Penguins pursuing Yanic Perreault

Dave Molinari of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette has said that the Pens are actively pursuing center Yanic Perreault for his faceoff and defensive abilities as a third-line center.

Also, the Penguins were interested in the services of Danny Markov and Jaroslav Spacek, but settled for D-man Mark Eaton as “the price was right”.

A return to Pittsburgh for Mark Recchi seems to be “a long shot”.

GM Ray Shero may be finished with free agency, but he has “left open the possibililty of making significant trades when other teams are forced to shed payroll or find themselves overloaded at a particular position.” Shero believes that even if he doesn’t sign free agents, other clubs doing so (such as the NJ Devils) will create trade possibilities.

Lastly, if the price is right, the Penguins would like to acquire Samsonov to play with Crosby or Malkin.

Bad example to use the Devils as a trade partner. Lou would never trade a player to a team within his division unless it was a can’t miss deal.

they’ll grab Greg Johnson instead of Perreault, mark my words

Pereault has defensive abilities??? Are you serious?

He was robbed of the selke this year

Dont need him that much, We have Malone, unless we move Malone to wing or trade him.

“Also, the Penguins were interested in the services of Danny Markov and Jaroslav Spacek, but settled for D-man Mark Eaton as “the price was right”.”

Would be nice to sign one more defense. Danny Markov would be the best fit because he worked for Shero and paired up with Eaton.

Thank God is all i have to say.

I have a feeling something big is going to happen with a semi blockbuster trade.

“Lastly, if the price is right, the Penguins would like to acquire Samsonov to play with Crosby or Malkin.”

I can see this happening (if the price is right) because the whole plan for the pens this offseason was to sign two D-men and one top 6 winger to play with Crosby.

the lines should look something like this. (now i’m being extremely optomistic) (and just read 2 seconds ago the pens signed Jarkko Ruutu)

    Samsonov – Crosby – Armstrong

    Quellet/staal – Malkin – ?

    LeClair – Malone – Ruutu

    Roy – Talbot – ?

    Gonchar – Whitney

    Markov – Eaton

    Orpik – Welch

    (Eric Cairns, Erik Christensen)

    Fleury

    T-bo

Sounds good. I really hope the Pens aren’t done yet. Mark Eaton was a great pickup and I believe Shero is done with defencemen. As for forwards, i would say that they are going to go after 2. Shero has come out and said that he intended on grabbing 3 players. A solid defencemen(Eaton), a scoring winger, and a reliable face-off man. I think Perrault would be a good choice for a 3rd-line centre considering he’s dominated the face-off circle for years. As for a winger, sure Samsonov would be okay but I’d rather they pull of a trade for a little more talented/younger guy. My dream trade would be to grab Bergeron (no chance in hell) to play alongside Crosby.

i just cant see the pens trading malone cause the guy telling them who they should trade for or whether it is any good is their Head Scout… GREG MALONE aka Ryans father

  13. merr29 says:

Malone was suppost to go to Ottawa at the trade deadline but Ottawa’s offer wasnt good enough

  14. CrosbyMalkin66 says:

Ive heard Malone was suppose to go to about 12 diffrent teams im done with hearin about Ryan Malone trades

  15. bleed_penguins says:

Shero isn’t dumb. I can’t see him trading Malone. He is young, very talented, and will be a cornerstone of this team for years to come.

Where does Dave Molinari say this? I can’t find it in the Post. Does this fanook (from hockeytraderumors, no gregor) have Dave’s home phone number or something?

Plus, although I don’t think Dave Molinari is as nearly dynamic as Dejan K., I would never accuse him of being stupid but, after reading that HTR post which accuses Yanic Perrault of having defensive abilities, one may wonder.

  17. BruMagnus says:

The consensus in Pitty is that Malone will be shifted back to his proper position of left wing, whether on Crosby or Malkin’s line depends on the future. In that case, neither Talbot (who may play wing), Christensen or Staal is an experienced third-line center. This is why one is required.

As for the lines. I have them as follows as of right now.

    Forwards:

    Malone – Crosby – Armstrong

    LeClair – Malkin – Ouellet

    Ruutu – ? – Talbot

    Murley – Christensen/Staal – Andre Roy

If, however, we sign a marquee winger, then:

    Samsonov – Crosby – Armstrong

    Malone – Malkin – Ouellet

    LeClair – ? – Talbot

    Ruutu – Christensen/Staal – Andre Roy

Staal may play on a wing over Talbot however, if he makes the NHL next year, and Talbot may center the 4th line.

    Defense:

    Gonchar – Whitney

    Eaton – Orpik

    Melichar – Welch

Scuderi – Cairns (ugh for both of these guys)

    Goalies:

    Fleury

    Crap-O

    Sabourin

Once again, where does Molinari say this? I can’t find anything in print from his newspaper (The Post-Gazette found at http://www.post-gazette.com). IN fact, the last time Perrault was mentioned by Molinari in the Post was Feb. 2005.

Do you have his home phone number? Do you go to church with him?

so being a badass in the faceoff circle doesnt count as ‘defensive ability’??? was under the impression that if the other team doesnt have possession of the puck, its alot harder to score, even vs the pens D. if you win that many draws, your keeping the puck away from the other team, hence the ‘defensive abilities’. i dont care if hes a penguin or not, what i just stated is fact. i love the people that jump all over others cuz they think they know more, THINK they know more, doesnt necessarily mean they do…

as for them getting samsonov, dont count on it. theres a much better chance of them bringing back morozov then there is of them signing a player like sergei ‘ceramic’ samsonov. this offseason is weak in terms of offense, shoulda blown their load on Dmen.

  25. jxo136 says:

by your logic, Mario Lemieux, who is widely considered as a “cherry picker,” or someone who did not play defense very often, was also a great defensive player because he kept the puck away from teh other team while he was on offense.

I believe the arguement against Perrault is in his own zone his slower-paced skating and lack of size lead to the perception he’s a defensive liability.

    TSN’s scouting report echo this:

“Is small in stature and his skating is a major weakness. Defensively, he can be overmatched in one-on-one battles and isn’t a physical player at all.” – http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=1085&hubname=nhl

  26. kamullia says:

He might have to (packaged with something else), to get someone who puts the puck in the goal regularly to play with Sydney.

  27. kamullia says:

I agree that having the puck makes up for having to defend, and clearly that is the intent of having a good faceoff man. But winning the faceoff does not happen 100% of the time and let’s be honest, Perreault is outright awful on defense.

Besides, the whole defense thing is a typo and Molinari said in an article today (Jul 5) that it is a lukewarm interest from Shero. The Molinari article sounded more like the agent trying to sell Perreault off to an unwilling Shero than anything.

I know Perreault is the best on faceoffs, but even having someone not as good would be an improvement for the Pens who were terrible on faceoffs. I would even go for Jan Hrdina or Greg Johnson, who are younger and probably in the same price range, even if not as good on faceoffs.

  28. kamullia says:

I would like that choice better. Even Hrdina over Perreault because of his age.

Still gotta give it to the old guy though, every year he is in the tops on faceoffs.

  29. PensFansRejoice says:

this is the same tsn that stated jason williams career potential is a 4th liner. dont know about u but i would take 60 pts from a 4th liner any day of the week…

  30. PensFansRejoice says:

i honestly dont want perreault, was just stating that everyone says hes a badass faceoff guy who cant play d, winning faceoffs should be included in the whole ‘D’ category. crosby and malkin will be pretty good on the draws if only because they push themselves to be.
