Should the Senators trade Arvedson ?

Midway through the month of October, rumours were brewing about the Ottawa Senators wanting to trade Magnus Arvedson. It seems like all this trade talk has died down, but why?

Although Arvedson has developed into a good two way player with a defensive focus – as seen with his ice time during short-handed situations – he hasn’t lived up to the expectations that the Senators had for him.

Arvedson is earning $1.6 million U.S. this season (8th highest paid on the Sens roster), and will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Furthermore, he only has 3 points in 14 games this season, and has a tendency of getting hurt.

My view is that Ottawa has enough defensive-minded forwards as is, and that Arvedson is expendable and should be traded. I’d personally like to see John Muckler try and get a third line grinder or checker – maybe Matthew Barnaby?

He had teriffic chemistry with bonk and hossa.. Remove him from that line and ofcourse its bound to happen.. the Answer is simple. Besides spezza is ready, why not utilize him

The next week or so should be interesting. With Bonvie on the shelf and most of the injured players back now, you have a big decision to make with Spezza. Can he fill the gap? Not at wing but moving White or Fisher to wing would not be a bad move. This leaves a winger out of a spot and the most viable player would be Arvedson. I don’t think he has ever lived up to what was expected of him but is that a reason to trade him? With a minor team chock full of prospects and potentials my answer is yes. Trading him for Barnaby would be good but then you have another winger. I see a two player swap brewing for someone and either a draft pick or future considerations. What I don’t expect to see is Arvedson landing in an Eastern Conference team any time soon. He will probably be moving west if anywhere.

Arvedson is a very underrated player, I hope the Sens keep him, he worked great with Hossa the past few seasons and I think taking him off the Hossa line has hurt both.

Because of his salary and the great youth in Grand Rapids, I can see him getting traded.

I believe that Arvedson is a product of the Ottawa system. Some may think that this is a good thing, but I don’t think so. A lot of the Ottawa players are only looked as good players because of their system, which is why the team can’t step it up at playoff time. They should get rid of Arvedson for a guy like Jody Shelly, make this team tougher already.
