Report: Amonte close to deal with Leafs

According to the Fan 590, a Toronto area sports radio station, who spoke with Amonte’s agent, Tony AMonte and the Toronto Maple Leafs are very close to a deal. They almost had it completed last night, but it didn’t evolve into a signing, but talks continue at the moment. Amonte’s agent said that Tony was excited about a chance to play for the Leafs, and is very close friends with Travis Green and Bryan McCabe.

I wish the isles had players like McCabe and Green so they could ask Amonte to take a pay cut to play here. Oh, we did have McCabe ad Green! Dang oh well…. Actually screw Amonte, he’s actually friends with the “gutless-puke”? I can see being friends with McCabe, he is the man. But GUTLESS-PUKEBOY?!?! SCREW’EM!!!!!

  2. NYR says:

At this point I seriously doubt Amonte will sign with the Leafs. If they were so close why hasnt he signed 24 hrs later?

There must be one “make or break” term thats holding the signing back, and Tony is running out of options.

I don’t know how agressively the Rangers are acting, but probably not that agressive, if they were they would have had him by now. And Boston and Philly aren’t showing any interest for some reason.

The Islanders seem to be out of the race also.

So it seems at this point it’s either the Leafs or Blueshirts. As much as I would love to see Amonte in Broadway Blue, at this point I just want him to cross his freakin’ t and get on with it. I’m tired of comming here every ten minutes and seeing the same thing. I need some closure on the whole issue.

It’s hard to sleep when you know theres one more big fish swimming around in a rather small pond.

I am not a Leafs or Stars fans,

but I think almost everyone in hockey knows the Stars had a bad season and the Leafs as always rode Cujo into a home ice advantage playoff spot. Amonte is not too skilled to join the Leafs I think he may be worried he is not skilled enough. Its common knowledge that Cujo carried that team @ time way farther then the deserved to go and with him gone every player on that team is going to have to play that much harder. Amonte will be “the guy we got with Cujo’s money” If the Leafs fail to make the playoffs and realistically without Roberts till January and taking a chance that Eddie will rebound it is a likely possibility, Amonte would be one of the guys to sholder alot the load in TO. If they played poorly the Fans would turn on him (see Larry Murphy)

Amonte can go to Boston a team that has a fair bit of talent scoring beyond three players and finished first last year, New York were there are TONS of players to sholder the load, etc.

There is a reason why players are avoiding TO, I think Leaf fans have to open their eyes and see it.

Sounds like we have a bitter Leaf fan.

    Fischer, No

    Suter, No

and you already gave Smith away for a 4th round draft pick.

Richardson and Lechance would have been the way to go but they seemed to have been scooped up by a team that had more sence that Patty.

  7. McCabe_24 says:

    I agree…McCabe is the man.

  8. Hockeyboys says:

I am going to be sick.

  9. Lint07 says:

Dosen’t mean they were good at it…

  10. DARTHJIM says:

LOOKS LIKE WE WILL SEE WHAT AMONTE IS REALLY ABOUT. IS HE JUST ANOTHER GREEDY ATHLETE OR DOES HE WANT TO BE “THE MAN”. IF HE SIGNS WITH TORONTO IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY. ACCORDING TO SOME OF THE REPORTS ON THIS SITE, HE IS NOT SURE IF HE WILL FIT IN WITH THE LEAFS. SO IF HE SIGNS WITH THEM IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR. IF HE GOES TO THE ISLANDERS, HE GOES KNOWING HE WILL GET FREE REIGN AND WILL BE “THE MAN” IF THE ISLANDERS CAN CONTEND FOR THE CUP, AND HE WILL BE THE TOAST OF NEW YORK, WERE HE IS REALLY WANTED. THE FANS ON THE ISLAND HAVE BEEN SENDING HE AGENT E-MAILS AND MAKING PHONE CALLS EXPLAINING HOW MUCH HE IS WANTED THERE. WE’LL SEE, PROBABLY IN THE NEXT 24 HOURS…

  11. Hockeyman93 says:

Actually, Yashin would still be “The Man” in Long Island even if Amonte did go to New York. And the Leafs need him too. They haven’t had a legit #1 winger for Sundin…ever. And now with Roberts out untill January, they need him even more. Plus, the Islanders don’t have the money to sign him after the lost so much last year.

