Ranger trade possible?

So, 8 games into the season, and the New York Rangers have minimal offensive production, while their defense and goaltending has been generally outstanding, which should be leading to some wins. The Rangers have now been shutout 3 times this season and have scored so few goals since 1950.According to Ecklund (as unreliable as he is), Ganiey was in attendance at last night Rangers/Penguins game, and could possibly be looking for a deal with the Rangers.

It also states the Rangers have placed Tomas Pock on waivers, and I do feel for Pock, but I hope a good teams picks him up and utilizes his services.

Some comments made to these posts suggest the possibility of trading Jagr, and I agree. Drury and Gomez are obviously in the Rangers long-term plans, and Jagr is only on for the next season, unless he opts for more. It’s becoming apparent that Jagr’s play style is not conforming with that of Drury or Gomez, who seem to thrive on a faster pace that Jagr does not provide. If Jagr is traded, it would allow the Rangers younger and faster wingers the chance to play with Gomez and fully utilize their combined speed. That also leaves Drury to play with Shanahan and Avery upon his return, or the potential return the Rangers would get back for Jagr.

At this point I feel the defense is fine and King Henrik has been phenomonal on a team that really needs to help him out on the offensive side. Most of the Rangers defensive liabilities will be gone to the UFA pool this summer, and Tyutin and Girardi will move up to be the future #1 line of the Rangers, along with a slew of talented youngsters in Hartford and a potential UFA add-on this summer.

The bigger problem with this team is the offense, and I would not mind seeing Jagr go in order to utilize Gomez and Drury the way they should be. I would much rather see the Rangers obtain help for Drury and Gomez rather than help for Jagr, and provide for the current and long-term.

Thoughts would be appreciated.

for almost 1/3 of the price of gomez and drury, you could have nylander and no offense problems

  2. wingsfan13 says:

funny how after all the signings new york made they have a problem with offense of all things. I think my prediction is coming true of an implosion of ego leaders. Rangers always bring in too much outside help and undermine the heart of youth.

    eklund…lol

  4. NHLman says:

Who would you even trade Jagr for? Tell me what player? It's not a matter of matching talents, but talents and availability, plus salaries. Don't forget Jagr's only ~5 million against the cap.

Your ready to give up on the team after 8 games? Some fan you are then. Last year this team didn't hit its stride until Februrary. Don't be hasty.

Ya early, but too many cooks in the kitchen.

  6. wheresthesoda says:

Hey folks lets take it easy, we're only 8 games into the season, and Sather will not trade Jagr, he is obviously "the man" on the team and the captain.

I can not see any fowards on this team to be on his way out, the only tradeable fowards would be Hossa or Straka, but why trade the 2 guys that have obvious chemistry with Jagr?

There is also the possibility of Mara or Malik to be traded, my money is on Mara, a little overpaid considered he's a 3rd pairing defensman.

  7. wheresthesoda says:

One more thing, Callahan is down with a sprained knee, this could ignite a trade since the Rangers are at a loss of depth for the top 3 lines, but with a game looming for thursday night, someone will be called up ….but who, lauri korpikoski, alex bourret, or the darkhourse of greg moore who has had a fine start for hartford this season.

  8. eron says:

I don't believe Ranger fans were ever that comfortable with Jagr and sort of felt like he was a placeholder for the Rangers.  The reactions I seen for Gomez and Drury far outweighed the reaction of trading for Jagr.  It's as if people feel a future for the franchise with Gomez and Drury, maybe you can say a more "North American" feel to the team.  It's a sad truth but Canadian/Original Six teams, no matter if the franchise elects a great European captain, they want their team lead by the North Americans.

The belief is that Jagr might have some interest in being centered by Tomas Plekanec (or so Hab fans like to believe) so if Gainey + NYR/PIT game = Trade for Jagr, I'm all for it.  I'm sure Ranger fans want New York state local Chris Higgins in return, but I doubt Gainey would do that.  Alex Kovalev or Michael Ryder seems like the kind of player to go to the Rangers, Kovalev making sense due to living in New York and just getting out of his burn out funk and playing great so far.

Jagr to the Habs?  I'd love to see 68 in the Bleu, Blanc et Rouge.  However, I'll believe it when I see it.

