I think the 5 to 6 million dollar margin is legitimate, when you consider Toskala was given 4 million by the leafs and Mason was given close to the same by Nashville, and both goalies never played a full season in the net, it is legitimate to think that an all star goalie can command a lot of money even if it seems like more than he is worth.
Luongo, Kiprusoff, and Lundqvist were definitely negotiated after the lockout, not sure about the rest. But thats not the point. The point is that as good as Miller is, there's no way he winds up being the highest paid goalie in the league, be it with Buffalo or anyone else. He's good, but he hasn't accomplished anything. 4.5 million a year is fair, 5 tops.
Most of the contracts deal were finalized prior the new CBA. Brodeur is his own agent, he doesn't have to pay a pourcentage to a firm. Anyway, Miller plays for Buffalo...nothing against the Sabres, but they did lost a lot of key players lastly. He would worth 7M$ for this team.
If he really want to play there, maybe but if Jagr wants to test the market, he would get 6M$ minimum somewhere.
Ryan Miller?? 7 million a year?? If he's asking for that then he's off his f***ing meds. 7 million per year makes him the highest paid goaltender in the league. That's more than Brodeur, Luongo, Kiprusoff, Khabibulin, Theodore, Lundqvist, and Giguere, each of whom have had more success than Miller in one way or another (Vezina winners/finalists, Stanley Cups, Conn Smythes, Hart winners/finalists etc.) He's good, but if he asks for 7 million, cut your losses and move down the line. He's not worth that.
It's very possible the Sabres could be looking to move up in the draft to claim one of the prized defensemen or forwards. Their organization has drafted several defensemen in recent years, some have not panned out well, and others appear to be ready to play at the NHL level now. Young forward depth is less plentiful, but the Sabres have several forwards with 1 year deals that could be traded in order to save money to resign others. I'm looking at Afinogenov and Kotalik as the likely trade candidates to be packaged for a higher pick. They also have San Jose's 1st round selection to use in a big time deal.

With so many young players soon to be RFAs or getting their this offseason (for example Paille, Bernier this year, Stafford, Pominville next year) the Sabres will need to pony up to keep them. Add the fact that Ryan Miller is a year from being a UFA and could be looking for $7 million a year, the Sabres will be shuffling the deck before next season. A salary dump trade that happens to bring in a top 5 pick could be in Darcy Regier's plans.
I'd prefer a pumpkin for raycroft, but then again, potatoes are pretty tasty and a pumpkin might be asking for too much. I imagine it'd be a bit better positionally in net as well..but a potato...thats probably an even trade.

Totally agree with this... however... Caps dont plan on resigning Huet? And are you sure Jagr is the best fit for this system? or any system for that matter...?

I think Jagr is about 1 or 2 seasons away from retirement and you can tell hes definitely slowing down and becoming less effective. However since he probably knows this... The Kings could get him for semi-cheap... maybe in the 3.5-4.5m range. Who knows?

I don't think Bernier will be too young next year. He's going to be 20. Thats old enough. Actually, isn't there a 20 year old starter this year?? I think there might be. What was his name again?? Lice?? Dice?? Christ?? Hey, that might be it. Pr...Price?? That sounds close enough. I can't believe I couldn't remember his name. He must not be getting much recognition. I don't think he's doing too bad though. Does anyone on this site know how his team is doing??
