Penguins find solution to need for depth at Center.

It looks as if the Penguins have found their solution to the center position. And it’s the same solution they found back in 1984.

It appears as if Mario will center a line with sniper Ziggy Palffy on his right, and power-forward Ryan Malone on his left. This line clicked instantly in their 7-2 win over Columbus, and were on the ice for all but one of those 7 goals.

It also looks like the “other line” (as coach Olczyk will not declare one the “1st” line over the other) will be Crosby flanked by Leclair and Recchi. That line worked well in training camp and seems to be a lock to start the season as the other top line.

So long as Lemieux’s back holds up, there is no better player than him to centre that line. He will not be a Perrault who wins almost every face off, but enough to get the advantage. I sometimes think that he loses some face offs just to keep the opposing centre guessing. But he almost always wins the face off when he needs to. Also, Malone can do the duty at time when Lemieux is not 100%.

Mario is still the best player in the game, and if he can play 60 games he will easily top 100 points.

100 points for Super Mario might be a stretch, but I sure am excited to watch this line, this year. I’m intrigued to see how Malone will respond on this line.

    I thought the concern was for a 3rd and/or 4th line center anyways……..

i’m sorry… but Lemieux is the top-line center… if you’re telling me the pens are throwing out Crosby’s line over Lemieux and Palffy when they NEED a goal late in the game you’re not going to be able to say that with a straight face.

I’m not going to say that. I’d put 66 out there over anyone. It’s just Edzo that said that.

Lasse Pirjeta and Shane Endicott, when he returns from his injury, should fill the 3rd & 4th line center roles.
