Shark bait for Heatley gone

Also, talk won’t go away that the Sharks are set to give Bruins restricted free-agent winger Phil Kessel an offer sheet. As reported earlier this summer by Sun Media, Heatley’s agents, J.P. Barry and Stacey McAlpine, have been given Murray’s permission to broker a deal.

After Heatley turned down a deal to the Oilers on July 1, it’s believed the Rangers, Kings and Hawks remain on his wish list.

The Senators don’t want to bring Heatley back for camp for what would be a distracting sideshow, but they could be left with no choice.

Murray wants to get as much as possible for the two-time 50-goal scorer, but has received only mild interest.

Look bottom line is that San Jose needs to dump Marleau's contract in order to make cap space to bring in Heatly or Kessel. Now buy getting rid of Marleau, they are taking down a potentially perfect scoring line. San Jose is all out of promising prospects and depth for their second line. Let's face it, Cheechoo ain't cutting it and Wilson knows that, that's why he tried moving him to Montreal and Ottawa. The only deal in mind that can better the Sharks, if they dump Marleau, is attempt to acquire the K brothers from Montreal and a defense man via round pick. Don't forget, Erhoff left a gap in their defensive brigade. We all know that's what Gainey is aiming for.

If Montreal can't acquire Marleau, they'll aim for Richards or Arnott as a Plan A, or a Horton or Frolov as a Plan B, in order to complete that top "6".

    Wait … what?

The ONLY deal in the entire league that the Sharks can make thats better than Heatley for Marleau is ….. Marleau for the freaking Kostitsyn brothers?

Cheecho for Ryder makes a little more sense to me. Boston gets some cap relief and SJ would get a foward capable of finding the back of the net.

As for Kessel, I don't see SJ landing him. We know just how hard it is to free up space, these deals usually takes months and months and months and…. Something that epic can't happen overnight.

If it were to happen I wonder how Chiarelli will feel about getting a late 1st, 2nd and third 3rd pick when he could have had Kaberle.

i thought it was just a 1st and 3rd but i could be wrong

    nope you were right

im pretty sure they could get a better deal that the Kostistyns
    no one wants them anyways
and they could actually get Kessel without moving cap space
they have 5.5 million in cap space at the moment

The idea is to wait until October 1st though, and then it would only cost a 1st and a 3rd.  At that point, Boston can't match any offers for him, so even a 4.5 million dollar offer (just under the 1st, 2nd, 3rd territory) would suffice.  This is why I say that Chiarelli is full of crap when he says he isn't concerned about the salary cap.  EIther he dumps Bergeron for nothing, or a combination of lesser players for nothing, and signs kessel, OR, he loses Kessel on October 1st for late picks…

The Leafs should try to get Alfred E Neuman.

  9. reinjosh says:

    that makes sense
    yah Chiarelli is screwed

I would take Bergeron for something like the Ehrhoff deal though….
