Shields To Atlanta? is reporting that the Atlanta Thrashers have signed veteran goaltender Steve Shields to a tryout contract with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL.

full article:

Since Adam Berkhoel has been re-assigned to Chicago, the Thrashers are only carrying one goalie with them…Shields would make a decent fill-in until Lehtonen is healthy again.

Like why not try and get Cechmanek from the Kings, or Turek, Potvin and Dafoe are out there too.

Shields would be a reasonable bandaid goaltender for the Thrashers until Dunham and Lehtonen return. They could even waive him down to the Wolves after that and not really worry about him. If he gets picked off waivers (which he won’t) they won’t care. Of course now this move puts a nix on any idea of a trade between the Sabres and Thrashers for a goaltender.

cechmanek and turek are playing overseas

i dont think that an option of trading for a decent goaltender is something they want to do because kari is the future workhorse.

trading for backups would be a waste of players.

WHy waste the money? None of the available players out there are really that much of an improvement on what they have now, and to pay those kind of guys the money they want, they couldn’t do anything with them.

Shields has done fair as a starter in his career, for the price they will pay for him, he is one of the best options available. Only other thing I would think of is maybe to make a trade for David Aebischer, as I have heard rumors he may be shopped around. That, only because he is already a good goaltender, and definitely an improvement on their current guys, and should they do well enough this year, could take them into the playoffs, which is something I don’t think they can do with the roster as is.

Why not go after them? because none of them are in the NHL but Potvin……………….

Shields is a decent guy to use, and I agree he can be sent down without much trouble (sad that a guy like him is playing in the minors, but it does prove he enjoys playing)

It’s a funny thing with goalies in particular. This guy was a back up for years, then a starter in San Jose, then a backup, now he can barely crack a lineup. There are stories like this all the time, it’s just sort of strange, but I agree, at least the guy gets to play, and he’s making a decent living doing it, I guess you can’t complain.

Potvin is in the NHL? Where?