  12. NewYorkRangers says:

    the website is wwww.fan590.com

  13. Rangersgonnaown says:

yeah, it would be awesome..but i dunno if itll happen…watch out…nedved and kloucek to STL for Thackuk to bolster up the left side…got it from TSN and Spectors….so…watchout ;]

  14. Rangersgonnaown says:

like the rangers and kasparaitis eh?

  15. amok says:

Is New York offering him less than Toronto? Just curious.. if they’re both offering similar amounts than there’s no way it can be all about the money if he signs with one over the other.

There will be nothing but problems if Amonte becomes “the man” in Long Island. Yashin will hold out during training camp, insisting that his contract be rewritten to say he is “the man.”

I wouldn’t say that the fans of Toronto want Amonte any less. Hell, if Amonte’s agent were talking to Brian Burke I’d be faxing the guy!

I hope he goes to Boston.

  16. Rangersgonnaown says:

like the rangers and kasparaitis eh?

  17. aaron says:

I believe they would tell you that since Yzerman was actually avoiding an attempted check by Pronger, its different. More accurately, Yzerman’s a classy, respected player, so he probably could have speared him in the balls and then stepped on his face with his skate, and they wouldn’t have said anything. 😛

BTW, I agree 100% on you (hate Leafs, no opinion on Cherry b/c I’ve never watched him myself, Roberts clean, Tucker…it happens). I would love for Amonte to sign w/ the Leafs b/c then the Wings won’t have to worry about him (all these big names can sign in the East…chances are another dark horse’ll come out again, so we don’t have to worry about all these bolstered teams…and I cannot believe I just agreed w/ Brian Burke).

  18. aaron says:

What do you think you have that could convince the Red Wings to trade Jiri Fischer? Nik Antropov?

  19. Modano_Fan says:

Ok i have to admitt, that 1999 Stanley Cup run by the Leafs was impressive…wait, you mean it wasnt the Leafs that won in 1999? Well if not them then who? ..hmmmm who could it have been…

  20. isles4life says:

Nice pipe dream.Keep smoking the crack dude.

  21. isles4life says:

It was never reported that Amonte is friends with McCabe(Mr.Corkscrew) or Green(gutless Puke). It just said that Amontes wife was talking on the phone with there wifes about the area.I love how well canadien media plays telephone with topics.

  22. isles4life says:

    Can anyone say ignorant?

  23. Modano_Fan says:

I say its pretty obvious Tony is all about the money. If it wasnt he would have been signed by now. Everytime a team has tried to sign him he backs off and tries to get a better deal somewhere else. So far,I’ve heard that he “nearly signed” with Chicago and Toronto in the last 3 nights, and that is has been “impressed” with the Stars. Honestly,I think if he ends up with the Leafs it will be because he screwed around too long and the other teams backed off. I mean no offense to Toronto fans, but a player like Amonte will only end up in Toronto for 1 or 2 reasons.

1- No one else wants him.

2- They payed more than anyone else.

  24. wholefnshow says:

    It was all Cujo……

And Guess who the Leafs switched Goalies with? The Stars. Hell the Leafs couldn’t even get the better Stars goalie (Turco is light years ahead of Belfour at this stage of their careers).

While you may talk about Toronto’s defense LAST year, this upcoming year, you will all see how great Mr.Cross truly is. Ha Ha HA, stupid Leaf fans. Goaltending is the best defense, you HAVE one of the worst.

  25. wholefnshow says:

For anyone thinking, that the money which was supposed to be used to attain Joseph, will and should be used to get Amonte is just ludacris. What did the Leafs offer Joseph, 9 million? What did they pay Belfour? 6.5 million. Do the math, that leaves 2.5 million, I don’t know where the Leafs will get the other 6+ million to sign Amonte.

