Possibility of Modano to Montreal

Before everyone jumps all over me..listen to what I have to say…According to RDS a couple of days ago..Montreal may be looking at Modano to fill the first line center position we have available. He would be a great fit because we need a first line center.
I don’t think Koivu is a first line center (in my opinion). Modano is a leader, something we are missing. He also has a lot of respect and admiration for Carbo and Gainey from their days in Dallas. Some of you may not be aware of this but Modano is not happy in Dallas since he is now playing on the fourth line. I would package Halak, a prospect and a mid draft pick for Modano and Steve Ott… Steve Ott would give us the tough guy we’ve been seeking…Let me know what you think?

First, we should ask ourselves is Modano is an upgrade from Koivu or Plekanec? At this point in his career, I don’t think he is. Five years ago, this would have been fantastic for the Habs. But Modano has arrived at the end of the road and doesn’t have the same speed and is not dominating the way he used to. If he does come to Montreal, I could only see him playing on the wing (perhaps replacing Ryder) or third line center.

However, I give this rumour from RDS a thumbs down. With this said, if Gainey could pull a rabbit out of a hat and trade Garth Murray with an average prospect (Milroy) for Modano, than I’m all for it!!!

The other factor to consider is his salary… how much is Modano making anyway? If his salary is above 3 million, then it’s just not worth it. Gainey needs cap space to hopefully sign a star in February when the Habs are going to make their push for the playoffs.

    Really bad idea !!!
Let the leafs get him, it’s more their style to get old players as saviors..
Modano has two more years left at his contract at the end of the year and I think it’s worth 5 mils a year (it might be more!!!)… still interested ??

I don’t think you followed Bob’s moves these last years, he is trying to build a franchise, not destroy it to make the playoff once..

Even Modano for Garth Murray would be a bad trade, and to add to your bad call, I’ll say that both Koivu and Plekanec are gonna have more points than Modano in each of the next three years, and don’t say it’s because they’re playing on an offensive team, you’ll become even dumber..

your logic is strange, if modano is a fourth line center on a team that has a worse offense than montreal, how would he be a first line center for the habs?

he is not leavng dallas.  how many points is modano away from setting the American born NHL scoring record?  for what organization has he played HIS ENTIRE CAREER since being selected first overall in the draft?  This is modano's 18th season in the NHL.  He is the face of the Stars. He will retire this season or next.  If he spent 18 years with the Stars, he isn't going to spend his final season in Montreal and even if he wanted to, he would not be the first line center.

I object to your characterization of Koivu.  I agree he isn't a first line center.  But he is a winner, a gritty guy and a huge leader.

Trading Modano for prospects is so disrespectful to him as to be laughable.  Would Montreal have traded the Rocket for a bag of pucks?

If you want Ott, that's another story but I thought montreal added grit with Smokes, Kosto and Chipchura.  Why would they need Ott?

the only reason to trade for modano is that his future wife is as hot as souray's and i am not sure we replaced her in the offseason.

us picking up modano would be good but only for one year!and the stars wouldn't take halak as they have smith and turco!!but if we could give up something and not that much for his leadership and stanley expiernce and give us another veteran voice to help the kids then yes i'd get him!!i know gainey almost considered getting him last year when the stars disgarced and embrassed him by stipping him of the captaincy modano showed a lot of class and handled it like a true leader and professional and that is why if we could get him and not give up the farm to get him! i'd do it this is another veteran that the youngster could gain  alot from and learn the value of being the consume professional that knows what it takes to win and he'd also provide thatstability in the locker room!!good post i've enjoyed reading this one!!
