Tellqvist $519,500

    Players with unsigned qualifying offers

    Matt Stajan $738,150

    Kyle Wellwood $500,100

    Buyout money applied to cap

    Tie Domi $1.25 million

    Ed Belfour $752,000

    Total: $38.01 million

    Salary Cap: $44 million

    Leafs wish to spend:

    $42 million

    Money left to spend:

    $4 million

According to this, there is $4 mil the Leafs can play with to hit their set limit of $42 mil. It would basically be 4.5 mil as one of their two backups will not be kept on the roster. the team would need to get at least 2 forwards and 2 blueliners to have a roster of 13 forwards, 7 D and 2 goalies.

right now the lineup looks like this:

    Steen – Sundin – Oneill

    Ponikarovsky – Wellwood – Antropov

    Kilger – Stajan – Tucker

    Belak – Pohl

    McCabe – Kaberle

    Kubina – Kronvall

    Gill

    Raycroft – Aubin or Tellqvist

If they drop Tellqvist or Aubin, they could slide in one of White, Wozniewski, Harrison, Bell or Pilar into the lineup as their salary would likely hover around 500K. any one of those blueliners could also take the place of Kronvall without much of a difference in the cap situation.

It would still leave 4 million for the leafs to get 2 forwards and another Dman on the roster.

One scenario has Gary Roberts returning at 2.25 mil and Eric Lindros being added as well for something like 750K. That would give Toronto still 1 million left over to add a blueliner perhaps someone like Coliacovo who would probably earn around 800K.

If Peca is the Leafs choice, it pretty much eliminates any chance of a return of Roberts and Lindros. Peca would have to take no more than 1 mil if the team added Roberts and that is highly unlikely if he wishes to stay a leaf long term. And peca and Lindros both are centres which is the position up front the Leafs have an abundance of. However the likes of Steen and Stajan would shift to the wing if the team added another centre.

I like Peca for what he can bring in terms of leadership and two way ability. He plays a gritty game and can still move and keep up in the new nhl. He is only 32 and worthy of a long term commitment moreso than a lindros or a roberts. instead of same old same old, he would add a difference voice in the dressing room and perhaps that is what Toronto needs as it moves into a different direction (i.e out of the pat quinn era).

I think something like a 3 year deal worth 2 million per is not too outlandish. He is a proven impact player and could really help the leafs in their transition to a better defensive team. A deal like that may allow the Leafs to spend around 1 million to get another scoring winger. Keep in mind the likes of Selanne and Anson Carter did that and that turned into great bang for their buck for the teams that signed them.

There are limited choices for the Leafs but the team can make something work here.

  16. LeafsLeafsLeafs says:

Domi’s cash counts on the cap over a 2 year term roughly 600k per.

  17. Farva says:

Nobody is saying that most players want to sign in TO. Both Lindros and Peca have publicly stated that they would like to play here. Peca even said that in this free agent period that location is more important to him than money! This isnt blind speculation from Leaf fans; it is simply what these two players have said themselves. Also no one has taken anything away from other Nhl cities. Blake went to LA because he felt a loyalty to them, same with JR and phoenix, not to mention all the hoopla surrounding Shanahan signing with the Bruins because he spends his offseason in Boston. Please do not put words in anyones mouth.

  18. LeafsLeafsLeafs says:

Kronwall is not on a one way contract but I think suglobov is and i think the leafs will deal tellqvist at some point.

  19. wingerxxx says:

IF they sign Peca, why on earth would they want Lindros? That makes no sense at all. At least Peca has a prayer of playing through the entire season. Lindros is a luxury, nothing more. Peca proved with his playoff run that he can still be a valuable player for any team out there.

  20. TheWho says:

Everyone? Tucker is a piece of shit in this league though I actually like Peca.

