Possible Solutions For Leafs?

After yesterday’s aquistion of Mike Comrie by the Ottawa Senators, I once again fear them. Once Spezza and Fisher come back they will have Comrie as either a second or third line center! The guy can still score!

So, I have compiled a list of what the Leafs can do to become competitive in the Northeast Division. JFJ came on the Fan590 a few days ago and stated that the Leafs have about $500,000 dollars in cap space to work with, so here are my possible solutions, which are all speculation:

NOTE: IF THE LEAFS MAKE ONE OF THESE MOVES, THEY WILL NOT MAKE THE OTHER ONE, SO THESE ARE BOTH SEPERATE SCENARIOS

SOLUTION 1

To Toronto:
Ladislav Nagy ($3,000,000)
Mid-Round Draft Pick

To Phoenix:
Nik Antropov ($1,007,000)
Brendan Bell ($450,000)
Jeff O’Neill ($1,500,000)

This would finally give Sundin a good winger to play with. Nagy is only 25 years old and eve though we are losing Bell we are getting a winger who will be around in the future, also we have enough good young defenseman in the system to be able to lose on. I think that the Leafs should finish with Antropov, we have given him multople chances and he hasn’t shown much. I know Phoenix is re-building but I think O’Neill would be a great leader in that locker room. So overall i think it would be an even deal.

SOLUTION 2

To Toronto:
Shawn Horcoff ($3,600,000)
Joffrey Lupul ($1,500,000)
4th rd. draft pick

To Edmonton:
Pavel Kubina ($5,000,000)
Alex Steen ($770,000)
2nd rd. draft pick

This is a fairly even trade, Kubina is a very good defenseman but can only excel if in the #1 defensive line, not the 2nd. He needs minutes to excel. Edmonton is looking for a puck moving defenseman and Kubina is their answer. The Oilers have been shopping Horcoff actively and I think he would be a great fit in T.O, playing with Mats could have him play the way he did in last year’s playoffs.

After Mats leaves, maybe Horc would be able to replace him, but that is a big MAYBE. He would be a great 2nd line center and would fit in to Paul Maurice’s system. Alex Steen and Joffrey Lupul have both been underachieving this year, they are both still young and I think a change of scenery for both would do wonders for them. The reason I inclued the draft picks are because Edmonton is taking on Kubina’s hefty salary.

What’s your guys take, would this work, is it possible, does JFJ go on HTR.com, who knows?

both trades are BIG trades but both include players that i see the leafs trading and trading for (with the exception of Steen).

BUT the one thing i disagree with is this monkey-see-monkey-do, 'oh-no-look-at-ottawa-now' mentality that is being adopted here.

    who cares about ottawa!!!

yes i know they are in the same division and the standings are close, etc. BUT ottawa is in a different phase of their development (i.e. cup contender phase). AND, Mike Comrie does NOT scare me and he is an ottawa-type player. the leafs should be thinking longer term and should be simultaneously shooting for bigger (Nagy) and smaller (draft picks, prospects) fish.

    Solution Number 2 please.

We shoudn't trade Steen, hes in something called the sophomore slump. it happens all the time to players entering their second year. And he will eventually break out of it. He still has lots of potential, to become a 1st liner and a point per game player.

I like both trades. I wish they could dump Gill in the process.

  9. Gryphon says:

…..OK…..1 may work, maybe!? 2, NO cuz Kubina has a no trade clause, I think, and we wouldn't trade Steen!

O, and I doubt JFJ goes to HTR as cool as this website is :), he is a GM, so ya!

  10. 92-93 says:

kubina does not have a no-trade clause. McCabe and Kaberle do.

but with 5 pts, making 5 million a year for 4 years, he might as well have a no-trade clause.

  11. lukeleim says:

    5 pts tonight

    why not
    Gill for Lupul
    or
    Kubina for Nagy

gill is a big tool and if u dump him/kubina you'll save alot of money/cap space and get a good forward in the process

Can you make that work without giving up O'Neill? I don't even like giving up Tucker for that few months. Definitely not Kilger. Love that guy.

  23. koolcracker says:

I like the first one alot because it would probably give us a better chance to resign Nagy in the offseason if he clicks with Mats. I do not liek the second one however. I do like the players coming back our way, but I don't liek the 2nd pick or the Steen. Sten is my favourite palyer and to give up on him in his sophmore year I don't like.
