Salary Cap and your team

I have read many articles and seen many proposals on a salary cap. But I ask you, if you had 30 or 40 Mil to spend what would your team look like?Avalanche.

One of the harder teams to do by the by.

30 Million Dollar Cap –

David Aebischer – $450,000 US

Brett Clark – $450,000 US

Greg De Vries – $1,375,000 US

Chris Drury – $2,500,000 US

Adam Foote – $4,200,000 US

Riku Hahl – $415,000 US

Milan Hejduk – $2,700,000 US

Dan Hinote – $600,000 US

Brad Larsen – $423,500 US

Eric Messier – $700,000 US

Bryan Muir – $500,000 US

Vaclav Nedorost – $975,000 US

Scott Parker – $574,750 US

Steve Reinprecht – $475,000 US

Phillipe Sauve – $450,000 US (EST)

Joe Sakic – $9,832,727 US

Martin Skoula – $975,000 US

Radim Vrbata – $400,000 US

Stephen Yelle – $1,200,000 US

Total – $29,195,977

Lines.

Nedorost-Sakic-Hejduk

Reinprecht-Drury-Vrbata

Larsen-Yelle-Messier

Hinote-Hahl-Parker

Defense.

Foote-Skoula

De Vries-Muir

Clark-Messier (shifted back to D)

Goaltending.

Aebischer

Sauve

Odd Men Out-

Rob Blake, Peter Forsberg *tear drop falls from his eye*, Mike Keane, Patrick Roy

Reasoning- Blake is more expandable because of his salary. Forsberg is worth every penny of his salary but as is Sakic. Came to one or the other and Sakic is the Captain for a reason. Keane is nearing hte end of his carear. Roy age there as well.

40 Million Cap Room –

David Aebischer – $450,000 US

Brett Clark – $450,000 US

Greg De Vries – $1,375,000 US

Chris Drury – $2,500,000 US

Adam Foote – $4,200,000 US

Peter Forsberg – $11,000,000 US

Riku Hahl – $415,000 US

Milan Hejduk – $2,700,000 US

Dan Hinote – $600,000 US

Brad Larsen – $423,500 US

Stephen Yelle – $1,200,000 US

Total – $39,621,227

Lines.

Foote-Skoula

De Vries-Muir

Clark-Messier (shifted back to D)

Goaltending.

Aebischer

Sauve

Odd Men Out.

Rob Blake, Mike Keane, Scott Parker, Patrick Roy

Reasoning – Blake is good ofensively but for half the money Foote is the better pickup. Keane is 35 and really not that great a PK player or a scorer, Parker does little but fight, Roy is 36…Hard to say goodbye, but gotta draw the line somewhere.

Well let’s see how many can budget well.

Hey, i think you missed Forsberg on the $40 million dollar team for the lines. Tell me if there are any changes to be made so i can make the changes. I liked this article though.

I have to see the exact salaries for the Rangers. I can’t find any site that has the current salaries for this season for all the players.

  2. Glen says:

The Rangers would be full of Minor league players. They wouldn’t be able to afford 2 full lines.

  3. DaAvs says:

You’re right for 40 Mil cap I would set my lines as…

    Lines.

    Nedorost-Sakic-Hejduk

    Forsberg-Drury-Reinprecht

    Larsen-Yelle-Messier

    Hinote-Hahl-Vrbata

    Defense.

    Foote-Skoula

    De Vries-Muir

    Clark-Messier (shifted back to D)

Forgot one of the odd men out was Tanguay as well (rumor in Colorado paper is Tanguay and Skoula might hold out).

I got the salaries for mine from nhlpa.com they have updated for the most part, unless they are unrestricted or restricted free agents.

  4. garry1221 says:

interesting…. still don’t know why everyone’s setting the salary cap so damn low….. i think 50 mill. is pretty low for what could be set myself, but lemme see:

    $30,000,000

    Sean Avery – 400,000

    Mathieu Dandenault – 1,262,000

    Pavel Datsyuk – 700,000

    Boyd Devereaux – 1,400,000

    Kris Draper – 1,150,000

    Sergei Fedorov – 2,000,000

    Tomas Holmstrom – 1,300,000

    Maxim Kuznetsov – 475,000

    Igor Larionov – 1,150,000

    Manny Legace – 800,000

    Kirk Maltby – 1,100,000

    Brendan Shanahan – 7,000,000

    Jason Williams – 375,000

    Henrik Zetterberg – 825,000

    Niklas Lidstrom – 10,000,000

    Jiri Fischer – est. 1,200,000

    Shanny – Feds – Williams

    Devereaux – Datsyuk – Draper

    Zetterberg – Larionov – Holmstrom

    Maltby – Avery – Drapes?

