Sergei Samsonov to tryout for the Wings?

Sergei Samsonov , who played for the Detroit Vipers, has been skating with the Red Wings during the conditioning period.

An unsigned unrestricted free agent, Samsonov lives in Oakland Township and is considering several professional tryouts.

Nothing, though, is definite.

“I’m staying in some kind of competitive shape, and see what happens,” Samsonov said.

In 78 games with Carolina and Florida last season, Samsonov had 40 points (13 goals).

Samsonov would like to try out with the Red Wings, but the team appears comfortable with the depth it has up front.

40 pts in 78 games last yeaar for Samsonov isn't bad. I think he can still play as a depth forward. If he doesn't end up in Detroit, I bet someone will pick him up. Also if he's attending a camp with no contract, then you know he's desperate, he'll sign somewhere for around $1 million.

I didn't realize he still put up numbers like that. That isn't half bad, especially if you get him on the cheap.

Schenn is signed finally. 3.6 million a year isn't half bad. Comparable to the 2nd contract Seabrook received.

Interestingly the Leafs could have had him for 3 million a year but only for 3 years. The wanted some longer term security I guess, and were willing to pay 600 000 more for it.

It makes much more sense to take that risk of adding 2 years, when it's only 600 more per year.  Especially when there's potential for that contract to reach the 5 million mark.

Hope he makes the team and scores 15 goals so everyone call Holgrem savvy whereas if Sammy scored those goals on any other team they'd be completely forgettable

I honestly haven't followed his career much at all since he left Boston. He was such a frustrating player here. So skilled (best word I can think of to describe him is a waterbug), but the dude was ALWAYS injured. Wish him the best of luck though. Very entertaining to watch when he's on his game.

Yeah, interesting they wouldn't do the 3 year deal; he'd be a RFA either way. Good deal either way though.