  21. CrazyCanuck says:

How am I not surprised that he would possibly sign with the leafs…doesn’t everyone want to sign and live happy in Toronto…give me a break…he’s not going to be a leaf…he’s either going to sign with Edmonton or the Islanders…

  22. leaf_20 says:

if peca gets signed then the leafs arent gunna get lindros and peca already said he is whilling to take a paycut not to mension he was one of the better players for edmonton in the playoffs i would much rather him then lindros and roberts anmyday

  23. leaf_20 says:

it was on sports net he said he wanted to come to toronto before n e where else

  24. ObjectiveImpartiaL says:

the quote was “It means if the Leafs offer five million, and say the Bruins offer five million, the player will take the Leafs offer” It was not that Peca would take the offer, but that a player would. And he was not invering the player was Peca either since this 5 million is not even what Peca is asking. As most people realize this is not the first time this has been implied dealing with SOME Leafs fans saying players will pick Toronto. This being said Peca did say that but remember Pronger said he was talking about “next session” in Edmonton, as did Spacek. Jeremy Roenick was coming to Canada. Recchi was pretty much definatly comeing back to Pittsburgh when Caralina traded for him and now who knows. Just cause a player makes a mention of something doesn’t mean that much sometimes. There are probley tons of citys Peca would want to play in.

  25. PaulK123 says:

Recently I was right with the Ed Belfour thing because I reported it abourt a week before he

I found it on sportsnet.ca, so I am only the messenger.

  28. mccraig416 says:

jesus dude. ObjectiveImpartiaL, Peca was on the FAn 590 yesterday and say he would take a paycut to play in Toronto. He also said that Toronto is on the top of his list, and that for him, this free agency is about his family’s considerations, and not money. Read the whole thing in the Toronto star with peca’s exact quotes

  29. Raccer says:

I agree with both of you. You are wright mccraig416, Pace say that but Farva say with egual salary the player will play in Toronto. What Pace say is not what all the players think.

  30. goleafsgo1991 says:

Ok this means we have a third-line grinder as our number two source of offensive output, we probably won’t re-sign our only decent penalty killer (Wilm) and Wellwood and Antropov will stay shifted on their unnatural wings, and Stajan will still be too far down on the depth chart to have a break-out season

  31. goleafsgo1991 says:

Seriously…go after Carter and Samsonov…trade one of your back-up goalies and Antropov….

  32. DJTOKid says:

Your close, but your numbers are off just a tad, from what they spent and after they resign Wellwood and Stajan they should have 6.63mil. That is taking in account that they trade Tellqvists contract. They will have to sign and play at least one or two young defensemen which should cost $.75m-$1.5m. Then they should Sign Peca to a 3yr 6.75mil contract paying him 2.25 a year. After that, with $3.36m-$2.88m they could go three ways…

A)Sign Lindros For $750,000 and play him on Sundins wing for the Year. Stop spending and leave the cap space for the trade deadline.

B)Trade for Roberts, this would HAVE to involve some salary going the other way, Unless they only sign one young Dman then they could get Roberts straight up and have 1mil left under the cap.

C)Sign one of two free agent wingers V.Kozlov or D.Mcammond. Kozlov could probly come over for $1m-$1.5m a year and Mcammond would probly be near the league minimum leaving lots of cap room for the leafs to use come trade deadline.

I like the latter of the ideas….

    Kozlov———-Sundin———Oneil

    Steen———–Peca———–Tucker

    Antropov——-Stajan———Ponikorovsky

    Kilger———–Wellwood—– Suglobov/Pohl

    McCabe——–Kubina

    Kaberle——–Colaiacovo

    Gill————-Kronvall

    Raycroft

    Aubin

I’m a flames fan, but the leafs are my team in the east.

Toronto is a great place to live, and Peca is from Mimico.

So why woudn’t he want to play there again?

You probably live in New Jersey, the world’s leader in crack!

Lol…I love how Leaf-haters take personal offense to legitimate trade rumours reported in the legitimate press. He’s from Mississauga. I’m sure he’d love to play close to home, and whether he does end up here or not is another matter altogether. So Mike Peca might wanna play in Toronto…and what if he does? There’s no need to get upset about it.

  40. wilso101 says:

    100% PECA

  41. ObjectiveImpartiaL says:

Didn’t say that it wasn’t a great place to live. As is Boston. All I was refering to was the post IMO was implying that most players would prefer Toronto to anywhere else. There are many other places that would intrest Peca for one reson or another. Has it occered to some leafs fans that Peca might also be trying to use the media and fans to get a deal done. If the fans screamed for Peca when they heared that comment then its alot harder for John F not to sign him since Toronto is about putting a team on the ice that fans want than putting one on that wins games. Well maybe a mixture of both.

  42. Farva says:

First off Tucker is not a piece of shit. Any team would love to have a guy of his character and tenacity. Second, these two on the same line could cause some seroius damage. Both are heart and soul “pests” that cause turnovers, draw penalties, and contribute offensively. But if you are too biased to admit that then…