    Lids – Fischer

    Dande – Kuznetsov

    Legace

    odd men out: Yzerman(injury and age) Robitaille(age), Chelly(age), Hully(age),

Mac(hasn’t signed yet), Wallin(hasn’t signed yet), Cujo (age and money)

………..see this is why i say 30,000,000 is too low for the cap, can’t even figure out good lines, granted for the wings this would be no problem as players would defer salary to keep and get players on the roster, but still way too low….d’oh after going back and recalculating we still go over the cap, ….like i said TOO LOW

    40,000,000

    Sean Avery – 400,000

    Mathieu Dandenault – 1,262,000

    Pavel Datsyuk – 700,000

    Boyd Devereaux – 1,400,000

    Kris Draper – 1,150,000

    Sergei Fedorov – 2,000,000

    Tomas Holmstrom – 1,300,000

    Maxim Kuznetsov – 475,000

    Igor Larionov – 1,150,000

    Manny Legace – 800,000

    Kirk Maltby – 1,100,000

    Jason Williams – 375,000

    Henrik Zetterberg – 825,000

    Niklas Lidstrom – 10,000,000

    Jiri Fischer – est. 1,200,000

    Chris Chellios – 6,000,000

    Luc Robitaille – 4,000,000

    Shanny – Feds – Williams

    Zetterberg – Datsyuk – Devereaux

    Robitaille – Larionov – Holmstrom

    Maltby – Avery – Drapes

    Lids – Fischer

    Cheli – Kuznetsov

    Dande – Fischer/Lids/Chelly

odd out are: Stevie, Hully, Cujo, Mac, Wallin

…..still a little over the cap here, but these are way too low like i said above, i think bare minimum for the cap would be around 50,000,000

  5. Sugar_Ray_Ryan says:

One problem I see – does this cap include every player contract (2-way deals, filler role players, etc). Teams have more than 19 players under contract.

  6. Amazingoilers says:

Here’s what Edmonton would (will) look like with a 30 million salary cap.

    1st line.. Carter Comrie Smyth

    2nd line.. York Dopita Chimera

    3rd line.. Grier Marchant Moreau

    4th line.. Horcoff Reasoner Laraque

Defence Brewer, Smith, Niinimaa, Staois, Ferguson, Semenov

In the mix…..Stoll, Rita, Hemsky, Green, Too early to tell exact line combos or where everyone will play but the point is, Edmonton pretty much has a team with less than 30 mill. I also think the Oilers will make a move or 2 before the season starts. Bye Marchant and somebody.. Rita and Chimera both should make the team and who knows with Stoll and Hemsky Should be interesting!

  7. Amazingoilers says:

Duh, and oh yeah and Tommy Salo in net of course!

  8. DaAvs says:

No it doesn’t that was a point I had thought about. Plus it’s 21 with goalies. Main thing is does the AHL create a cap as well? For the most part you’ll have an active roster. Unless you go with a signifcant cap increase it’ll be hard for any team to have a single super star if you include the cap with the AHL teams.

  9. DaAvs says:

It’s just so funny to see Fedarov’s contract 2 million. If you can get him to stick around for that it’d be great. But this makes me wonder, how many players will be forced into retirement if a salary cap is imposed?

  10. Sugar_Ray_Ryan says:

I can’t imagine Moreau will be with the team too much longer, and I’d rather have Hemsky on Dopita’s right wing than Chimera. Chimera’s a left winger – he’d be better on the 4th line with Reasoner and Laraque. The Hor could take Marchant’s spot, and Green could fill Moreau’s. Talking Salary wise, that’s one of the best “Cheap teams” you could assemble. GO OILERS GO!!

