Sean Avery’s days in New York appear to be over with the news that he was placed on waivers by the Rangers on Tuesday.

If he clears, the Rangers could send him to their American Hockey League affiliate in Hartford. According to his agent Pat Morris, playing in Europe is among his other options.

Avery is entering the final year of a $4 million contract. His salary cap hit is $1.93 million because the Dallas Stars, his former team, are still on the hook for the balance after he was claimed on re-entry waivers by the Rangers in 2008-09.

The feisty and controversial forward failed to register a point in the preseason and was a healthy scratch in the team’s last two exhibition games in Europe.

God, the last line is just so *****ing stupid.  He barely played in preseason. Keeping Avery would've been better than kicking Christensen, who is only around for shootouts.  Both guys were fighting for the 13th spot, but the truth is torts didn't want Avery from the start, and never even gave him a chance to make the team.

I'd take him. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

Blue Jackets should grab him. Why not? They have a hard time recruiting talent, and have doen a below average job at drafting with all their high picks over the years. They make the big swap for Carter, sign big money Wisniewski, and bring in veteran Vinny Prospal. I think it would only make sense for that team to grab Avery and hope for the best.

  4. Boston_Bruins says:

Haha not sure claiming Avery will help them to recruit talent. He is only signed for one more year though, so why not.

You only hate Avery when he's not on your team. Take him.

Tom Renney is the one coach who always found the best way to utilize Avery…Tom Renney is the coach of the Edmonton Oilers….Tom Renney has suggested that the Oilers pick up Avery and see the guy who made the Rangers win games come to the Oil.

Plus I have a feeling the city of Calgary still holds a level of hate for Avery so why not?
I just have a feeling we aren't gonna see the last of Avery.

I'd like that, even as a fan of the Flames. Good to get a little hate going on between the two.

I've always thought Avery was a better hockey player than many gave him credit. His antics always got in his way, which was his biggest issue.
He's a capable pest. He can get you 10 – 15 goals, 25 – 35 points and just piss the hell out of opposing teams.
How does the whole cap hit work for him? Does Dallas still pay half of his salary? What if he's brought back up on re-entry? That would be an interesting deal. Three team's paying him lol.

I wasn't saying it would help them recruit talent. I'm saying they have a hard time doing it, Avery is the talent, so go get him.