Leaf fans are such idiots, while teams like the Habs try to set an example for other Canadian teams. The Leafs do the opposite and try to impersonate the Rangers. That is really pathetic, but whats funny, Leafs won’t even make the playoffs next year. With the worst goaltending combination known to man. Gee I wonder if anyother can have a worse duo of backstoppers then the Leafs. Hell, the Jackets even have Denis.

  26. wholefnshow says:

3- He has given up his shot to win a stanley cup as he has opted to battle with the Lightening to get the number draft pick.

  27. Modano_Fan says:

Well i guess there’s always that 2 Million or less that Domi was supposed to get,so if Amonte is willing to play in Toronto for about 4.5 Mill then i guess thats where he’ll end up. I really think the only way he’ll end up there is if he screwed around too much and everyone else lost interest in him,or if Toronto goes over budget and gets him anyway.

Toronto got Belfour as a desperation act to replace Cujo, which is think is stupid because Richter is better than Eddie and obviously came less expensive. Belfour’s best days are behind him,and Toronto will find that out sooner than later. How many 3rd period 3 goal leads against the Wild can Eddie blow before the Leafs realize they made a mistake?

Cujo leaving for LESS money was actually a very telling sign. He doesnt believe this team has what it takes to win,and he’s right. They make almost no smart free agent moves. Mogilny was a bust in my opinion. He has some few hot spots in the playoffs but he didnt live up to what they wanted to. Other than him, they sign older players like Corson and Roberts who honestly are not as talented as they are rough. The first round against the Islanders showed that. Theres not a player n that team better than Yashin, but the leafs and they’re bullsh*t style shuts down the talent.

To make a long story short, bullsh*t like that gets you past a round or two,but its not gonna win them the cup.

  28. SaltyNougat says:

Perhaps the losses of a few free agents frees up some cash (Cross, Valk, Dempsey, Domi, Barrasso, Schwab) also, it’s apparently been a big story in TO that they’ve raised ticket prices for the 5th year in a row… add to that the fact that the Leafs are one of the richest teams in the NHL… well you can see where I’m going with this.

As for the Leafs goaltending… Ed Belfour is not a bad goalie. He had a bad season last year, no doubt… but still, he is one of the better goalies of the past 10years. (I’m a fan of Swedish hockey, and I’m awfully excited to see young goalie Mikael Tellqvist get a shot in the NHL)

I agree with you, Leafs fans are idiots… but apparently so are you (and ‘fans’ like you). You can hate a team or hate a team’s fans… but don’t hate hockey. And hating hockey’s exactly what you’re doing when you insult a team or shoot down a fan’s ideas merely because they’re the Leafs (or the Rangers, or the Flyers… etc)

  29. kreatiiv says:

i think its the islanders fans that have been keeping tony considering. months ago when it was first revealed he wouldnt be staying in chicago, it was reported that close friends heard him talk about wanting to play on the island.

now all of the other big fish have been inked, and tony is finding out that with only three or four teams remaining with the budget to go near him at all, that the supply/demand ideal has switched on him… they have the power to say no to his requests… notice how a week ago the rumor was he was looking for 8-9…. then it became 8…. then it became 7.5…. then it became 7…. now the leaf rumor says they offered 6.4…. the teams are playing HIM now….

and the team he wanted to play for, the isles, who would pay whatever the final number is if its under 7, most likely….

that particular fan base has been faxing and phoning and leaving voicemails… has literally FLOODED his agents office with pleas and scenarios and fantasies about how tony would be on the island and how the community is and what a great place to live and how he would be the man…. supposedly both amonte and his agent have been very touched by the flow of fanaticism.

i think tony knows that the island is where he should be playing as one of the top men and wants to be a part of what is truly one of the great hockey centers…. i even include ranger fans in there because even though i hate em, they are as die hard as islander fans. new york is hockey. and with him on the team, the isles go from possible contender to definite contender…. with him up front, and worshipped by the community.

and thats the only thing that can win out over money….

besides… forget american players/canadian players…. what american family is gonna wanna relocate from chicago to toronto as opposed to new york?

his kids must be freaking about leaving the usa lol

How about you explain to me what was “ignorant” about my post?

