Pierre McGuire confirms a Leaf will put on waivers.

Pierre McGuire, TSN’s “hockey insider” and analyst, reported on the Mitch Melnyk Show on Team 990 in Montreal that a “high-profile” Leaf player will be put on waivers very soon.

He apparently got a call late last night, around 1 or 2am, from a reliable Leaf source.McGuire’s source told him that he did not know the exact name of the player in question, but both assumed that the player will be Shayne Corson.

McGuire went on to say that should this be Corson and that he is not picked up, that he will be sent to the minors. And, if Corson does not report to their farm club he will likely be suspended without pay.

This seems like a nasty thing to be doing to Shayne although I can see where they are going to need some room on their roster. With the acquisition of Nolan and Gilmour and the return of a healthy Roberts perhaps the Leafs feel there is no more room for him.

If this is even true, I think that Edmonton would claim him in a second. Sort of like a rental for the playoffs. The fans would like it, considering the recent trades. It shows that Lowe is thinking about this year and not just the future.

P.S. It’s sort of funny how you guys still find ways to get another Maple Leaf story out. I’m willing to bet this isn’t even true, even though the deadline has arrived. If it is, Edmonton’s the place for Corson. He’d be a good 3rd liner.

Did you know that Edmonton is the only team on this site that doesn’t have a story about them.

  2. bruinexpert says:

I’m not sure either…anyone??? I wouldn’t do it to corson..he’s been producing since coming back from being a healthy scratch..you don’t dump a guy who’s hot…especially a proven playoff performer

  3. bruinexpert says:

well nobody is buying your book so we don’t care

  4. bruinexpert says:

that’s because edmonton only has 3 fans…there’s no interest

  5. STPMCPHEE says:

yeah, that’s also why they sell out almost every home game.

  6. Envi0us says:

If Corson is put on waivers it will be a BIG mistake. Corson is a great asset in the playoffs and just image if the Leafs had to play against him. I don’t think that it would be a wise move.

We all know Corsons ability to be an effective player come the post-season so why would Quinn and company want to dump him?

I would hope that they dump Reichel, Hoglund, Lumme or Fitzgerald before they were to dump Corson.

But then again that is just my opinion.

  7. GreatWhiteNorth says:

They signed Fitzgerald for the playoffs. Berg is young and has potential. Hoglund has been faitly useful.

If it’s anyone it will be Recihel or Lumme.

Unless Quinn has gone a bit crazy. No reason to give up Hoglund or Berg when there’s Reichel and Lumme. Althoguh even Reichel has had his uses.

  8. GreatWhiteNorth says:

lol. Thanks, that made me laugh a lot this afternoon 🙂

  9. bruinexpert says:

hahaha i agree..its just fun to make fun corson…i like the guy though..especially the way he’s been playing recently

  10. bruinexpert says:

yeah in a 30 person arena, all 3 fans and the team’s family

  11. leafbrat says:

It has to be Reichel or Hoglund.Quinn has been making all the right moves and to release Corson would be a stupid move!!The Flyers will pick him up in a minute!!

Quinn don’t be stupid and release a proven playoff player for the likes of Reichel(who does nothing each post season) or Hoglund (who wilts under checking).

  12. Lint07 says:

Alexei Yashin probably told him after last years series.

In his case, it was not ”How many points he gets” but more ”How many points Yashin did NOT get”

Corson was in Yashin’s face all series long, and he did an excellent job at it.

  13. STPMCPHEE says:

Yes, you’re right. I admit, it’s a 30 person arena. How silly of me to think that Skyreach Center was an NHL sized arena, especially considering an NHL team called the Oilers plays in that arena. Hmmm, I have so much to learn.

Man, grow up and post a comment that makes sense.

  14. Lint07 says:

    ahah 🙂

    Good one!

  15. sportside24 says:

why would tucker be on waivers???? or green??? maybe one of the other 3 but i doubt anyone will be a waivers..

  16. sportside24 says:

Corson will be playing against the other teams top line, strickly to shadow …

probally a line of nolan, antropov, and corson…

  17. MrMicawber says:

What about Trevor Lidd? I suggest this only because Mike Minard has been called up, and I haven’t heard that Kidd or Belfour are hurt…

  18. Kroeter says:

I’m still waiting for someone to tell me if a player picked up on waivers can still play in the play-offs.

  19. Sane04 says:

    Roberts Sundin Mogilny

    Nolan Antropov Renberg

    Corson Green Tucker

    Fitzgerald Gilmour Domi

    Kaberle Svehla

    McCabe Wesley

    Lumme Berg

    *Housely injured

I think it’s definatley going to be a centremen because they have too many. Reichel?

