Redden signs 2-year deal with Senators Staff

6/29/2006 2:59:00 PM

The Ottawa Senators have locked up one of their elite blueliners, as sources tell TSN the team has signed defenceman Wade Redden to a two-year contract.

Speculation is that the deal is worth $13 million. The team is expected to make a formal announcement over the next 24 hours.

Redden, 29, was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on Saturday.

Redden scored 50 points, and posted a plus-35 rating, in 65 regular season games in 2005-2006, then added ten points in nine playoff games.

During his nine-year career in Ottawa, Redden has tallied 336 points in 694 games, with an impressive plus-147 rating.

More to follow.

if I had to pick one D-man, all things considered (including age), it would be Redden.

  2. 19AVSFANFoLIFE19 says:

6.5 per year and hes supposedly the easier one to sign?

  3. FlyersfanKyle says:

that big goof chara is gonna demand somthing like 7 so….

  4. Marcos2990 says:

    2 years/ $13 millon seems like alot

  5. Milohabs says:

This signing is huge. The new cap-NHL shows that Ottawa will A) Not be able to sign Chara, or B) if they sign Chara, they will miss out on goaltending and/or depth (which is needed to win championships). The line up right now 9according to TSN.CA, looks like this

    Heatley Alfredsson ???

    ??? ??? ???

    ??? Fisher Smolinski

    McGratton ??? Eaves

    Redden ???

    Phillips Meszaros

    Volchenkov ???

Those are some major holes they need to sign to fill the line up. Obviously Spezza will be signed for big money, but as it stands the Sens have commited just under $25,000,000 for the year and still have 10 roster spots to fill.

This leaves them with 19 million. It seems pretty high, but Spezza will make 3-4, and a good goalie may cost something close to that. Then there is Havlat. The money will dry up quick, and Ottawa, at the end of the day, will most likely be weaker then last season.

  6. muckies says:

Shaeffer, Vermette, Neil and Emery, Scuebert will all come cheap, +/- average of 1.5 million each, then they have the Russian Rookie Kaigorodov at about $700 000, they have enough to get Spezza and a solid D man under contract.

  7. mikster says:

Wow, i did not know never winning a Vezina and/or a Cup could get you that much money, same as Neidermeyer.

Glad he ain’t a Ranger/Panther. I shouldn’t speak so soon either though, Chara may be going to the Big Apple.

  8. Freeze says:

Looks like Chara will be playing elsewhere.

  9. FlyersfanKyle says:

what about a number one goalie?

  10. Marcos2990 says:

    probably to the rangers

  11. Marcos2990 says:

    most likey to the rangers

  12. muckies says:

Wonder where Chara is going? I hope Phoenix.

  13. oildude says:

Maybe the Oilers should target Chara

  14. zdeno_duchesne says:

expect smolinski to be sent somewhere

  15. zdeno_duchesne says:

not a bad idea. if there’s someone out there to replace pronger, it may as well be chara.

  16. Turnbull says:

Wow…6.5 mil per year,….whats Chara going to get?? That seems like alot of $ for a guy that had a horrible post-season.

  17. leafs_r_a_joke says:

Redden can thank Ferguson for this contract, he may not be worth the reported amount but it woulda been a huge slap in the face to give him less the Mccabe got.

  18. bustaheims says:

Smolinski’s not going to get you a number 1 goalie.

  19. bleedingblu says:

I think you mean the Norris Trophy. Vezina is for the best goal tender.

  20. bringbacktocchet says:

l.a.??? kings have cap room and need help on d. no luc, roenick, demitra, parrish(?) lombardi could do well here.

  21. magnifikko says:

i think i just pee my pants

  22. magnifikko says:

i see chara playing for the Habs…the only problem i see is the taxes…but im sure ganey would offer him 7 m. imagine Markov and Chara at powerplay with st louis kovalev and koivu….it would kill.

Eshhh….maybe im just dreaming…but damnnnn imagine that.

  23. 92-93 says:

Redden was going to get this much regardless of what McCabe got. In fact i was surprised Redden didnt get more money.

i guess there are a lot of hockey fans out there who just cannot fathom or swallow the fact that teams are willing to pay big bucks for premium defencemen … and i really dont care what you think of McCabe or Kaberle.

  24. lesglorieux says:

    i agree. over. priced.

  25. leafs_r_a_joke says:

Thats cool, be proud of them two, just dont expect to make the playoffs.

  26. Mainer87 says:

I would love to c chara in Montreal too. I’m not sure what is going to happen but bob gainey is a smart and quiet GM. Maybe he is looking at chara and nobody knows about it. The habs got plenty of cap room so u never know.

  27. bleed_penguins says:

I wonder what the chances are of the Pens picking Chara up. I know that they are looking into getting some solid defence, and I have to believe this means a #1 guy. My guess is that the Pens are looking into signing Jovo, but again, it’s just a guess.

  28. UWSensFan says:

Totally agree. Now, they can go after Chara and hopefully he takes a similar deal…especially since Redden is a better defenseman!

  29. UWSensFan says:

yeppers…and he’s not worth more than Redden…look at the way the team played when he was not on the ice.

  30. UWSensFan says:

No, but he’ll clear cap space for one

  31. 92-93 says:

sure, they made the playoffs as a duo the previous 4 or 5 seasons and missed it last year by 3 points … and they were the premium duo and 2nd and 3rd on the team in points …

but lets just ignore the facts.

as for not making the playoffs – that shouldnt be too surprising considering the leafs are a team in transition. but at least when we make the playoffs we more likely than not make it beyond the first and 2nd rounds on a consistent basis.

  32. LeafsJaysRapsBillsManU says:

No argument from me. Considering who this guy is and what he still has the potential to do, this may in fact be considered a steal in a few months. As for Chara, I get the feeling that he is much more a mercenary than Redden is and if he’s offered max, he’s going to take it no matter what the cir*****stances are.

  33. LeafsJaysRapsBillsManU says:

You gotta think the disaster that was the Sergei Gonchar signing probably will scare the Pens off in making a grab at another big ticket d-man…that being said, it’s ludicrous to compare Gonchar to Chara, and if Pittsburgh thinks that Chara can fit into their plans, then go nuts, because Zdeno is a stud.

  34. my_sphincter says:

Rumor has it, they will trade Havlat for a #1 goaltender.
