ya you're right, but its still a nice change to see Buffalo go out ahead of time and make this signing. Don't forget, before Briere's last season in Buffalo he and his agent approached the Sabres about a long term extension seeking $5 million per season. The sabres turned that down, and later in the season came back asking if he'd do that contract, and his stock had risen so much by that point.

Even if he had been allowed to hit RFA next summer, the Sabres wouldn't have lost him for nothing. They would have taken the draft picks the other team that signed him to an offer sheet would have to give up. And the only way they wouldn't have matched an offer for him would be if they got 4 1st rounders as compensation.

But its a smart extension now, Pommer would have gotten $6 million or more next year whether he was given an offer sheet or signed by the Sabres. This also shows some commitment on Pominville's part to the team and the teammates he's had since his AHL days. The Sabres now have their most important core players signed for at least the next 3 seasons (Vanek, Miller, Roy, Pominville, even Nathan Gerbe could be added to that list).
Good signing. Like you said pezzz, they didnt need to lose him for nothing like so many before him. Glad to see them open their wallets for once. (Open them willingly that is, Vanek doesn't count)