  20. jon95616 says:

I dont know the exact rule but my thought is that waiver picks up are playoff eligible.

  21. jon95616 says:

I dont think it will be Belak…but I agree that if you are a Detroit fan there might not be many fights to see next year if you like that sort of thing. (Avery gone, McCarty picks his spots now, Shanahan very rarely fights….am i forgetting anyone?)

  22. jon95616 says:

I dont think getting rid of a veteran backup goalie is the solution to the roster overload…would need to be a forward/d-man.

  23. jon95616 says:

I agree of all the players being mentioned Corson would be the quickest to be grabbed for the playoffs if he is put on waivers.

  24. TC_4 says:

Hoglund or Lumme is my guess. Hasn’t Corson got three goals since returning to the lineup? Two for sure. They can’t get rid of Reichel because they don’t have many centres, so that would leave Hoglund or Lumme.

  25. WeStSiDe says:

    So Reichel goes..

  26. orlandomac says:

Jesse you take that stuff so personal, all I was saying is that most Leaf fans see hatred towards Reichel, and instead of watching what he actually does they just get on him for past disgresitions.

Meanwhile some of there favs are playing like crap…

IE Tucker, Corson, McCabe and at times Domi, although he has had a more consistent year for a change, inpart due to Reichel.

As for who I think it is, I believe waivers do not exist at this time of year. I think the rosters are expanded, correct me if I’m wrong.

But just in my opinion, I would waive Lumme because although he has improved he is too old and inconsistent, personally I would have traded McCabe to some team that values him and got a young defender who is coachable.

    Why you might ask?

McCabe in his mind has to be a superstar, now that they have gotten rid of his signature move, he overplays everything just like Joseph and gets burned constantly. If he didn’t get such prime time with the top lines his plus minus would be ridiculous.

Rick Lee must like him cause he gets prime 5 on 5 time, more then Kaberle and Svehla get.

Wouldn’t you like to be on the back end of Sundin and Mogilny all the time? All you have to do is make a pass and you got a point. Conversely thats why those forwards plus minus aren’t as high as they should be. Quinn will say that they aren’t backchecking enough. But when McCabe is dashing at the oppositions net, it means 2 forwards have to rush back.

There you have it my opinion.

PS I too look at these (.)(.) and still manage to watch the game.

  27. orlandomac says:

    On that list Green goes………..

    You stand corrected.

  28. STPMCPHEE says:

Haha, buddy. It looks like Edmonton finally has a story on the site, and guess who wrote it?

    That’s right, yours truly.

  29. bruinexpert says:

well it had to be you…the other two fans in edmonton don’t have access to the internet

  30. bruinexpert says:

you started it by asking why nobody posts articles about the oilers….now that’s a comment that doesn’t make ANY sense…who the hell would waste their time…aside from multi-billionnaire comrie, there’s nothing good in edmonton now that anson is gone…at least you won’t have to worry about comrie ever leaving your team for monetary reasons…i’m sure he’ll inherit enough

  31. Slovakiaz says:

    you’re right … good prediction 🙂

  32. Slovakiaz says:

I’m happy to see a smile on your face … hehe

finally I think that nobody will be put on waivers ?!

  33. Leaf_Expert says:

I guess you pretty familiar with the word huh,….

  34. TC_4 says:

Then what happens if one of those guys get’s hurt??? You have to have 5 centres that can play. I would get rid of Reichel too, but they need him unfortunatly. That’s why he’s stayed there all year.

  35. STPMCPHEE says:

Actually, we’re up to 12 now! That’s how many posts are there as of now. I’m hoping for more. By the way, we had another sellout yesterday. Over 16,600 people. Atleast

  36. canucklehead says:

Yeah, The biggest one of all of them keeps on writing stupid comments to me!

  37. Whitney-Cheechoo-Fan says:

Corson is a great player and a nice guy, the fans love him (ok maybe not the ones in Toronto, but those guys suck anyway). I mean the OILERS fans! 😉 Getting Shayne back would be great! But he won’t be waived, not Shayne Corson.

Maybe Reichel, who might want to leave the NHL and return to Europe. Jackman and Belak are also possibilities. Forget about Tucker, Green and Hoglund, they are complete players and Tucker has knocked on Superstar’s door last season. Green is an important player and fan favorite (at least he was in Phoenix) and Hoglund is a talented 2nd/3rd line winger. Lumme and Berg… No. Lumme is not as good as he has been earlier in his career, but still has skills that make him more than a reserve defenceman. Berg is young and they will try getting more out of him.
