Kudos to Craig Patrick for making this happen without giving up too much. I heard it was Alexei Morozov and the #3 overall – not a bad deal at all.

Rick Dudley has to be pissed. He was trying like mad to fleece some teams (Justin Williams, Jeff Woywitka, and two first-rounders from the Flyers as an example), but only came up with a half-decent winger while moving down two slots. Dudley will probably take Nathan Horton, but who knows.

The Pens need this. Good for them.

Naaa, the media said that he was looking to nab Williams or Gagne, but i doubt there was much discussion between the Flyers and Panthers. Clarke has two picks….good enough.

  3. big_booty says:

The “discussion” was probably Dudley listing his demands, and Clarke doubling over in laughter. No way was Trader Bob going to be bent over the barrel like that.

Clarke should keep his picks and get Jessiman, Brown, Getzlaf, or the like. I would prefer Jessiman.

  4. Obcd says:

It’s Mikael Samuelsson not Aleksey Morozov

  5. mikster says:

Naaa, i’d take Brown over Jessiman. Jessiman is too big of a wild card to pick 11th. Getzlaf….you can feel safe with him but nothing too flashy about his game. Just, very simple….but very good at both ends of the ice and he does score. But, meh….he is nothing flashy.

We all know whats going to happen here, once the player the Pens draft becomes a super star then their just going to trade him away like they do everyone else.

I’m suprised that the Panthers traded it away for so little because some of the other offers that I heard of were alot better, thats if they were true.

I had small hopes Dallas would trade Matvitchuck and Arnott for the first overall pick; but, alas! We need to unload some salary for Hatcher somehow. Maybe Doug Armstrong has something in mind.

  8. mikster says:

    Arnott will go.

  9. Obcd says:

you changed it or my browser was going crazy?

  10. DaMick says:

FINALLY Patrick does a good deal….

    about time.

  11. aaron says:

Its not his fault he had to unload all that payroll. You think he thought he won any of those trades?

And its not really that good a deal, b/c Fleury would have dropped to 3 anyway, and I’m betting he’s going to flop either way.

  12. bruinfan37 says:

dumb trade. Fleury would have been number 3 anyways. This trade was not necessary

  13. Malurous says:

Why would Fleury drop to 3rd? I don’t see anything but Staal and Fleury being the top 2. If this helps the Pens avoid Nikolai “potential bust, certain a$$hole” Zherdev, it’s a good deal. I wouldn’t want to be the team that drafts him.

  14. big_booty says:

Your boy Slats took Jessiman over Brown, is it still a “wild card,” or is it a stroke of genius?

I think we already know the answer….

  15. MantaRay says:

Craig Patrick is no longer an elite NHL GM. This trade, the Jagr deal, the Naslund deal, etc, make Patrick look like a moron.

The Pens had the #3 pick overall–Florida has Luongo, and Carolina has Weekes. Both the Canes and Cats need help upfront and were not going to draft a goalie. Why do you trade a good player like Samuelson and another pick in a deep draft, to draft the player you were going to get ANYWAY???

This was another reason Craig Patrick should just retire.

  16. OldNord says:

They were assured to get it with the first. Dudley could have traded his first to another team who might have Fleury as target.

  17. BlueJacketshockey says:

    We drafted him after all.

  18. BlueJacketshockey says:

Not set in stone that Dudley keeps the no 1 pick. What happens if some one else gets the pick and takes him?

But I allways felt that those rumors that been running around were too much for the no1 pick.

Pittsburgh did not give up a Ton for it at least.

  19. WildWing89 says:

This Actually Is A Good Deal Both Ways. Dudley Would’ve Picked Horton Anways, But Got More Out Of This Deal. Patrick Needed To Guarantee Fleury, As Dudley Might’ve Traded It Elsewhere For Less Or Carolina Could’ve Picked Fleury As Weekes Won’t Be Good Enough In The Long Run. All They Gave Up Was Samuelson So It Wasn’t That Dumb Of Trade For Him. Dudley Benefited More, That’s All.

  20. MantaRay says:

Your right Dudley was going to pick Horton anyway.

The fact that Pittsburghs offer was the best Dudley could get for a first round pick just says there was no market for it.

Carolina was NOT going to draft another goalie, they already have two potential starters and what they consider a franchise goalie in the minors.

Dudley got what he wanted and more, the Pens lost a good, young player and a second round pick for nothing.
