Redden to take pay cut to stay?

Icon SMI and other media outlets are reporting that Wade Redden may be willing to take a pay cut to stay with the powerhouse Senators next season.

Redden is presently poised to become a UFA at the end of this season however it is becoming apparent that he is very happy with the situation that he is presently in. The article suggests that Redden is willing to take a cut on his 6.5 million dollar salary in order to stay in Ottawa. Apparently the group of players and the wining atmosphere are incentive to leave money behind in order to stay. It should not be overlooked that the article does note that Redden will have to talk to his agent before making any decisions. HTR believes that things could still get interesting.

He probably would have had Spezza signed for $6.5M/yr.

The only way Redden stays is if it is a 6 year deal

  2. muckies says:

I do think the Sens will keep him if its the right deal. He'll have to take Phillips money at $3.5/season, a 3 million dollar pay cut – huge when a team like Washington could easily pay him close to 6 million.

They'll have to trade Corvo – (no huge lose there with Brian Lee being NHL ready next season) and Gerber.

I hope they keep Redden – he has given so much to the team and Ottawa. I hope he plays here and they retire #6 alongside #11, #4, #15, #19, and #12.

3 years 10 million, they could afford him if he'll take that pay cut

If i was Melnyk, i’d throw 3/12 at him. If he doesn’t bite, see ya.

  4. senators101 says:

Sign him for 4-4.5 max.  I know that's still really expensive, but then we could trade Corvo's 2.5 mil elsewhere.  I would spend the extra 1.5 on redden and keep him over corvo.  He does everything Corvo does but he's extremely solid in his own zone.

Ottawa has 40 million commited next year for 10 players. Which means they have about 10-12 million to sign another 10-13 players. Granted most of the big names are signed, the players left are currently making about 1 million each give or take abit, but they'll all want pay raises.

This 10-12 millon for 10-13 players, has to fit Redden in there which I don't see happening unless he takes a BIG paycut. Keep in mind one of the goalies has to be moved which will free up 3.5 million or so. They're also going to have to move a defenceman either Corvo's 2.5 million salary or trade Mezaros as he'll be looking for a raise from about 1 million to 2-2.5 million. The Sens also have Vermette+Eaves+Kelly to sign, Vermette I'm thinking 2-2.5 million, Kelly close to 2 million, Eaves I'd play hardball with unless he's having a good year and give him 1.2-1.5 million.

After all that Redden still has to take a big paycut… I'm thinking no more than 4 million/year or you'll have to let him walk and sign another defenceman.

Whether we keep Redden and trade a d-man or lose him, there will be one spot next year for Brian Lee, can't wait to see how he pans out.

I dont htink he is worth the money hes making AT ALL.  Us Leaf fans wail on Bryan McCabe all the time for making so much moneybut he makes 750k less then Redden and has put up better numbers overall in the past few seasons.  One can argue that Redden is probably better defensively then McCabe (who isnt) but that isnt the point, he is OVERPAID.

The only way he will make the same type of money he is making this year is if a team is desperate and has the cap space then they will do it.  Other then that if he wants to play for a team that has a legitimate shot at the cup he HAS to take a pay cut because at the end of the day for 6.5 million dollars they can find someone better OR allocate the cash to patch some other hole in the organisation (granted there arent many holes in the sens lineup).

I’ve always loved Redden as a D-man. If he takes a pay cut he’ll only increase my opinion of him.

If he doesn’t.. it doesn’t change a thing!

If he doesn’t sign, i’d love to have him in Philly.

screw  redden they shoulda kept chara when they had em…………… on another note anyone like how neil waited for someone to seperate mark bell from punchin him in da face b4 neil dropped his gloves……not a leaf fan but i hate this guy and i would love to see a guy like bell kick da crap outta him

  9. wayne2 says:

At the right price i`d love to see Redden stay. This said IMO the right price is around 3.5/4.5 range max.If he is willing to that kind of money i`d sign him for 3-4 years and trade Corvo.LA already stated they would love him back(Lee will take his place soon) and they need a goalie.
Still not sure is i`d trade Gerber or Emery but here`s one:
    To LA:Gerber + Corvo(add a pick if needed)
To Ottawa:either one of Dustin Brown,Frolov or Camalleri.

  10. PointMeAtTheSky says:

    42.014 for 6 forwards, 5 defensemen, 2 goalies. That leaves 8.286 for 6 forwards and a defenseman.

If we trade Corvo 2.500 and Gerber 3.700, that's an extra 6.2 million. So that's 14.486 for 6 forwards, 2 defensemen and a goalie.

If we can, waive Nycholat (unless he starts playing really well) so that's an extra .550. That leaves us with 15.036 to sign 6 forwards, 3 defenseman and a goalie.

    So, worst….
    4.5 million for Redden,
    2.5 million for Vermette,
    4 million for Meszaros
    2 million for Kelly.
That's 13 million for 8 forwards, 5 defensemen and a goalie. Which leaves us 2.036 to sign 4 forwards, a defenseman and a goalie.

But, at best if we can sign them cheaper
    3.5 million for Redden
    2 million for Vermette
    3.5 million for Meszaros
    1.5 million for Kelly
10.5 for 8 forwards, 5 defenseman and a goalie. Which leaves us 4.536 to sign 4 forwards, an defenseman and a goalie. That's an average of .750 for those 6 players.

So, if Redden will take a 3 million pay cut, and Kelly, Vermette and Meszaros don't try to break the bank, and we can sign some more cheap veterans or bring up some prospects, we will be tight but fine.

  11. PointMeAtTheSky says:

Any of those players would be expensive salary-wise.

I would rather see the trade be for draft picks/prospects.

We have a great team right now. With Spezza, Heatley, Alfredsson we have a top 3 that would make any team envious. And so far it seems that Vermette and Fisher are developing into top 6 forwards.

If we can keep this core…Spezza, Heatley, Alfredsson, Fisher, Neil, Phillips, Volchenkov, Schubert, Vermette, Kelly, Meszaros, Redden and supplement that with cheap veterans and prospects, we will be an annual contender.

So, for Corvo and Gerber, we need a salary dump to re-sign our core players. If we got Brown, Frolov or Cammaleri, it would just be over-kill and take valuable cap space.

  12. muckies says:

nice break down, I like the numbers.  I don't think there is anyway Mezsaros makes more money than Phillips or Volchenkov – they'll just trade him if he demands that much –
I think Kelly as well will be around 2.3. million

Take 1 million away from Meszaros and give it to Kelly and the numbers still balance, what a sick and talented team that would be – they'll be the best for the next 3 seasons if they could make it all work

  13. cartino says:

I don't think Mezaros won't get more than 2.5/y he's still an RFA, and if he wants 3ish+ or someone gives us an offer sheet… he can go!

Vermette will probably get 2.5ish, get him signed incase an offer sheet comes

Kelly will probably want closer to 2 million.

Don't forget Eaves is an RFA, unless he has a good year.. you could probably sign him for about 1.5 million.

  14. senators101 says:

Meszaros at 4? no way man.  He'll get a short-term contract at like 2-2.5 MAX.

  15. leafy says:

As I suggested yesterday.  See?  Even Redden listens to me.

  16. wayne2 says:

Your probably right,i was just being greedy hehe.

  17. wayne2 says:

Personnaly,4 mil for Meszaros is way too much.He is still young and although very promissing lets start slowly.
2.5 mil for meszaros is plenty to start with.
the rest would be very goos signings.
