Rick Jackman Available

Leafs Defensman Rick Jackman wants to play in Toronto but after dressing in the first 16 games of the season he has only dressed in 13 of the teams past 39 games and he is growing frustraded.Terry Kochan of the Toronto Sun reports Jackman wants to play, and although he hasn’t formally requested a trade he has let the media know how he feels. “…If I am not going to play, then maybe it would be better if I went somewhere else.” Cemented as the Leafs seventh defensman with Kaberle, McCabe, Klee, Berg, Pilar, and Marchment all ahead of him, he can only find playing time when there are injuries

Jackman, Dallas’ first round pick (5th overall) in the 1996 draft is worst in leafs +/- at -11, and has 2 goals and 4 assists in 29 games. Its reported that at least six teams are interested in him including The Rangers, Capitols, Panthers, Blue Jackets, Hurricanes and Penguins.

He shows a lot of potentiel and could still end up becoming a solid NHL defensman within the next couple of years. He shows a bit of offense and lots of toughness and would be a good addition to any rebuilding/young team looking for a defensman. (That means any of the six teams up there except NY.)

He has tonnes of potential but he is not going to get ice-time on a contender. He has trouble when pressured with the puck and that is his biggest problem right now. He needs to play 20 minutes a game while knowing he won’t get pulled from the lineup because of mistakes, kind of like Mike Van Ryn in Florida this year. I would love for the leafs to keep him, but he will not see action unless serious injuries occur to the defense.

He is too good for the AHL though. He went down for a conditioning game and played over 30 minutes and was absolutely dominant.

Jackman can be a great player and I agree with him that he’s not getting that much playing time but he had chances to prove himself when some of the Leafs defencemen went down to injuries(Kaberle, Klee, McCabe).

It’s probably best for him to be traded or let go because he’s never going to get much playing time with the playoffs nearing and games meaning more. Plus, the Leafs have real good defensive prospects in Coliacovo, Hedin, White, Bell.

I say the Leafs should trade him and get whatever they can because he’s no good just sitting out.

  3. Bruins4771 says:

    Who wants him?

He has been passed around from team to team. Obviously there is some reason teams dont want him. I watched him when he played for Providence, and believe me he isn’t to good for the AHL. Why would any teams want a DEFENSEMAN who only has 6 pts (no offense) and is a minus 11 (no defense). Doesnt sound like he has much potential to me. I wanna know why the media even talks to this guy……

  4. LondonK says:

Tossed around from team to team????

He spent 9 games in Providence during his short stay in Boston and had a short time in Dallas. He hasn’t had the opportunity to develop like other defenseman because of his addiction difficulties. He needs time to play. If you watched his 3 games in the AHL this year you would know that he is too good for the AHL. Not based on 9 games played 3 years ago. That is like saying you should sign Jim Carrey to an NHL contract as your #1 goalie because he has a Vezina.

Your analysis was of a player 3 years ago who was in his early 20’s as a defenseman. Good defenseman develop around the age of 26 without outside complications, Jackman didn’t have that luxury.

I’ve seen him play. He sucks. He makes Berg look good (an amazing feat). He is just so prone to turnovers… it would make me sick to watch him play if I was a leafs fan.

  6. bruinexpert says:

wow..i didn’t realize that the word ‘potential’ meant that he should have good number right now

  7. Leaf_Expert says:

    2 things.

a)This news is about 3weeks old.

b)DG’s been gone for who knows how long. And he posts a trade rumor on a guy who should be considered less then Cory Cross.

    Whats going on with DG?

  8. flyersfan10897 says:

No nearly 26 year old should have “potential.” if hes already that old, and still isnt a regular, he never will be. Come on, he couldnt crack the Leafs lineup last year with Berg and Lumme? If Dallas didnt want him, and Boston didnt want him, and hes not playing for the Leafs, i highly doubt hes a hot commodity around the NHL.

