Rico's Rant – Habs Fans!

(The opinions expressed in the following article are those solely of the provider and do not in anyway reflect those of the htr.com staff – viewer discretion is advised)

First and foremost – I am a Habs fan, I was born one, I will die one, you cut me I bleed bleu, blanc et rouge – I still search Youtube to find games from the 93 Stanley Cup final to see Patrick Roy wink at Sandstrom and so on!

But Habs fans in general these days are irritating me beyond all end – you act like we’re still stuck in the Rejean Houle era and that there is no where to go but up..last time I looked we’re sitting 3rd in the East with points behind a couple of REALLY good teams and ahead of a few REALLY good teams – this season and seeing stupid comments like “we need to be sellers this year” baffle the living hell out of me.

First and foremost – lay off the Koivu attacks – I’m not gonna drag through the past and that he’s faced alot of adversity while in Montreal and kicked it all away – this is the guy who is the face of our Franchise and he’s starting to face the same wrath of shit that Zednik had to go through while he was here – the mentality of him taking bad penalties and not scoring a lot of points is simply stupid – this is the only leader on this team who is capable of BEING the Captain RIGHT NOW – I know that Higgins is golden, Komisarek is great, and Kovalev is rocking right now – but Koivu is our guy and we need to rally behind him as much as we can – come playoff time and he’s having a great playoff it’ll be awesome to hear everyone jump on the Koivu bandwagon again.

The comment that turned me sour was this – “How can we keep Koivu as our captain..he’s garbage and has the same amount of points as Mark Streit!” with that mentality during their careers these guys shouldn’t have been the captain – Mark Messier, Kirk Muller, Scott Stevens, Joe Sakic, Steve Yzerman, Rod Langway, Ron Francis, Lanny McDonald, Trevor Linden, Brenden Morrow, Chris Chelios and countless other GOOD leaders shouldn’t have been the Captain..plain and simple give it up – Koivu is spirited and leads his troops as well as any other Captain in the NHL – and whether any of us like it or not if the C were to be transfered tomorrow it should be on Markov.

Our players and prospects have the same value as any other player and prospects in the league – Carey Price is a solid prospect and is going to be a damned Good player in this league for years to come – but let’s not put a Ken Dryden or Patrick Roy tag on him just yet – after all this is the kid that got booed back to Hamilton – which is utterly ridiculous as well, he’s a kid and he’s going to be a damned good Goalie in this league for years to come but to say things like “Ok now that Price has had a few solid games it’s time to trade Huet for St. Louis”…yeah the market for Goalies this year has been amazing..am I the only one who remembers Anaheim had to waive Bryzgalov to get him some playing time in another NHL market?

People who live in glass houses should never throw stones – remember last year where every Leafs deal that was going to be made included Antropov and a 1st round pick? Well guess what guys last year’s Antropov is this years Ryder – I cringe everytime I see things like “perennial 30 goal scorer” or “solid two way performer” to describe Ryder – honestly right now if the Habs were to try and send Ryder to Hamilton I think he’d clear waivers – so I don’t see how we’re going to package a UFA, a prospect and a pick to Tampa for Lecavalier, unless Feaster really wants to take a job on Satellite Hot Stove that isn’t gonna happen.

Back to this years Goalie market – Halak isn’t the spectacular netminder most of us are making him out to be – I won’t say that he’s not solid but a 10-6 career in the NHL doesn’t necessarily mean he’s the next Tomas Vokoun guys..does anyone else remember a guy named Petr Pruschek? what about Jani Hurme…ask any Sens fan and they’ll tell you that he was the best thing to come out of Ottawa since the mint printed a 1000 dollar bill..meanwhile last time I looked neither one were in the NHL anymore.

Last but not least – Be realistic in your expectations for this team – we’re in a good stage right now – but honestly we have a team that could win two rounds in the playoffs right now – we’re like the 94 New Jersey Devils..we’re about one year away from really making some serious noise so keep yourself strapped in and enjoy the ride – just keep idiotic comments to yourself, it’s stupid remarks like the above that make us GOOD Hockey fans who love the Habs fall into the group of “Stupid Canadiens fans”.