P.S: Eklund's Avery rumours are so horrid.  Avery + French Canadians = Death

  9. rangers11 says:

nylander was looking for a 4 year deal and theres no reason to keep him longer than jagr might be on the team. also hed be 39 at the end of the deal

  10. habsrock99 says:

I am a Habs fan and I hate Jagr with a passion and I am seriously hoping Montreal doesn't get him because I just don't think I can bring myslf to cheering on the guy who had long-ass hair and used to salute after every goal. But, if it means getting Montreal to the play-offs, go for it. As long as Jagr goes to Montreal or to someone other then Ottawa, Toronto, Buffalo or Boston, I'll be fairly happy.

Also, what'd Montreal have to give up? Kovalev for sure considering he's the highest paid player available on Montreal. Higgins? Not a chance in hell. Komisarek? Hell no. Plekanec? Fat chance. Grabovski? Possibly. The only logical trade I can think of is:

To Montreal (2.124 in Cap Space):
    Jagr-4.940
Petr Prucha-1.600 (He has fallen out of favour in NY and does take up Cap space)
    Draft Pick(2nd or 3rd rounder maybe a 4th)
    Total: 6.55

To NY Rangers (-0.825 in Cap Space):
    Kovalev-4.500
    Grabovski-0.725
Draft Pick(1st or 2nd rounder maybe 2 picks)
    Total:5.225

This is all I could muster up where the talent and Cap Hits really added up. This trade leaves the Rangers with 0.500 in Cap space and gets them under the Cap. This also gives Montreal a True #1 Line talent that can hit 100 points at will. Will it happen? I highly dout it, especially with Jagr's option for next year in question. Would Gainey risk a piece of the future (Grabovski) for a guy who could walk at year's end? I don't know. But, if I was a GM, I'd probably do this trade because Montreal does have another Kostitsyn in Hamilton, one which I believe is better, which could replace Grabovski in case Jagr walks. Also, if this trade were pulled off, maybe Prucha could hit 30 goals again. Maybe Grabovski hits his stride and makes Ranger fans happy with dazzling moves. Maybe Kovalev regains his Pittsburgh form and scores around 40 goals and 90 points.

  12. ranger_fan says:

Lets not get ahead of yourselves. Honestly, who did not see this happening? It takes time, especially with a transition game as weak as the Rangers. I said along Straka needs to center Jagr with Hossa- kinda late now to do so. That way we would have three feared lines with Gomez and a speedy Callahan and Prucha with with – two guys with great shots.

    If I am Slats…
    1. Waive/Trade Steve Valiquette, Paul Mara and Marek Malik. there is 6.5 million off the cap figure.

    2. Claim David Aebischer, Freddy Meyer

    3. Try for a top 3 defenseman. One of the Dmen in #1 could be used for bait. Who outside of NY fans wouldn't want Malik who is like +90 last three seasons. And Mara still has a lot of offensive potential. I don't like the idea of Jovo; but rumors have popped up of Derek Morris.
[time for a leaf fan like offer]!
    To NYR: Derek Morris,
    To PHO: Mara/Malik; Al Montoya

After all that still the potentially great offense, a defense with out too many liabilities; Meyer would probably be the biggest. A new transition game – Derek Morris, Meyer, and Rozival can all move the puck; and a respectable goalie who would be a 50,000 cap hit more than Valiquette. On top of that we clear cap space to use if needed in February.

  13. ranger_fan says:

Kovalev will not be given a third chance in NY – he simply can't do it.

  14. ranger_fan says:

I would personally want Ryder and Chipchura, perhaps Yan Denis

  15. ranger_fan says:

Have Dawes on that line – he has been our best forward. Don't be shocked to see Jessiman get some 4th line action to get a taste of the NHL too- motivation if you will.

  16. I-BE-LEAF says:

Agreed! Eklund, Simmons, Lankhof, lions, tigers, and bears – oh my.

I personally am so tired of “insider” b.s and media spin doctors having an impact with the teams we grow to love. Now I’m not saying I’m a Rangers fan but still… enough with Eklund already.

If I was rich, I’d invite them all to my retreat for a weekend of tom foolery. Then, my private jet with them all on board would mysteriously fly straight into a cliff.

  17. phat_cat says:

If Atlanta can't get a deal done with hossa. Maybe the rangers look that way. forgert montreal. Trade Jagr for Hossa. The guy has the skill to score and the speed to keep up to the style of play drury and gomez are bringing to the table.

