Petr Nedved claimed on re-entry waivers… by the Oilers!!!

According to, Petry Nedved has been claimed by the Edmonton Oilers. While there was wide spread speculation that Ottawa would be claiming the center, since Edmonton is lower in the standings, they get priority.

Umm…well, I thought Edmonton needed help on the blueline rather then upfront. They haven’t been scoring, but they have the talent. Maybe Nedved will reclaim his form he had last time he was in Edmonton.
If he does, great pickup. If not, it’s about 600k dollar hit against the cap

im usually very supporitve of all moves that the Oilers make, but this is either very good, or very bad for us.  He was an elite player when he was with us but as soon as the new NHL arrived his game dropped off.

  2. JannettyTheRocker says:

All I can say is……WOW. This was so unexpected, I just can't believe it.

A couple of seasons ago (before the lockout), we acquired Petr Nedved, and I was ecstatic. His style of play fits in perfectly with my Oilers, and he proved that on the ice. After all of the years of losing our stars to finances, we finally acquired a 'big name' star (which I considered him at the time).

But come the end of the season, Mr Nedved decided to fly south for the riches of a new contact, with a big market NHL team, leaving a bad taste in Oiler's fans mouthes. I for one was so mad at Nedved for leaving, but soon forgot about him as we now have a new face to hate (Yup, that gapped tooth MF'er, Chris Pronger).

Well, I am shocked at this new news that I've just read, I am a little bit excited to see Petr Nedved back in the Copper & Blue. He would fit nicely on a line with Petr Sykora and Ales Hemsky, in my opinion.

But a message to you Mr. Nedved : IF YOU LEAVE THE OILERS AGAIN DUE TO 'FINANCIAL REASONS, or, BECAUSE YOU GET A LOCAL TV REPORTER PREGNANT, AND BLAME YOUR LEAVE ON YOUR WIFE NOT LIKING THE CITY OF EDMONTION, you'd better watch your back, because us Edmonton Oiler fans don't take these issues very well, and your hockey career would likely end soon after you left,

But, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt……….Welcome back to Edmonton, and let's hope your stay is a beneficial one for both you, the team, and the fans.

I believe this pick up = trade soon
Possibly Horcoff, but you never know.
the oilers do NO need another forward, so the only logical thing i can think of is that a trade is in the works, or done in theory, such as a Center or winger for a Dman.
This pick up would asure we don't loose any punch up front.
  4. Les-Habitants says:

Just a quick correction on my original post: the Oilers are only going to be responsible for just over 600k, as the Flyers have already absorbed half of the season.

So, for 600k this is not a bad pickup at all.

  5. Jrugges2 says:

    Yeah……. Um.

I don't think this is that great of a pick up. Like someone said I thought the Oil needed an extra deffender? Oh well. Doubt its for trade bait since you know he was on waivers and all. Still wondering about the deffense?

  6. BurnabyJoe says:

I highly doubt the addition of Nedved (who is 34) will result in the trade of a player like Horcoff (who is 27). I think Nedved is there to semi-replace Moreau who was a big leader on that team. The Oilers are pretty young up front and could use a seasoned forward.

That said I still think Edmonton should aquire a solid dman, but they should trade Robbie Schremp, maybe be the likes of Brad Stuart.

  7. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

Looks like Lowe is looking for some secondary scoring. Its only a 600K gamble, so he took it.

  8. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

Get over it. If he leaves you're team he won't care what you think because you're just opposing fans. Pronger doesn't care what you think, he's trying to win over Anaheim fans, and doing a good job. If the Oilers are to make another run for the cup it has to be this year, because they'll never be able to resign the team. Oil will trade for a big name D-man at bthe deadline.

  9. 92-93 says:

a hockey player leaving a team to make more money with another team?!?!

a hockey player leaving a team for 'financial reason'?!?!

oh my!!! i cannot believe that this has happened to your poor Oilers. i have never heard of anything like this before but then it keeps happening to Edmonton. what terrible luck they must have.

(in other words, get over it … hockey fans claim to love a sport that they consider to be tough and yet posts such as yours complaining about PLAYER MOVEMENT [my stars, not player movement!] is pathetic and makes us sound like a bunch of whiners).

  10. Archion113 says:

Ok first off, Nedved is terrible.  So don't be happy that you have this bum on your team.

I'm a huge flyers fan, this guy can't even skate with Hatcher.  He's not what he use to be.

Also its 1.2ish million against your cap, not 600k.

  11. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

half of his 2.3 mil contract is apid for, and the flyers have to pay half of the remaining amount, less than 600K

  12. iginla012 says:

Usually I agree with you, but come on, this fool(Pronger) cheated on his wife and them blamed her for leaving Edmonton. That's low.

