Possible Trade Deadline Moves

I am a huge Habs fan and right now the team is sitting in fourth place in the East 5 pts back of Ottawa for first overall. But let’s be realistic, this team is young and improving everyday and we should not put to much expectations on them too soon. I don’t see Gainey getting a rental player this deadline, this years draft is too deep and he doesn’t usually trade first round picks; but I do think this team is on the right path. I would like to see Gainey take a run at Boyle in Tampa because of his injuries he might not cost them a #1 pick and might be able to sign him to a 2 year deal for a good price. So I see this team going into the playoffs with basically the same team they have now for the young guns to gain experience and Gainey will make his moves during the draft and offseason. I see it unlikely that Huet will be back as he will want a longer term contract then the team is probably willing to give and Price will need a strong D in front of him next season if they are going to move on with him as #1. I like Bouillon but I think we should try to move him and his $1.875 mil contract to free up cap space. With O’Byrne and Gorges coming into their own and Valentenko probably being able to make the jump next season and also be able to get Boyle our 08/09 D could look like:
Markov – Komisarek
Hamrlik – O’Byrne
Boyle – Gorges
Valentenko (extra)
Thats a strong d core.

Our forward lines are almost set with a good 4th line of Kostopoulos – Chipchura – Begin; a third line of Latendrese – Lapierre – Streit (Streit still playing d on the powerplay); a great second line of A. Kostitsyn – Plekanec – Kovalev; and two good first line wingers in Higgins and S. Kostitsyn. That still leaves us with our usual problem of a #1 Center. I am not trying to knock Koivu because I am a big fan of his and what he has done for the team; but, he is not the #1 center we need and is paid too much to be anything less. This years UFA’s doesn’t seem to have any big names to take a run at so it will have to come through a trade. The usual names will be Lecacalier, Richards, Jokinen, Marleau, maybe Carter RFA?

Take it easy on me it is my first posting; I look forward to hearing feedback about your opinions on what players could be available for our #1 center postition through trade and free agency this offseason.

In Bob we trust!

Go Habs Go!

Brad Richards will be the finishing touch for this team. That will make us a legitimate contender. i like our defense and i am impressed with gorges play of late.

I think I prejudged Gorges way to early. He has quite abit more potential then I realize, and he wasn't a garbage defender afterall. As for Richards, well he would be a great asset, or Even Jokinen, but remember Forseberg might come here due to him marrying a MTL girl, and the Father in-law wanting them to stay in MTL and him playing for MTL. So we have a shot at the sweedish magician aswell. Should be an interesting month.

so hypotheticlaly forsberg signs with the habs, who does he play with?  does he play with koivu and higgins?  or maybe you toss him in with sergei and guillaume, that could really work, sergei is awesome, he showed us what he can do last night, and guillaume, well he can just hang out in front of the net and wait for the puck to get to him so he can bury it in the back of the net

Don't you think Dandenault and Ryder will get moved soon?  They have no place on the team anymore.  Besides they're not the young players on the team, nor the core of the team.  I'm sure you can get something out of them, at worse you can get some prospects or picks, which you can use another year, say next year when they really make a push.  These 2 guys have a lot of value, and so do Grabovsky, Locke and Halak, as prospects, and we all know that those 3 won't be part of the habs future.

  5. Plekanec says:

If by any sort of chance Forsberg signs with Montreal!

    Kostitsyn-Plekanec-Kovalev
    Higgins-Forsberg-Koivu
    Latends-Lapierre-Kostitsyn
    Streit-Smolinski-Begin/Kostopoulos/Chipchura

Then trade Dandenault, Halak and Ryder for Prospect(s) and/or draft picks.

I agree with you on everything you said, I think the smartest move would be to get rid of Ryder and Huet to free up some salary and make a really nice offer to Lecavalier, a big, strong, talented # 1 center, this is what we need. Huet is good but signing him will remove Price out of the picture and as we all know Price is the future of Montreal Canadians so he needs to see some action to be able to get used to the NHL. I would say go get a guy like Curtis Joseph or any veteran who wouldnt mind sitting on the bench and be there for his experience. They will be a dangerous team in the playoff this year if they keep it up.

    Go HABS Go !!!!

I think Huet gets signed for 2 more years.  Price is only 20 years old.  VERY few goalies successfully start their careers at this age AND maintain a level of play needed to lead a team to ultimate success.  First, I think all the media hype around CP has been a burden to him, with the Dryden and Roy comparisons.
I sure as heck don't want him to turn into another M-A Fleury!
Yeah, he did great winning the gold, best player in Junior, winning the AHL MVP.  But NONE of those is the NHL.
I say trade Halak, packaged with Ryder, Dandy and pick(s) for (insert your needs here – a centre, Dman, whatever)
If Price is ready next season, he gets the #1 job or splits the work with Huet and the following year hopefully Price is 100% ready and Huet is still a great goalie and tradeable for whatever our needs are at the time.

I really don't think the Habs need Boyle. They have enough solid defencemen right now, and some very good ones on the way. I wouldn't waste a resource on Boyle. I do agree a big centre would help, but I think the Habs would be better off getting a centre that can win faceoffs! Edmonton is hurting and maybe Mtl could make it worth their while to trade Stoll. If MTL could trade Grabovski, Chipchura, and Gorges for Stoll, Torres, and Pouliot. That would leave the team chemistry preety much intact and give Mtl some grit / skill ( Torres ) a similar player to Chipchura in Stoll, and a possible winger to replace Ryder in Pouliot. Then Mtl could package Halak, Ryder, Locke, and maybe a second or third round pick for Ollie Jokinen. I wouldn't move Koivu at this point. That would probably mess up the chemistry. Koivu could probabl move to right wing on a line with Higgins and Jokinen.

what is all this forsberg talk? he is going to philly it looks like. everyone remember John Leclair and how good he was for a number of years. Well take a good look at ryder, i thought he was great last year but didnt pass enough, you think someone told him to pass more???? he will be a great player somewere else 40+ goals . he is not happy in montreal why? we didnt sign him to long term and he is not the same player now.  I will take Brad richards over forsberg.
Richards has speed and will be a natural fit in montreal.

there is suching a thing called a salary cap!!and even if gainey did trade with l.a. there's no gaurantee that we would get stamkos!!there is  a draft lottery!!tradehiigins for tangauy!!tangauy has a n.t.c and he said if he waives it montreal will be one of the teams he won't waive it or!plekanec for brad richards!!i wouldn't make that trade!!!and the sedin s in vancouver have n.t.c's it would take more than hiigins to get either sedin twin!and you want gainey to make up for not draftind esposito!!make up for waht?drafting a guy that's going to be a bust or at the very least alexander daigle!!!we used to make draft day mistakes like this not anymore!!gainey and timmins!are to smart to fall fro that stuff!e.i look at the job they done with all the young talent we have!!and last year's picks (1st r.d')macdonagh and pacioretty were smart choices!!and will make us that much better!!your goffy trades that you are suggesting makes you sound like a dillusional leafs fan and not a habs fan!!so think before you speak!!!