  9. Tweek says:

dont get on berg, he’s having a steady year this year, sure he’s not great but he’s a solid #5 d man, as for jackman i cant see anybody trading for him. ive forgetten all about him so he’s just waiver material

  10. dkball7 says:

I went to a Devs-Leafs game earlier this year and Berg suprised me. He was very solid, and seemed to throw his body around, not to mention he was very mobile in the contest. He is having a good year, but he should only be considered a very good 6th defenseman.

  11. LondonK says:

He hasn’t had a 26 year old’s opportunity in the NHL. He has only had a few years with no full seasons.

No he isn’t a hot commodity with top teams, but he is for lesser teams who have the room, and more importantly, time to develop him. Boston never even had him technically. He was around for 1 season and they left him. That really doesn’t give much of an opportunity for a guy who has never been given development time.

In Dallas he wasn’t a fit at the time. They had a good defense already and they didn’t have time to give him devlopment time, they were trying to win a cup.

With the leafs it is the same thing. They don’t have the time to develop Jackman when they are in a hunt for a cup.

He alone won’t get the leafs a lot, but make no mistake he has potential. He will be a player that is packaged in a deal for an established player if a deal is made.

  12. flyersfan10897 says:

So they didnt have the time to develop jackson, and instead played AHL quality defenseman last year? There is a reason he hasnt had the same opportunities, its because he isnt as good as he was supposed to be. Hes going to have to be packaged with some very good players to get something worthwhile in return.

  13. Bruins4771 says:

He has been on three teams in 4 years. And if he gets his way, he will be on four. He has 11 pts in 111 games. And overall -29. This guy obviously cant hack it in the NHL. He has gotten many opportunities in different situations to break in, and has choked. He was on a bruins team that needed defensive help. I dont even see potential.

  14. Bruins4771 says:

He has no potential…his numbers dont warrant a kid of potential…I saw a him play just 2 years ago for boston…he sucked..im no expert but if three teams have no use for you I dont think your POTENTIAL is too great

  15. Bruins4771 says:

Ive seen guys like Terry Virtue dominate the ahl and never make the NHL…….

  16. mikster says:

Doing a perfect part time job.

  17. BarryMelrosesMullet says:

You should keep your mouth shut LE!

  18. bruinexpert says:

i’m not saying he’s good..i’m just saying your justification for potential seemed to be in form of current points which i wouldn’t use as a determinant of potential…that’s all

  19. gr8haluschak says:

Is that not like saying Scott Ferguson (or however the hell it is spelled, I don’t care) is available from the Oilers.

  20. swedishvoice says:

What trade news… Thats a real minor, I mean the Leafs will be luckey to get a 7th pic for Jackman, but they will probably get nothing at all.

If the leafs wants him gone they have to put him on waiver.

  21. big_booty says:

I’m sick and tired of hearing about Leafs “prospects” who have tons of “potential” but no place to play.

If these stiffs were anywhere near NHL-ready they’d be playing full-time by now.

Potential and a bottle of Stoli will get you drunk.

  22. afanofthelakings says:

Montreal’s Karl Dykhuis is also available, but who cares ??? LOL

  23. dlo44 says:

    Jackman for Chris Pronger

  24. mojo19 says:

Berg is playing like a fine 4th or 5th D-man this year. Nothing spectacular, but no real mistakes.

  25. mojo19 says:

I said he has potential to be a solid NHL defensman, lots of guys don’t really make it until they are 27-30.

  26. mojo19 says:

i never said tons of potential. I said he could potentialy be a solid NHL defensman, this is not a lie. And if you don’t like reading about minor trade news then don’t read the articles with Jackman-esk names in the title.

  27. greatlife15 says:

He’s a great young offense-minded defenseman but I don’t think that that is what the Leafs are looking for. Jackman will be a solid defender in a couple of years but not by playing the “7th man” role for the Leafs, I wonder where and who he’ll be traded for…