  11. Sugar_Ray_Ryan says:

I was just counting your lineup and you had 19 guys listed. You’re a couple of guys short :) I don’t think an NHL cap would include AHL players, but what do you do up call-ups? That has to fit into your budget, so I figure that’s gotta be included in the cap configuration.

  12. chewy says:

Calgary doesn’t have that type of money to begin with, so add some players to the roster.

  13. rrudd says:

don’t forget about the reserves that count against the cap…my list is assuming the 2-way contract players who are on the dallas roster as well.

  14. garry1221 says:

quite a few i’d imagine… some might do it for the good of the team, but others won’t be so happy being forced into what is essentially early retirement

  15. aaron says:

Or they could just sign for like 5 million less.

  16. DaAvs says:

It’s hard for me to imagine a salary cap going lower then 30 million. Only way that can happen is if we just play AHL teams.

  17. aaron says:

In 3 years, everyone on Detroit will be retired anyway, so we should be able to make a 40 million cap anyway.

    Nicklas Lidstrom D 10,500,000

    Brendan Shanahan LW 6,000,000

    Sergei Fedorov C 2,000,000

    Darren McCarty RW 1,950,000

    Boyd Devereaux C 1,450,000

    Tomas Holmstrom LW 1,150,000

    Kris Draper C 1,150,000

    Mathieu Dandenault D 1,100,000

    Kirk Maltby LW 1,058,750

    Zetterburg 1,000,000 (est.)

    Avery 500,000 (est.)

    Jiri Fischer D 975,000

    Pavel Datsyuk C 700,000

    Jesse Wallin D 660,000

    Manny Legace G 550,000

    Maxim Kuznetsov D 475,000

Yeah, this roster above is just over 30 million dollars, though I’m sure most would have gotten raises by then. Still under 40. If you drop CuJo and go w/ Legace, anyway. I personally would see how many would be willing to rework their contracts (Shanny and Lidstrom at least), and use the extra cash to take advantage of everyone else who got dumped by their old teams. Bet we could sign one or two 60 point free agents w/ 5 million (if Shanny dropped to 4 and Lidstrom dropped to 7.5).

    Lines:

    Shanny Fedorov Draper

    Deverauex Datsyuk Freeagent

    Holmstrom Williams Zetterburg

    Maltby Avery McCarty

    Lidstrom Fischer

    Dandy Kuznetsov

    Wallin Bykov

    Legace

    ???

*raises eyebrow* Pretty bad, but could be worse. Hope those rookies are as good as advertised.

  18. RooksOilers says:

    Could’nt agree with you more on Hemsky playing with Dopita and York. I think the Oiler four lines could look like this;

    Smyth Comrie Carter

    York Dopita Hemsky

    Green Swanson Rita

    Chimera Reasoner Laraque

Goodbyes: Daniel Cleary, Todd Marchant, Mike Grier and Ethan Moreau

Man looking at those Four Lines talk about CHEAP! What you think?

  19. mikster says:

    ………riiiiiiiiiiight……

  20. saiklo says:

I would make out a nice fantasy roster to fit within your budget, but the Penguins already have! So has Carolina and other responsible teams in the sport. Seems like this article only applies to fans whose teams try to buy talent instead of raising it.

  21. garry1221 says:

hell, some of em have defered their salaries before, im sure they’d do it again if they had to meet the cap

  22. garry1221 says:

nice response smartass…… but seriously, detroit not a responsible team?…. did u not hear about players like shanny, stevie, and cheli defering salary to sign players like hull and robitaille?….. this shows not only responsible team, but responsible players, save your posts like this for other boards or sites

  23. Sugar_Ray_Ryan says:

For the most part I agree with that, but I personally think that Horcoff will get in before Swanson. He’s better defensively and has more speed (when he uses it) than Swanson. I also get the feeling that Rita will be in the A to start the year (if Hemsky flounders) until some depth is dealt. I don’t think Grier is going anywhere. Personally, I think we may have one of the best 4th lines in the business with Chimera, Reasoner, and Laraque. Chimera’s a great S–t disturber, and with BG taking charge of layin’ the smack down, Reasoner could play the perimiter game he loves so much. Man, I can’t wait for October!

