Phaneuf, Leafs to resume contract talks

The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to pick up talks with captain Dion Phaneuf on a new contract this week, if negotiations haven’t resumed already.

Phaneuf, currently suspended for two games for the first time in his career, is in the final-year of his current deal and can become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
The 28-year-old’s six-year, $39 million contract expires June 30, 2014.

Phaneuf had been making $6.5 million, per season, on his deal and it was reported in late-October that he is looking for around $7 million, annual, on a new long-term contract.

Contract negotiations have been mild, to date, but are expected to pick up this week between the Leafs and Phaneuf’s representatives at Newport Sports Management.

So with the Leafs not exactly pushing for the Stanley Cup the next year or two (?), do you resign Phaneuf or do you let him walk and continue adding younger blueliners?

Or phrased another way, at what point do you say, it’s not worth resigning him?

So who’s excited for 24/7 this Sunday?

Hate to be a pessimist, but tomorrow is almost a guaranteed loss. I’d try these D lines:

Keep those slow, useless plugs off the ice. At least Liles can move the puck. How Rielly has been sitting for those gong shows is beyond me.

Easy. Randy Carlyle is an idiot.

Why do the Leafs aways suck when there’s a bad draft?

Seriously, they couldn’t have sucked last year and be good this year?

It’s always been like that. We finished last overall in 1985 and drafted Wendel Clark 1st overall. Wendel was great, but if it was only ONE year earlier, we would have had Mario Lemieux!

They are not exactly a lottery team yet. I always had a hard time hating Carlyle because he seemed to single handedly fix the PK, but it sucks again, so I am open minded to coach hate once again.

Yeah and in fact, I still don’t rule out the playoffs. The Leafs are 2 good defencemen away from making the playoffs. The question is, where we gonna get those 2 defencemen?

Rusty Klesla was put on waivers earlier in the year, is in the final year of his contract, cap hit $2.9 million.

Now this is a guy I would want, but I imagine they want to make the cap space work. I wonder if we could move them Mark Fraser ($1.4 million hit) for Klesla then we wouldn’t be taking too much on and the Coyotes would still be shedding some salary.

I also think Klesla has been playing decently well but he’s kind of the odd man out with the emergence of Schlemko playing decently well, obviously Yandle, OEL, and Derrick Morris are going to get the big minutes, and they’ve got other young talent around. This would be a good situation to take advantage for Nonis.

I like those pairs, but I would flip all of them. Phaneuf, Gardiner, and Franson should be playing the right side.

    For now i’d try to work a deal with Florida and the Islanders. Something along the lines of;

    JM Liles
    Fraser, Hickey
    Tom Gilbert, Ryan Whitney
