Ryan Malone signs 7 year deal with Tampa Bay!

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed Ryan Malone to a 7 year $31.5 million dollar contract.According to TSN Malone will earn between 7 and 8 million dollars in each of the first two years of this deal. The cap hit on Malone will be $4.5 million for each of the next 7 years, which is what he was expected to fetch on the open market. Could be a high price to pay for a player who is coming off his best season offensively at only 51 points, including 11 power play goals with the stacked Pittsburgh Penguins.

Too much money and too long a contract for a guy who's numbers had to have been padded by playing on the Pens last year.  Not quite as bad as the deal the Leafs gave Blake but only because Malone is younger.

Ya, I knew someone would overpay for Ryan Malone. Way too much for a 2nd line support winger (who gets decked a lot.

But I do like that Tampa is making some noise. Could have lines like this:

    Prospal – Vinny – St.Louis
J.Jokinen – Stamkos – Rolston (traded for Brian Rolston's rights today)
    Roberts – Halpern – Ouellette
    Tanarsky – ????? – Ward

Not bad looking forwards. This team could make the playoffs if Mike Smith plays well enough in goal. Roberts was signed for about $2 million. My guess is 39 year old captain Tim Taylor retires and the C goes to Vinny, or Gary Roberts.

Retard teams !@#! ~V!$~ %~!!!! … totally ruining the market wat a joke

Where does Malone fit in your lineup??????

  5. intelligentscorpio says:

There is no way Malone is worth 7-8 mil front loaded contract. Where is the incentive to play hard and compete after the first two years????

  6. mojo19 says:

    lol, oh wow

  7. WE-DeusEx says:

    LMAO, i know right?

  8. mojo19 says:

    can't believe I forgot that guy…….

Okay, how about something like this:

    Prospal – Vinny – St.Louis
    Rolston – Stamkos – Malone
    Roberts – Halpern – Jokinen
    Ward – Tanarsky – Oullette

could be pretty good but they need a big year from Dan Boyle and other d-men not to mention Mike Smith

  9. mojo19 says:

They also hired his father as a scout. And Pittsburgh gets a 3rd rounder since he signed before July 1st.

On the surface this looks terrible, but I think Tampa sees this year as a huge oppurtunity for them.  Everyone else in their division is getting weaker this offseason (except potentially Washington).  Carolina has lost two veteran D-man and will have to give up on Erik Cole to fill a defensive void.  Florida has lost their captain, and top goal scorer in Olli Jokinen, and Jay Bouwmeester may not be far behind.  Atlanta is just stuck being shit, as Kovalchuk grows increasingly frustrated with the lack of help he gets.  So really, if they pull this off they could slaughter those 3 teams in the season series all year round, and hold their own against AO and the Caps.  They've pretty much guaranteed themselves a playoff spot, and pulled away from the other teams in their division.  For once the 3rd seed might actually be statistically close to being 3rd.  Yea Malone is way overpaid, but I like that they're making a splash.

  11. mojo19 says:

Good point. That division might feature 4 of the games best in Lecavalier, Ovechkin, Staal, and Kovalchuk, but it is the league's worst division overall.

I don't think there will be any worries about the last 5 years.  Malone will probably be run out of Tampa by February of 09 when he's not playing with Malkin.  Stamkos is definitely NOT Malkin, not even close.  Shero knew Malone wasn't worth any more than 3 Mil, and he didn't even bother to waste his time with a deal.  Tampa Bay will live to regret this deal until the day it gives up its franchise, which won't be very many years now.  Roberts will be lucky to play 25 games.  The only smart thing they did was front load the contract and not bury the team for years to come.

  13. Kramer says:

Malone is lactose intolerant, I could tell.

  14. rc21pa says:

Can't blame Tampa for attaacking quick. They did overpay but they did address some of their weakness.  All they need is a goalie and they coukd be a force to deal with.  Also happy that malone and roberts at least gave us a gift by giving the Pens a extra pick for next year.  The pick won't be as good as the Pens picks but still nice to have.

Yes I'm stating it right now the Pens will be lucky to even make the playoffs this year.

  15. mojo19 says:

Mike Smith could be the surprise of the NHL this year. (Or one of the surprises). He's a really good goalie. But I do think it would be wise to go after a veteran back up to help him out. (Olaf Kolzig maybe?)