  24. adambuffalo says:

I agree with most people on that $30M is too low, but I don’t see why every team could not work with the $40M cap. I couldn’t find a recent copy of NHL payrolls, but I did find the one from 00-01. That year only six teams were over $40M. However, 20 teams were over the $30M. I think the league would benefit for the cap, especially if they enstated a profit sharing clause where the big teams give money to the smaller teams. The NHL already makes up the difference in Canadian money to US money for players getting salaries in US dollars, so what would be the big deal? Plus, anyone player who chooses to opt for early retirement instead of taking a paycut…GOOD. Who wants someone on there team that is only playing for the money and not because they love to play? Not me. The highest player on the Sabres is Satan, and he is ranked around 80th in salary.

  25. Amazingoilers says:

I can’t see 4 rookies making the team. Swanson, Chimera, Rita and hemsky will not all make the team. Hemsky will be good no doubt but I doubt we’ll see him for another year. First of all, hes not signed yet. 2nd of all Rita and CHimera have done their time in Hamilton, Hemsky hasn’t played in hamilton yet and is only 19. Chimera is not a 4th liner and hes got a 1 way ticket so he’ll make the team for sure. Best bets are Rita and Chimera to make the club but rita is more of a 2 way player than an offensive guy like Chimera. Depending on who gets traded soon depends on the line combo’s….that being said the Oilers are in a great position having so many players ready for the NHL. I can’t wait to go watch training camp on Sept 13 and 14!

  26. rrudd says:

    responsible teams win.

    irresponsible teams lose.

i don’t care what they pay.

my dallas stars were irresponsible last year. not because they spent money, but because those expenditures didn’t lead to wins.

i would agree that carolina is responsible. i also think detroit is responsible. i don’t think pittsburgh is responsible…their team is collapsing.

  27. Sugar_Ray_Ryan says:

That’s why Swanson WON’T Make the team. I think the rookies that will make the team are Hemsky and Chimera. Kevin Lowe himself said that sending Hemsky back to hull was a waste of his development, and he’s too young to go to the A. SO, he’s either an Oiler, or he’s back in the Q learning nothing. And don’t worry, he’ll sign. Have you seen Rita play? Holy Crap does he have skills! I think he’ll be more than a 3rd liner – just because he’s got great 2 way game doesn’t mean he’ll be relegated to the 3rd line. There’s just no room for him now until one of the vets is dumped. Plus, he’s the only one with a 2-way contract. I agree with you about Chimera, he’s got skills and can fly, but I don’t think you can have him and Marchant on the same line. That’s why I say let him go on the 4th (for now – his time will come), let BG clear some space for him, and let Reasoner hit ’em with the passes. How good would that look?

  28. RooksOilers says:

Points well taken! The reason I like Hemsky so much is that he made such a big splash in last years training camp! Another point about Hemsky is that he could being playing along side a fellow countryman in Dopita. What you think about Alexei Semenov making the team?

  29. RooksOilers says:

Yeah I almost forgot about Horcoff!

  30. Sugar_Ray_Ryan says:

I’d ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see Semenov make the team… but I don’t think another year in the A would be bad for him. I personally think that Pisa’s got the edge on the number 6 D man. He’s got a huge blast from the point (like Semenov), and he’s got the advantage of being a right handed shot. That would balance out our D nicely.

  31. DaAvs says:

What’s funny is that if Jagr had still been on there you’d have to choose between sending Jagr away letting Lemiux retire. Or picking between Straka or Kovalev. Which would’ve you choosen?

  32. aaron says:

I’m positive Lidstrom and Shanny would at least. Personally, I say sign them all to Fedorov style contracts right before the break: huge signing bonuses, then like 2 million a year from then on. :b

  33. guinsfan4life says:

WHen you put a cap on team salaries, you give each team a level playing field and allow them to spend their money where they feel necessary. With that said, I would pretty much combine players with an affordable salary compared to production, have one superstar player who makes alot of money and build with younger players around those.

That team you put into play is a reasonably talented set of lines and defensive pairings.

  34. Bert_Floyd says:

Theres no way the cap will be 40,000,000 that means half the nhl teams will have to cut salary and half the nhl teams will vote against it. Now 50,000,000 makes it 22 vs. 8 which makes much more sense. 50,000,000 with revenue sharing to bring everyone else up to 40.