First off, I asked if anyone knew what kind of money TO and NYI were offering. If you think I’m ignorant for not being up to date on the dollar signs then I apologize. Happy?

Second of all, you obviously either can’t take a joke or don’t know much about Yashin. This guy has a history of holding out and renegotiating. I have no problems with a guy holding out if he’s not getting what he feels is a fair contract *offer*, but holding out because one doesn’t think that the contract that he previously signed is no longer fair stinks. If you feel the contract is bad don’t sign the damned thing. Enough said.

Third, it’s obvious that Toronto fans would love to see Amonte on the Leafs. And who can blame them? I don’t like Toronto but if I were a Leafs fan I’d be excited at the chance to have a great player join my favourite team. Just like I would be if there was a chance he would come to the Canucks.

And lastly, I still hope he goes to Boston because he seems like he’d be a good fit there.

    So ignorant *that*…

  31. tml2k3 says:

How can you say “no smart free agent moves” when we sign players like Roberts, who was arguably the MVP of the team in playoffs, Mogilny, who was not a bust, scoring at times when the Leafs needed goals the most also in the playoffs, Corson, a great physical presence especially when playing on the same line as Tucker and Green which is line to be feared with next year. If you watched the Leafs in the playoffs you would have seen that 7 regulars were knocked out of the lineup due to injuries. Most teams would have given up and used that as an excuse for losing. The Leafs however did not resort to that. They came together, played like a team, and took the Sens to 7 games when they were on the brink of elimination playing with the “St. John’s Maple Leafs” as some would put it. Also, Yashin may be “better” than any player on the Leafs but he’s not a leader and the Leafs do not lack leaders which is a main reason why they bet the Sens in 7.

  32. pemulis says:

I don’t really care how Belfour does in Toronto, but I am amazed at how dim-witted some Dallas fans are.

First: Toronto didn’t “switch” goalies with Dallas, they signed a free agent.

Second: Cross is a free agent and the Leafs don’t want him back.

Third: There are plenty worse goalies to have than a crazy guy with a point to prove-dumped by his team, and replacing a coat-tail rider-if anything Belfour will at least be entertaining next season, which is more than you can say for the Stars.

  33. titans says:

I GOT BAD NEWS FOR EVERYONE! THE FOURTH PERIOD.COM IS REPORTING THE RANGERS ARE CLOSE TO SIGNING AMONTE!! THATS RIGHT THE RANGERS!!

  34. fishlikeme says:

Amonte a Ranger. Another free agent signing blown by the Leafs. Maybe the Leafs next signing should be a new GM, though the way their going they’d probably blow that one to.

  35. Modano_Fan says:

The Leafs really didnt make any smart free agent moves since Cujo. Mogilny may seem like he was a good pick up,but he didnt live up to what was expected. Believe me,i have ALOT of Leaf fan friends, and the belief was that Mogilny was all that they needed to send them to the cup. With the exception of some hot streaks in the playoffs,he really didnt live up to what was expected. Guys like Roberts and Corson are alright pick ups,but not the players that will send them to the finals. Roberts,Corson and Tucker are the same player and they have too much phycial players and not as much skill. The fact is that they can afford players like Corson and Roberts because they arn’t the star players other teams look for. When it comes to signing a big name star that can put them into the finals, the Leafs get cheap. And believe me,they HAVE the money to spend, they just don’t spend it.

And Yashin isnt a leader because on the Islanders he doesnt need to be. Peca is the leader,Yashin is the goal scorer.

The bottom line is that the Leafs will not this year or any time soon win a cup, because they seem to make DUMB decisions. When the home town boy who loves the team (Cujo) leaves the team for LESS Money because he knows he can’t win in Toronto, you really have to look at things.
