Senators looking for some grit

“The Ottawa Senators will continue to search for more physical presence as they head towards the playoffs. Ottawa Senators GM John Muckler, despite obvious financial restraints because of the club’s recent bankruptcy declaration, is still searching for more grit for his first-place club. One player Muckler knows very well is Rangers agitator Matthew Barnaby, who was with Muckler in Buffalo a few years ago. So far, the asking price for Barnaby’s services, however, is too high. According to the LA Times, Muckler was reportedly rebuffed by Rangers GM Glen Sather when Muckler offered Swedish winger Magnus Arvedson for Barnaby’s services. However, Muckler isn’t likely to give up.”

They had some grit before trading Andre` Roy for Ylonen. And, they let Steve Martins go on waivers.

They still keep whining, yet they still keep losing toughness.

  2. keon says:

Could the Sens rent Owen Nolan for the playoffs?

  3. edmontonrules says:

If any Canadian team got Nolan it would be sweet.

  4. deflowd says:

yeah sure cause the senators have so much cash

  5. jammer21 says:

martins is one heck of a competitor, but he is nOt tough. he’s only like 4’8″ and weighs a buck-twelve……….

  6. jammer21 says:

no, b/c he is under contract for the next couple years….

  7. habsoverserver says:

Ottawa will definately need someone to crash the crease hard in the playoffs if they meet Belfour.

They have a better chance of getting Graves or Marchment, maybe even Thorton but no chance on Nolan. If the Habs fade they could get McKay.

While both Graves and McKay are old, they each have a couple of rings and are cheaper than many other playoff veterans.

  8. mikster says:

Plays with an edge though….that’s toughness, better than nothing.

  9. mikster says:

Sure, only if the Sharks would pay 90% of his salary.

  10. mikster says:

Ehh…. Graves is not the answer for the Senators. He does drive to the net, but his type of toughness is not the kind that the Senators need.

Barnaby would have been the best fit for them, especially with the season he is having….but in the end, he is not worth Arvedsson either.

They just need a 4th line tough nut that can skate. Sandy McCarthy !!!!!

  11. habsoverserver says:

Senators need someone who has won a cup.

Even the Rangers don’t need McCarthy. He’s invisible on the ice.

It’s slim pickings and the Sens are not the best deadline trading team. They should get a vet early and rest him for the playoffs.

  12. swedishvoice says:

    Magnus Arvedsson for Mike Danton?

  13. trademan says:

    this is a test

  14. amok says:

Maybe if the Sens want a first-class whiner. If all the Sens want is a pest they’d be smarter to go after a player with similar skills who comes with less baggage.

That same source just said that the Flyers traded for Kapanen in a 6 player deal. Who were the other 2 players????? It was a 4 player deal

Kapanen and Bast for Brendl and St Jacques Cousteau

Not sure I would trust that source if they can’t even get their trade info right.

Ottawa was my pick to win the Cup since the beginning since from about 15-20 games into the season. I am holding my position on this for sure.

But the missing piece for this team is a gritty annoying SOB like Barnaby, Tucker, Webb, Nash, Roy, someone like that. They have to be able to play 15+ minutes a game in the playoffs and contribute, but their role is to piss of the opponent to distraction and take them off their focus of slowing Ottawa down.

A guy like this will also pick up the overall nastiness and intensity of the team. Guys like Alfredsson, Hossa, Redden, Chara et al. can play with attitude and grit for sure – a guy like Barnaby or Tucker will keep the intensity up every play. Chris Niel will comlpliment this nastiness nicely.

Then, add a tough 5th or 6th defenseman like Yuskevich or Ward, or someone and no one will stop Ottawa.

And they are right there!!! They could probably have Barnaby and Yuskevich or Ward for Arvedsson, a good prospect, a marginal prospect and a second rounder. This is nothing to give up for a team with as deep a farm as Ottawa has.

They are not going to be able to keep this team together much longer. Now is the time!!! Go for it all!! And it will not even cost that much at all!!

I am a hard core Toronto fan, but this team can beat the Leafs with these 2 additions. If they beat the Leafs I will cheer as loud and hard for Ottawa as I would for my Beloved Buds.

Go Leafs, if not Go Sens!

  17. Aetherial says:

I am a hardcore Leafs fan also.

The Leafs would very likely NOT beat the Sens in a playoff series right now. I hate to admit that.

If the Sens add a grit/character guy who can play a bit and a solid D-man… they are a very serious threat to win it all this year.

mike danton is a legend i doubt the devils would trade him for anything less than a big grab of chips
