you know what would be better? the Sens, Leafs, Habs and Rangers each playing each other on the Rideau Canal… that would be awesome

This is all over the sports radio and such around here in Buffalo.

Current rumors have the game taking place at Ralph Wilson Stadium (the Buffalo Bills stadium). http://www.wgr550.com/sabres/fullstory.php?id=2504

The University of Buffalo has also apparently offered it's football stadium for use if The Bills/Ralph Wilson Stadium decline.

Are we sure this is official yet? ESPN is known for their blunders about hockey. I actually heard them say the other night that the Pens had signed 21 year old Sidney Crosby. The kid’s 20th birthday is next month.

At any rate, I checked the Pens site and all their local media all that they say is that the game is tentative. In short, the Pens told the NHL that they would have been glad to participate as only the visiting team in an outdoor game (the NHL wanted them to host, but the Pens did not feel they were ready to take care of all the arrangements). Then the NHL asked the Sabres if they could host, but they are still trying to work out the details. In the morning Pittsburgh media, they relayed that the game might be played in the Ralph Wilson Stadim, which seats 70,000+, and the NHL is planning on branding the event as the “Ice Bowl.”

But again, last I have heard is that nothing is finalized yet.

WHO HERE FROM CANADA WOULD ACTUALLY DRIVE THERE TO WATCH THAT GAME?

I would…im from Toronto and if its there, im definetly going!

  9. FlamingHomer says:

What a great idea. I can't believe no one thought of doing this sooner.

  10. habswinthecup-again says:

It would not be smart to play this game on Jan. 1st, because the States have about 50 Bowl games happening that day and there is no way that the NHL would attract much of an audience with that happening. Please somebody with intelligence within the NHL stepup and change the date because it is a smart idea (look at Mon. and Edm.) but the date has to be changed.

  11. habswinthecup-again says:

You 2 have been drinking way too much! Lol

  12. Glucker says:

lol hey, it was your compatriot's idea… although it would be AWESOME to see XD

  13. gronk says:

no, if you want a real laugh go to espn. com and type in who's now and watch KEYSHAWN JOHNSON question how great crosby is.  hahaha enough said

  14. papichulo71 says:

I think this is an awesome idea.  I think it is a fair prediction that both these teams will be at the top of their divisions at the time; plus they are the most enjoyable teams to watch in the East.

I game like this would benefit the NHL greatly.  Get people talking hockey again.

Considering some tickets to the Heritage Classic were going for $400 before the temp. dropped I would definitely fly down if the ticket prices weren't ridiculous.

  15. Habroller says:

    You're joking, right?

Sacrcasm can sometimes be hard to detect from a handful of uncontextualized words.

  16. UWSensFan says:

While I agree that using the Rideau would be a historic first, it would be near impossible to set up bleachers/seating to have attendance even closely compare to Scotiabank Place, so it'd never happen.

The NHL got it right the first time (Heritage Classic game) when they used a football stadium for this, and they've got the ability to do it again in Ottawa.  As for opponents that would draw crowds, add Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Washington, and Philly to that list in terms of teams that would sell 40,000+ tickets for a single game!

  17. FlamingHomer says:

Sarcasm is correct. We need to have different coloured text to portray our various emotions. Who can I talk to about that?
Back to the topic- As much as I enjoy taking jabs at my Northern counterparts, any future outdoor game will just be second best. The Edmonton/Montreal game of a few years ago will not be topped.
Any others will just be a money grab.

  18. habsalicious says:

Good idea. You know, I might actually consider it if I can get some tickets beforehand. Not too far from Montreal. Would have liked to see the Edmonton- Habs game two years ago.

  19. habsalicious says:

People from MOntreal, Ottawa and Toronto will drive there and fill the stands.

  20. baltic_thunder says:

Nice move Mr. Bettman and the NHL – pick a day like New Year's Day to help sell the game south of the border. Do you seriously think anyone's going switch off college football? At least the Canadian audience will be salivating. Man, oh man.

  21. baltic_thunder says:

Someone buy Mr. Bettman a toque before he does irrepairable damage.

  22. Avim86 says:

They did they when it was Habs vs Oilers it was a great game and theo was in nets ahh the good old days where theo didn't choke.