  13. Timo says:

    no, it's 600k

We passed the half way point of the season, so the Flyers have to take the first part of his contract.
we'll definetly have to see how things pan out.
I feel bad for you flyers fans, you have a great team on paper but it's not converting to wins.  good luck for the rest of the season…
  14. Yann says:

This is why I dont like most Oilers fans, when a guy leaves he is like a traitor, seriously it is business, its part of hockey, like it or hate it, thats the way it is! Oilers fans caused trouble in edmonton during the playoffs, and I really thought that was stupid… then in another way I loved how they sang BOTH national anthems out loud, the whole crowd did it during the playoffs… No offense but what you said was stupid…

  15. JannettyTheRocker says:

Let me ask you this 92-93,

Let's say that the Leafs had traded for Pronger, signed him to a 5 year contract extension (largest contact in team history), and let's say the Leafs have had to sell off all of their stars, and missed the playoffs regularily over the last decade. Then, the first season he's in the Leaf's nation, he helps the team get to game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals, but the barely lose. Now, the fans in the Leaf's Nation are finally seeing some great hockey, and expectations are super high….

And then a week after the heart-breaking game 7 loss, Pronger requests a trade out of Toronto, but won't explain why he wants out. He doesn't even defend his wife when terrible rumors are said about her not liking Toronto, or even defend himself with rumors that he's had an affair, and fathered a child in that affair. He won't give any reason, other than they are 'personal reasons'.

Are you telling me that if you were in this situation, you wouldn't be the least miffed as a fan??? Especially a fan of a team that's suffered so much over the last decade? If you can honestly say that, then you'd be lying, and have obviously never experienced anything like this.

But whatever, who needs Pronger. We're bringing home the Stanley Cup this year, without him.

  16. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

its his personal life, don't stick you're nose where it don't belong.

  17. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

Key word: PERSONAL!!! he doesn't need an excuse, he doesn't need the whole world to know every detail of his life. Leaf fans lost our star goaltender (Joseph) because he thought he could never win the cup as a leaf. Buddy, I'd take personal reasons over that any day. GET OVER IT.

  18. Archion113 says:

Didn't know they had to take on half then half again.

  19. Archion113 says:

Thanks man, the real flyer fans haven't given up yet.

We went on a 23 game point streak last year at this time.  23 games this year would put us back into the mix of things.  Rangers are playing like ass right now, and Pittsburgh if they continue to play the way they are won't make the playoffs.  Should be a good battle between Pitts and Flyers if the flyers can turn it around.

  20. 92-93 says:

that is all RUMOR … in other words, learn the difference between the National Enquirer and the New York Times.

  21. 92-93 says:

quit being such a cry baby. get over it!!

'personal reasons' should be enough to put a stop to your whining. its NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. hockey is not the be all and end all of life … if he does this to every team he goes to then sure, its time to raise some eyebrows. but it happens once. big deal.

    move on.

i would be very disappointed at first … but over time i'd get over it. and i would never be 'miffed' because personal matters should ALWAYS trump business or hockey matters.

    hockey is a game.

and perhaps that is why its easy to be a fan of any team – let alone a team that has lost the disappointing games the leafs have lost.

but you are on to something when you say 'whatever, who needs Pronger.' that is EXACTLY the attitude you need to take. move on. the oilers have a lot of other young players to look forward to.

heck, maybe even Tucker and Bell (or even, god forbid, Coliacovo) would look good in an Oiler uniform in exchange for Torres and a 1st rounder.

  22. wingerxxx says:

Have you seen him play this year?  You can have him.

I'd pray that he can re-capture even a glimmer of his form, when he was with Edmonton before.

  23. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

Its to stop teams from doing what Jersey did to Mogilney last year. Had Jersey called him up, he would have been a cheap purchase for another team.

  24. cecilturtle says:

ESPN Radio 1050 NY reported the Rangers put in a claim for Nedved off waivers, but Edmonton record was lower in the standings.  For about 600k how could one go wrong taking a chance on Nedved I guess?  Especially with the Rangers, Nedved would have had instant chemistry with their top two lines and Powerplay…  But I don't see this move helping the Oilers at all.  There is no chemistry with Nedved and the players on Edmonton and one should expect the same results with Nedved in Edmonton as in Philly.  Before long (next week) Nedved will find his way to the 3rd & 4th lines and all the fans will be complaining about Nedved not being a checking type player.  I have a feeling the Rangers might still get a chance to claim Nedved off the Waiver wire before seasons end…  Just this time it will be Edmonton giving up on him.