  18. TheStryker says:

I don't think the Rangers should have signed both Drury and Gomez. They didn't need both. What they did need was a true shut down D-man. Not that this will happen in any way, but here's my trade scenario

    Ryder,Grabovski,Hamrlik
    To Rangers for
    Mara,Avery,Orr,Kasparitis(to even out the money)

  19. MtlHabs09 says:

I know you're speculating but thats just an awful deal for Montreal…

  20. LaKingsFan626 says:

It seems like the only thing missing from the team so far is playing Rangers hockey.  There's no real spark and toughness that the Rangers normally play with.  When Avery gets back into the mix I'm pretty sure it'll spark the team like last season.  Trust me giving away Avery hasn't helped the Kings play any harder.

  21. Girardi46 says:

Just have to say, don't EVER question my level of being a Rangers fan.  I have been and always will be a die-hard Rangers fan.  Also, NEVER did I say I was giving up on this team.  I simply responded to rumblings I've heard about rumored or possible trade possibilities and my insight into it.

  22. pj1199 says:

Rangers will never take Kovalev for a third time. His first time around he had 1 good season. The second time around he blew ass. No need to take another shot with him.

Rangers will not trade Jagr anyway. We had the same rumblings here in NY last year when they were losing. Once Avery comes back you will notice a different team at MSG

    LETS GO RANGERS!!!

  23. thehockeyguru says:

    To Pittsburgh: Jaromir Jagr

To New York: Erik Christensen and 2008 and 2009 1st round picks

One can dream right? Just imagine Jagr back in the burgh with Sid The Kid or Geno… ahh man just sick video game sick! It's not like we need the draft picks and Christensen is never going to turn into the winger that he needs to be here. Plus and a big plus this is, Pittsburgh has the cap space for Jaromir. But like I said before this is just wishful thinking.

  24. habsrock99 says:

Agreed!! Why would you trade a player who WANTS to be in Montreal? Kasparaitis sucks and is useless to have. I'd take Avery but that's about it.

  25. habsrock99 says:

I don't really want Kovalev out of Montreal right now, he's played tremendous hockey through the first 8 games. But, like i said, that ws the only real logical trade i could muster up. Plus it was like 1:30 in the morning lol

  26. habsrock99 says:

And put the Rangers over the Cap even more? Not a chance in hell. Plus, Rangers wouldn't be able to sign Hossa in the off-season, so it'd be a waste of time to get him.

  27. Habroller says:

    Haha!

    That's just laughable!

  28. azzkikr2100 says:

I am curious why all canadian and leaf fans think that you guys always will get something in return for nothing. NO ONE wants your problems (Kovalev, Mccabe, Kabrele, Kubina) for someone as talented as Jagr or whoever you guys want (I hate jagr but he is talented).

That is the base of your so called trade. How about trade someone that means something to your team for someone that means something to the team that you want to rip off (Jagr). Think of it like that.

The reason i say this is that it rarely happens that one team overwhelmingly benefits from a rediculous trade like this that you proposed.

And look at your teams, its obvious that things never happen the way the fans or the organizations would like – which is proof that rediculous trades like this will never happen.

Sometimes it happens but this will not happen for someone like Jagr.

Please think before you post rediculous things – and that goes for everyone, not just you…

No one wants to see/hear your rediculous one sided offers.

  29. azzkikr2100 says:

I think the rangers would be more interested in prospects rather than picks that will most likely be pretty high in the first round.

Id say Christensen and Esposito and maybe one first or second rounder for him.

I dont really like Jagr to much, but if he is willing to come back to pittsburgh and work his ass off, i will accept it. He also needs to take a backseat roll, because sid is the star.

    good idea =)

  30. Habroller says:

    Add Letang, make the 2009 pick a 2nd instead of a 1st, and maybe you'll have a deal…

  31. NYR88Express says:

Why is almost everyone convinced that the Rangers will give up their aging goods for another team’s used goods? Jagr for Kovalev? I’d keep Jagr anyday…

But then again, what team will part with their young, rising stars to get our aging goods?

Such a trade that would rid the Rangers of Jagr would have to include a package with some rising Rangers star or prospect IN EXCHANGE for a good-to-great younger player and any cumbersome or expiring contract…

There’s no other way the Rangers could get something good in return

  32. wheresthesoda says:

i would love to see jessiman get some time with the club

  33. beckfan05 says:

Dont forget about Cullen's salary too

  34. beckfan05 says:

Thats why in the last game they played they had 7 guys in the lineup with 2 or fewer years experience?

  35. beckfan05 says:

If I recall, you say you wouldnt mind seeing Jagr go in the last sentence.

