Sabres and Jackets to make a trade?

The Buffalo Sports News is reporting that the Sabres could be working on a deal with the Blue Jackets.

It is reported that the Sabres are actively trying to move Tim Connoly and that the Blue Jackets could show interest in Connoly to play with Rick Nash. It is reported that the “Jackets have been clamoring for a center of Connolly’s ilk.”

The player who would head back to the Sabres in this deal would be Rostislav Klesla howeer it is also hoped that “Columbus also would take winger Maxim Afinogenov for cosmetics, making it look like a heist for the Jackets even if the Sabres knew better?” In this case it appears that eh Sabres would love to dump Afinogenov and his contract.

this is an even trade, and i like it. clb gets a top line center and "scoring" winger. buf gets a solid d man.

Well, let me see. First of all it has been reported that the Sabres have made a contract offer to Connolly in a final effort to avoid losing him. If he does not sign I would expect Darcy Regier to field some offers for the playmaker since the Sabres can't afford to lose him for nothing.

Columbus would be a possible trading partner, but I would prefer Raffi Torres over Klesla, or if we must take a defenseman I want Tolleffsen. Sure Tolleffsen takes dumb penalties, and racks up a ton of PIMs in general, but he's huge and hits people often. He's a Norwegian with guts and isn't afraid to drop the gloves. Torres brings some muscle to the lineup and he can score some goals. The Sabres are too soft, and fans would fall in love with him very quickly if he brings that and puts in a few goals.

Klesla has not been able to put it together in Columbus and maybe he does just need a change of scenery, but there are things about him that put me off. First of all he's supposed to be an offensive defenseman, but he's been unable to produce much offense in recent years. For another thing, Hitch***** is a defensive minded coach, and he is the only guy still on that team that hasn't bought into the system. So we'd have an offensive defenseman who doesn't score pts and can't play defense? No thanks.

Throwing Afinogenov into the deal would be just that, throwing him in. He's dropped off considerably and could use a change of scenery. The Sabres would be happy to get his $3 million off the books, even just for the remainder of the season. He's a pending UFA that isn't likely to get many offers across the league this summer, everyone believes he will head back to Russia. At very least if Max were sent with Connolly for Torres, Tolleffsen, or Klesla the Sabres would have freed up some cap space for another deal.
