Sabres-Panthers Rumour

The Hockey News’ Adam Proteau is reporting a possible trade involving the Panthers and Sabres that would see Biron going to the Panthers in exchange for Belfour and Roberts.According to Proteau, this trade is great for both sides as Florida gets a dependable goalie and Buffalo gets to veteran UFAs to help in their playoff push.  As a bonus, Proteau points out that it would also block rival Senators and Maple Leafs from aquiring Roberts for themselves

As a Sens fan, this trade would really, really tick me off as it is the best Roberts rumour I have heard so far… I could see this one going down.

sounds interesting, and it would be interesting to see both Roberts and Belfour in Sabres uniforms, especially if the Leafs get the 8th spot and face them in the first round.

I think it would be a steal for Florida, but only if they were able to resign Biron, as I think he is an UFA at season's end.

Whatever the case may be, I would much rather see Roberts in a Sabres uniform than a Sens.  Don't really care about Belfour as he is FINISHED!

While I respect Proteau and the majority of his work, this report doesn't make any sense.

Biron is a great asset for the Sabres to have right now.  Keeping him as insurance isn't out of the realm of possibility, but his trade value will only get higher as the deadline looms.

Darcy Reiger is an astute hockey man and I would assume he knows that there is more of a market out there for Biron than Belfour and Roberts.  Belfour would only pick splinters out of his ass, and Roberts stands about as much chance of getting hurt as he does scoring goals.

Giving up on a player like Biron – who is at or approaching his prime – for two over-the-hill shadows of their former selves just isn't smart.  If this deal happens I will be shocked.  Biron could get you so much more on the trade market.

  3. papichulo71 says:

Biron will be moved but he will be much more valuable at the entry draft than at the trade deadline.

Buffalo can't afford to sign him as a backup, Regier will only move him to the West, all contenders in the West currently have adequate goaltending.

  4. wingsfan13 says:

not gonna happen.  buffalo is not in need of forward depth really.

  5. Shawn84 says:

makes perfect sense, what's the next best thing than going back to toronto to be close to his daughter. Go to buffalo where you are near T.O and you actually go to a team that will accomplish something in the playoffs!! Way better than going back to toronto.

Unless I am missing something this is would rank as the dumbest trade ever. If Florida does this Martin should be shot. They are giving away 2 playoff tested, cup winning veterans for an UFA. Please tell me I am missing something and Jacques has not lost his last few marbles.

Taking into consideration that if the sabres want to resign drury and briere, which they will most likely try, they can't aquire any big names with contracts beyond the season.  Fans in Buffalo will not take very well to getting parts for the future, as the future is now for the Sabres.  Belfour is as good an insurance as Biron and Roberts adds something the Sabres don't have.  What do you think the Sabres will trade Biron for?

  8. RagingRon says:

Someone said that the Sabres had alot of depth at forward. They do. When they're healthy…In that last few weeks they've lost Gaustad (Season), Afinogenov (4-6 weeks) and Kotalik (4 weeks). They definately have to make a move but I don't think Roberts is the deal to make.
I don't know why everyone trips out on Roberts. Geez, the guy is finished for crying out loud.Good player but that was a long time ago. Get over it. So is Belfour…They'd be much better served going after hot Guerin or Tkachuk who can at least pop one is regularly. They have enough grinders. If they do trade Biron, I'd send him and a pick to Boston for Tim Thomas and Marco Sturm. To me that makes more sense.

  9. mikster says:

If Keenan was still GM, he’d do it. He loves trading for players who become UFAs.

I want the Panthers to get Biron for next season, but Roberts and Belfour would fetch them good youth and draft picks would be acceptable too. They have enough forwards to use (they have all season when Olesz was injured, Joey retired, Roberts injured, Bertuzzi out, Stumpel injured, Peltonen injured).

Auld would benefit to start the rest of the season; and maybe Craig Anderson, who has been good in the AHL, may get a chance.

i heard roberts wants to be traded to Anaheim or L.A. to be closer to his sister Julia Roberts while she films the new oceans 11 movie

    just a rumor…dont slam me

  11. bleedingblu says:

Yah I heard this rumor too….. the movie is Oceans 13. Hey maybe Gary is playing the 13th thief.
In other rumors, I heard Britney Spears is playing Lex Luther in the next Superman movie.

    …just a rumor. Don’t slam me.

  12. TMLFNATK says:

Actually there could be something to this. Spectors is reporting that Florida has just called up a goalie from their farm team and there is no report that either Belfour or Auld is hurt. Could mean there is a trade in the works.

  13. bleedingblu says:

I think this may happen. I’m hearing this rumor everywhere.

  14. papichulo71 says:

The rumor is Belfour to either Minnesota or Detroit for a 2nd rounder.

This will probably set Joseph's value, and from what I'm hearing is to Pittsburgh.

  15. TheFish12 says:

Except for the fact that they are providing a division rival with a stellar goalie…

  16. Connolly4mvp says:

    I heard Marty to Tampa.

  17. BieksaForMVP says:

No one will take him near draft time, because he might not even play a game with that team…

  18. BieksaForMVP says:

Why would Boston want a UFA who's not that good who you couldn't get just for Thomas (because Brron will be a UFA).

  19. BieksaForMVP says:

Oh that's why she shaved her head lol.

  20. SabresFan220 says:

You can hear this rumor as much as you like, it won't happen unless the Sabres immediately make another trade to cut more cap room. Biron's salary is less than Roberts alone, never mind adding in Belfour's to Buffalo. The Sabres have no cap space outside of Paul Gaustad's salary now available since he's out for the year. Even using up the space provided by Gaustad isn't enough, Belfour makes more than he does. So say what you will, this trade will not likely happen. I'm fine with that too, because I don't Roberts at the price we'd be paying, but I would be ok with Belfour as Miller's backup for the playoffs (although I'd still rather get Mike Dunham who is younger and cheaper).

If you're talking Sabres trades people keep saying they're inching towards Kevyn Adams in a Sabres uniform. That's a move I like.

  21. papichulo71 says:

Well of course he'll be signed/agreed to a deal similar to the Havlat trade last year.

  22. davey says:

Ahem……Darcy has never been one to make a stupid deal, in fact his deals have been mostly (well) downright steals come trade deadlines. (see Dumont and Gilmour for Grosek and/or Chris Gratton for Danny Briere). Despite his UFA status, the day Belfour or Roberts end up in sabres jerseys in exchange for a solid insurance policy such as that which Biron provides is probably the day hell freezes over. I saw this come from Ecklund's blog, the same person who speculated that the sabres were after Brian Berard last week. Lets leave the unrealistic speculation to him. The sabres have just about enough cap room (assuming Connolly isn't back before playoff time, saving them 3mil in cap room) to afford each of these washed up has beens; I think Darcy's track record has proven there are better ways to spend a teams money and given the sabres post season chances the move will be in the best interest in the team rather than throwing away a great shot at the cup at players only the leafs and panthers were willing to sign in the past 3 seasons.

  23. davey says:

playoff tested? Cup winning? Maybe in the past. The way I see it the sabres would be on the side that deserves to be shot. A somewhat young UFA who can still be re-signed as Florida's starter before stanley cup gets handed out in exchange for two washed up players who haven't offered anything to any team they've played for since the turn of the century. If I were you, I'd count your blessings if this trade happens, but it wont.

  24. davey says:

The sens and leafs can have both of them. In fact the leafs did, so they won't want them again.