  17. WE-DeusEx says:

buddy, do u know what ur talking about? Tampa finished last with all that firepower… where the hell do you get the idea that adding malone and roberts to the lineup will help them? Malone played with malkin, did u forget? most of his points came when malkin was on fire while crosby was out with an injury. tamba = same team with additional grit = no playoffs **so far**

  18. mojo19 says:

Keep in mind their number one problem was goaltending, so the question becomes "is Mike Smith a legit starter?" Which I think he is, and he's also a huge upgrade over Holmqvist and Denis.

Also Brad Richards had the worst +/- in the league last year with Tampa and I think role players like Jokinen and Halpern will help out this team a lot. Richards best strength was working the point on the PP but they don't need that, they need reliable strong players, not guys like Richards earning just under $8 mil a year, he makes Malone look somewhat affordable.

  19. nosnow_here says:

Hey?  Jokinen isn't on your team anymore.  Pick up a newspaper once in awhile.

  20. cam7777 says:

He is talking about Jussi Jokinen, who was traded to Tampa from Dallas.  He is still on the team until the end of next season when he becomes a restricted free agent.  .

  21. flyersdan says:

Last I checked the Jokinen you are talking about (ollie) was never on this team.  There is more than one city in Florida.  Read that newspaper you picked up before you go blasting people who know more than you.

  22. oilcountry88 says:

WOW is this gonna come to bit Tampa in the ass!The only reason Malone put up a few numbers was because of guys like Crosby and Malkin

  23. nosnow_here says:

Last time I checked there actually weren't any teams in Florida ass wipe.

  24. BruMagnus says:

The traitor made a wise personal move because he wouldn't have gotten near as much with the Pens. Overpaid for sure, but luckily for him he'll be mooching off yet another elite player in Lecavalier likely on the top line, so his stats won't be brutal. Still, overpaid and a risky signing.

or does Prospal make that top line and does Malone get 40 points without a real center to set him up?

  25. mojo19 says:

Pick up a newspaper Jokinen is on Tampa Bay. Also he's the best shootout player in the NHL which could be worth as much as 5 or 6 points in the standings too.

  26. mojo19 says:

Oh I'm sure he'll get a shot with Lecavalier, but Prospal is a better player then Malone, and they'll end up moving him back up there.

  27. BruMagnus says:

As a Pens fan you certainly aren't very knowledgeable.

The Pens will likely win the Atlantic again and possibly come 1st in the Conference.

Crosby will be healthy ALL year and win, yet again, the Art Ross.
Malkin will play 82 games again and pass 100 points again, seeing as he will play, with Sid, nearly the full 2 minutes on the PP and see some PK time at last.

The Pens will sign a filler, like Brian Rolston or a Kristian Huselius, and then trade for Rick Nash at the deadline.

It's all good. The Pens have 2 of 3 the best players in the NHL and will make the playoffs just fine.

  28. BruMagnus says:

    Eric Christensen is better.

  29. BruMagnus says:

Agreed, and Malone will make more! lol
I kept saying that Philly made a GREAT, quiet, acquisition and should have tried harder to re-sign him. He's a good player in his own right.

  30. mojo19 says:

Ya that comment was crazy. The Pens will win their division, or if they suffer injuries and a couple guys have bad seasons, they'll still be good enough to finish 5th in the East or higher.

2 of the 3 best players Bru? I guess you mean Sid and Gino, Sid okay, Gino…. I don't know. He's really gotta bring it again this year to convince me and be more dominant in the playoffs.

Zetterberg and Lidstrom are both better! Sorry that's just how I see it. A guy who wins the Norris every year and a guy who puts up over 90 pts and is a Selke calibre player, and wins the Conn Smythe, kind of hard to argue.

  31. mojo19 says:

Okay fine, its debateable, but my point still stands, Jokinen is clearly a threat in shootouts.

  32. mojo19 says:

I thought he was their best player against Washington in the 1st round, even ahead of Briere or Timonen.

Big Vaclav Prospal fan here. Not a big Malone fan (sometimes he gets decked really hard). But Bru you might remember me saying all along that Malone would jet and earn up around $4-5 million per season. HONK HONK! That's 2 pts for Mojo
