TFP reports that The Nashville Predators have traded G Tomas Vokoun to the Florida Panthers for draft picks. reports a 1st rounder and two second rounders.

  1. Jeff198 says:

This is a great trade for the Panthers, but they lose their two picks this year.

Does anybody know what Vokoun's copntract is ?

  2. Neely4Life says:

Should we just give Detroit the Presidents trophy now? Because thats is now the worst division in hockey, and Detroit is gonna run threw it like a Hurricane.  Florida is gonna be pushin for a playoff spot now too.  Good trade for Florida, Martin seems to be building a fairly good team there.

  3. senators101 says:

And the Fire-sale continues.  Who's next? Mason?

  4. mikster says:

I like this trade a lot. Not a HUGE fan of Vokoun but the Panthers have good young talent for a few years and missing out on this year’s draft in the first two rounds won’t hurt them. The contract for Vokoun is a bit hefty ($5.5M p/s or so), but the guy is a proven starter, good numbers and sure as hell is better than Toskala, safer than Bryzgalov, and better than Fernandez.

  5. malkin_71 says:

I think they did this to get Espsito and reunite the Radulov and Espsioto connetion but Boston will probly get him 8th.

  6. gregpb says:

Voukon is a good goalie forsure, but Florida just got jobbed 2 years in a row. A 1st and 2 2nd's???? Got to be joking. Looks like Phoenix will be after Bryzgalov or Raycrap now.

  7. passionch says:

Unless some teams trades to move up/down.

  8. tancred says:

Wow, that's a surprising one!  I can't say how it would all boil down with the draft picks, but I like it from a Florida perspective.  Vokoun is good!  Is the Florida defense that would be playing in front of him better than what he's used to?  Not so sure about that.  Still, great move by Florida.

Now that Florida went for an unexpected goalie option, where does that leave the other goalies that were rumored to be available and in demand (Fernandez, Bryzgalov, Cujo, etc)?
  9. passionch says:

This confirms to me that the Preds aren't going to be contenders next season and Florida now has a proven no. 1 goalie with a big paycheck but that's normal in this league.

  10. mikster says:

I don’t think it matters for the Panthers that they are losing draft picks in a weak draft anyway since they have youth to work with for a few years. Horton, Weiss, Bo, Van Ryn, Welch, Frolik, Booth, Sprukts, McArdle.

They got the goalie and Vokoun + Belfour will be a solid tandem.

  11. gregpb says:

Vokoun is by no means better than Toskala. Vokoun will struggle in Florida with that team. Toskala will flourish in Toronto and be a candidate for the Vezina with that defence infront of him.

  12. Veggetto19 says:

i guess this mean kariya and forsberg are up for grabs as well any speculation as to where they will likely sign?

  13. Jeff198 says:

Well 5.5 M a season for a proven goaltender like Vokoun is pretty good.

Hopefully for Florida he stays healthy !

    Good Luck !!

  14. Have2BeLeaf says:

Why did they trade Luongo again?

  15. Glucker says:

for the same reason we gave his pick away, they're idiots

  16. mikster says:

(sigh)…. ok…what did you smoke this time? đŸ˜‰

  17. mojo19 says:

I think its like 5.7 mil on average and still 3 or 4 years left.

  18. mikster says:

Keenan traded him and got fired for it. Martin is just trying to make up for it now.

But Luongo wanted out anyway as he rejected all sorts of offers. Many Panthers fans were not pleased with how he handles the negotiations either.

  19. mojo19 says:

True, but watch out for Chicago to improve a lot. And St.Louis to persue a big free agent.

  20. mojo19 says:

I agree with Gregpb, except I don't think he'll challenge for a Vezina because I see them splitting the games, and the Vezina generally is considered to a work horse (see Luongo, Brodeur).

However Toskala and Vokoun are similar calibre, except Vokoun is 4 times more pricey. I'll take Toskala thanks.

Leafs to take the east. I'm pumped.

  21. SPaRTiGaS says:

wow, PREDS… are you tryin to screw Basallie over or what? or is is the city… selling all the good players is going to drive fans away, and the preds dont have many to drive away as it is…

i want a GOOD team to go watch in hamilton.. STOP SCREWING THIS UP FOR ME!

  22. gregpb says:

I see Razor traded and Cujo signed as the backup for 850K

  23. 29teamsrock says:

And JFK prefered to get Tosk and Bell? Ohh it's a sad day for you leaf fans it trully is

  24. 29teamsrock says:

LOL JFK was a good man how dare I mess that one up… I must be a leaf fan… JFJ

  25. phat_cat says:

Kariya will go back to Anehiem. As far as forsberg…..He will either retire or play in Vancouver….or whatever city Naslund may end up in, if he is traded!

  26. flyerjim says:

They're doing this for Balsillie.  He needs Nashville to go in the tank in sales and interest before the league will approve a move.

  27. mojo19 says:

I think JFJ likes Razor. Maybe he'll be traded but I think they'd make a good tandem. Since Raycroft is a hot and cold goalie, if he plays a really good game, let him play the next, then go back to Vesa. Then Vesa plays a few and cools off – flip Razor back in for a couple. I really think they'd make a good tandem, and Vesa is a tandem goalie.

Besides a lot of the more succesful teams in terms of goaltending are teams that had a close to 50-50 split. See Bryz-Giggy, Vesa-Nabby, Mason-Tvo, Fernandez-Backstrom. Its a good system, going with the hot hand.

  28. mojo19 says:

I really didn't think they'd do it but yeah. If they can finish under .500 that should be enough to lose the interest of their fans and support the move to Hamilton.

  29. wingsfan13 says:

"that defence in front of him" o you mean the drivers ed course of pilons that is hal gill and kubina

  30. UWSensFan says:

Finishing under .500 should attract enough fans to sell out 10 games…if you add up attendances from all 41 home games.  Part of me wonders if Balsillie has a hand in this, or if it's just the fact that the current owner is probably going to be on the hook for next season's salary because Betteman & Co. don't want any more Canadian teams.
