Senators looking to both buy and sell

Bruce Garrioch of the Sun Media is looking to make some deals to trade away contracts to be able to free up some cash to go free agent shopping.

It is suggested that the Senators have been trying to deal Peter Schaefer and his three million dollar contract and Martin Gerber and his large contract. It is suggested that both LA and the Phoenix Coyotes have interest in Gerber in order to shore up their shaky goalie situations. It is also mentioned that dealing Schaefer will be a difficult move to make because of his salary.

Garrioch indicates that some of the players that the Senators could be after in the free agent market include Bill Guerin, Robert Lang or Zubris and would like to be able to keep Mike Comrie.

Didn't the Leafs try to do this in 2005-2006, they're big trades:

    To New Jersey:
    Ken Klee

    To Toronto:
    Alexander Suglobov

    To Toronto:
    Luke Richardson

    To Columbus:
    4th Round Draft Pick

Basically we traded away Klee, and then found a replacement for Klee in Richardson, hope you guys have better luck than us :S

I think that the Senators will try to sign Ryan Smyth if the cannot sign Ryan Smyth than the Sneators will make a trade for Erik Cole because the Senators need a big power foward.

Also I perdict Perter Schaefer will be traded today and Martin Gerber will be traded or on the waiver wire today to free up room to sign Ryan Smyth tomrrow or to make a trade for Erik Cole.

I hope you realize that if they put gerber on waivers and no one picks him up and they send him to the minors that his contract will still count against the cap. And nobody in there right mind is going to trade for the guy.

  4. Neely4Life says:

um your wrong.  They still have to pay him his money, but it does not count against the cap.  Thats what NJ did with Mogilny, its a loop hole in the CBA.

I'd believe the Zubrus part, but the rest is simply foolishness. Zubrus would fit in well with the senators third or second line….I can see him playing next to antoine vermette….but Bill Guerin is out of his prime and robert lang is just not a senator. Not fast enough, and not physical enough. Lang belongs on a team like phoenix who could really use him. If he was on the senators he would be on the third line and that is no place for robert lang. In Phoenix he would be the top centre and he could really help out that franchise…if he does sign with ottawa i can see him becoming the samsonov of montreal.

I would like the Senators to sign Jeff freiszen he would be a good fit for the Senators third line or fouth line.

    long term injury reserve

  8. Neely4Life says:

they pretty much just sent him to the minors.  to his credit he reported and didnt complain.
