03/04 season they finished last in their division.

Wiemer was claimed in 03 on Nov 13th.

In 2003? Minnesota wasn't low in the standings they placed 6th.

Minnesota had one of the first cracks at him because they were low in the standings. So they were thinking about trading him, however the way the NHL rules are/were in that CBA stated that he would have had to be placed on waivers again being available to all the teams that were lower in priority to Minnesota at the time they picked him up. That was basically most of the league that season.

I'm a little surprised that Schneider hasn't been picked up yet. For a defenceman who got almost 40 points last year (more than Redden) and costs less than Redden, what's the hold-up here? This guy can be a missing piece for a lot of teams. Here is a list of teams who have cap room, narrowed by whom I think should actually pick him up and why:
Colorado - although its not like them to push themselves to the cap, he would be useful to them since they want to make the most of their last few Sakic years.
Minnesota - They lost a LOT of scoring power with Demitra and Rolston, I can't see how Schneider would hurt in regaining a bit of that. Although he may not fit their 'defence first' style.
Carolina - I still don't buy their power play, Corvo/Schneider sounds like a good solution
Columbus - Keep adding those pieces and make that push! Their D is junk...I'm not even sure who is SUPPOSED to man that power play with Hainsey gone...Commodore?
Phoenix - This is the year, Doan/Jokinen/Mueller on the power play with Schneider and Jovo on point. Make it happen.
Atlanta - Depends on what they want out of this season: Win now, or Win Later. But I would say they need to make the best of the last Kovalchuk years and go now. This is a good way to force a big name to come to Atlanta without giving up anything, what's the freaking hold-up?!

Yeah…lol… I just remember it from when Minnesota claimed Jason Wiemer off NYI back in 03 and they were thinking about trading him because they were finishing out of the playoffs, but there was no point in doing it because another team wanted to claim him also so they would have got nothing in return…