  36. Girardi46 says:

    Sorry… JAGR trade rumors…

  37. habsrock99 says:

Kovalev is one of the single most talented players in the World. If he's happy, which he is right now, he produces, like he is right now. Mikail Grabovski is a rising prospect with Star potential. Jagr's better days are long behind him. Jagr's no longer the star he once was and has to be happy to produce and apparently, he isn't happy in New York otherwise he'd be producing. Now, did I once say that this trade proposal was the real deal? No. I was only speculating that this was the only possible trade that had the talent as well as the numbers add up. What, you want Ryder and not Kovalev? Fine, but it hurts the Rangers terribly. You're not gonna get top prospects for a guy who has seen better days. It's like the Leaf fans thinking they can bring in 2-3 Top Prospects, 2 1st round draft choices and an elite NHL star for Sundin alone. You can't add much more to what I proposed without eithr clearly ripping off the Habs or putting the Rangers over th cap.

  38. habsrock99 says:

And I suppose Erik Christienson, Angelo Esposito and a Draft Pick are better then Kovalev, Grabovski, a Draft pick or two as well as a Prospect?

  39. habsrock99 says:

Also, if you would have actually read the comment, I put "I highly DOUBT it would happen anyways" and went on to list a few reasons why.

  40. wheresthesoda says:

the way i see it, if the Rangers didnt sign drury and gomez everyone would be saying the rangers shouldve signed both of them because they can't score, but now your neglecting the one thing thats been really solid on this club is there defense by comittee and phenonminal goaltending by lundqvist

  41. nyrhockey094 says:

Not to mention, that YOUTH scored both goals tonight in Nigel Dawes.

  42. nyrhockey094 says:

No disrespect here bud, but Kovalev will not come to the Rangers. And as for you saying no chance in hell to some one like Komaserik, think again. Jagr when happy could quite possibly be the most dominant player in the game. He showed that in 05-06, and 06-07.

Jagr will fetch a hefty amount. And yeah to put it nicely, you cant give a problem player for talent. Jagr may be a primadonna but skill wise Jagr>>>>>Kovalev. Nothing against kovalev, hes a great player, just A not as good as Jagr, and B not with the Rangers. And Prucha will go no where. Hes in no ones dog house and hasnt even come close to worn his welcome. He hustles every shift, gives 120% every game. He may not be scoring but he is an important part what what the Rangers used to lack, Heart.

Jagr will easly fetch one of those prospects you were talking about. If not from you, from somewhere else. Easily a top six foward and blue as blue chip can get prospect.

  43. beckfan05 says:

And youth also posted the shutout as well!

  44. habsrock99 says:

Now here's what I have to say, the Rangers won't get any real part of the future from Montreal with Jagr's contract in doubt. He can opt out after this season and become a UFA. Komisarek is too important to Montreal for them to trade him. As for prospects, how many do the Rangers want because we got at least 10-15, and they aren't getting any younger in Hamilton. As for Prucha being in the dog house, I'm just going by what I hear on Sportsnet, TSN, The Score, etc. If he's not, then my bad.

  45. MikeGartner says:

NOBODY WANTS KOVALEV! Simple as that. Jagr for Kovalev is assinine.

  46. habsrock99 says:

Nobody "wanted" Samsonov and if I recall correctly, he's in Chicago right now.

  47. 1messier1 says:

well i dont believe that avery is gonna make the difference ,the offence sucks the are not coming together, and cant seem to put the puck in the back of the net.this team is very similar to the team they overpaid for just before the lockout.and had  a garbage sale at the end of the season and finnally let the young kids play ,and they played pretty well.once again they have to many overpayed allstars all wanting to be the star on the ice,how about just play your game and let renny get the lines adjusted so we can see some goals,if not send them all to the minors and bring up the kids and let them play ,id rather see the young kids play with some heart and drive than the stars just skating on the new york rangers ice capades show.and definatly they need to send mara packing he is the most useless defenceman they have, and they send pock down and put him on waivers? way to go sather good decision….hell could have sent mara down on waivers and at least given kasper a shot ,until you found  a defenseman to trade for.but hey lets pay these guys stupid money to play in new york and get no return, heck ill play for 3 mil a year and skate circles on ice or sit the bench or even better play in the AHL.i work my ass for my paycheck and its far less than 3mil a season,so ill take  a pay raise to just wear  a blueshirt and not have to work for it anyday!!!!and yes i am a die hard blueshirts fan as like most everyone else this season is very dissapointing so far and the way its going we can wash it before long if this play style continues, changes need to be made, hope they dont wait to long into the season to realize that.

    FIRE SATHER AND BETTMAN

    GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
