Size matters and it's hurting Leafs

The Maple Leafs need it, and Brian Burke has to go out and get it — sooner rather than later. The Leafs are on a fast train to Funkville and something has to be done to get them back on the rails.

They’ve lost three straight and have dropped out of a playoff spot, and have managed only six goals in their last four games.

Unless something is done quickly, the team’s “dream” of making the playoffs for the first time since 2004 will become another nightmare for that shell-shocked collection of saps known as Leafs Nation. Big Burkie tweeted a while back that this team needs size. And some scoring would help. What they do have in abundance is depth on defence, so if it means giving up one of their quality young D-men for some size and/or scoring, so be it. (Perhaps Keith Aulie or Luke Schenn, but not Cody Franson or Jake Gardiner).

Burke has to pull the trigger before it’s too late.

As for the goalie situation, you have to figure that either The Monster or Sunny Jim will eventually step up and give the Leafs some quality goaltending. They’ve done it in the past, it’s just a matter of one of them getting hot and carrying the team for a while. And Wilson has to keep juggling the goalies until one steps up. I don’t think it’s time to panic and give up young talent or draft picks for a goaltender. It’s a fickle position. The guy you trade for might go into a funk as quickly as James Reimer has gone into his.

I wonder if the Burke could find a way to dump Komisarek off on another team. How about Columbus, they are looking for help on defence and would get rid of Derick Brassard for anything they can get. So Brassard makes 3.2 million over the next two years and Komisarek makes 4.5 million over the next two, so the Leafs would have to add more, maybe a player from the marlies or a draft pick, and Columbus could throw in a player like Sami Pahlsson (UFA at end of season) so they are not over the salary cap.

I really hope not. What is a good website to watch games online? I live out in the west and don't get many eastern games.  But I get to watch every single Canucks game! FML…

Anyone else sort of like the D pairings today?

  4. 93killer93 says:

Try thats where i catch sport games.

  5. 93killer93 says:

I didn't catch much of the game but I really like the idea of Phaneuf and Schenn playing together.

  6. 93killer93 says:

Considering they just signed Lebda, I think Komisarek to Columbus is a definite possibility.

Jaroslav Halak just posted his second straight shutout.

The guy has great numbers again…But the Blues are 13-7-5 with him because they oddly enough do not give him the same run support as they do Elliot.

Come on St. Louis. Though, its great to see some excitement in that city again for the Blues.

I would rather grab Parise then Ryan and Getzlaf. The ducks are going to be asking for a lot for those two guys, and since Parise is a UFA at the end of the season then he may come cheaper then the other two. I really like Getzlaf but the price is going to be through the roof. I would rather wait patiently for Colborne.

For the rest of the season we can have Ryan/Parise-Bozak-Kessel, and then next season we can have Ryan/Parise-Colborne-Kessel.

I know Colborne may not be as good as Getzlaf, especially in his first full year, which will be next year i'm hoping, with two wingers like Ryan/Parise and Kessel, does he really have to be that good?

    What you guys think?

I posted this exact same comment in the Leaf Trade Watch: Power Forward article but only 12 comments in that article and dun think a lot of people will read it, so i'll post it here

"I am more than happy to offer two firsts and a second for parise, exactly what we did for Kessel right? but here is the twist, boston got a 2nd overall, 9th overall and a 32nd overall pick for Kessel. If the leafs aquire Parise and worse case lose in the first round than the devils will only get back a 15th to a 22nd overall pick, and 45th to a 53rd overall pick in this years draft and possibly a 20th to a 25th overall pick next years draft. So sounds the same on paper but in reality it's much less value then Kessel's deal, and Lamoriello might argue that, which is fair, but even though I am only willing to through in another average roster player or prospect. If Parise doesn't want to re-sign with the leafs than the devils will have to give back one or some of those picks.

  10. Steven_Leafs says:

he got a 15 save shutout. A solid game for Halak but he wasn't challenged at all.

  11. Steven_Leafs says:

obviously if we get Parise from free agency then it would be much cheaper, lol.

I think Toronto is better off with Getzlaf over Ryan or Parise but if we can get Parise for free then obviously he is the better choice.

  12. JoelLeafs says:

No such thing on the binary scale. Doable or not, that`s it.

  13. Steven_Leafs says:

    Remember 2 things.

    1) Kessel was a RFA, although they had to move him, there was no urgency to move him to the Leafs. Parise is an UFA so theoretically he should be cheaper… much cheaper.

    2) There was no guarantee that those picks were going to be so high. In fact I bet most people thought that those picks would be 9th overall then 16th overall or something like that after he made that trade.

Also I dont think Parise gets traded during the regular season unless the other team is sending them talent that can play for a cup this year. And if you meant offer those picks during the off-season…. so not going to happen. That high of a price is not worth a week of negotiation rights.

Thanks, I'll try it next time.

  16. LeafsFTW17 says:

Yeah Phaneuf and Schenn has to be intimidating for the opposition.  I hope they weren't just showcasing Schenn by putting him up on the first line.
I also like Gardiner and Franson together, having two offensive D men together can create lots of scoring chances.

I wonder if you would be saying that if the goalie getting the shutout was a Leaf…

  19. TheLeafNation91 says:

Probably not, because I've never seen any of these goalies win a 1-0 game.

A little crazy, not really in a good way. But it could potentially translate well. I'd give her a 1.

  22. JoelLeafs says:

Accepting mediocrity? I love how much you guys throw that around. So tell me, what are you doing to change the team? Do you think you whining and *****ing in a forum is going to change anything? Do you seriously think we are happy with a mid-standing team? Of course we'd like to have a dominant leafs squad! The fact that we try to find the good in this season doesn't mean we're fine with it and don't want improvement. Seriously, examine your line of logic, it is absolutely laughable.

If there is one thing that is true, it's that complaining on the Internet will affect the team!
  23. reinjosh says:

No, the Leafs can't improve slowly. They must be amazing right away. Linear growth doesn't exist, and improvement has to just happen instantaneously. Thats the obvious conclusion from their rants. Even growth itself isn't acceptable unless its gigantic (and even then, apparently a 90 point season is useless if you can't hit). No positives can be found either. If you see positives in a young player thats doing something ok but not other things, your just a fool and a moron who doesn't understand hockey or isn't a fan of the team. No, your just being fooled…

  24. TheLeafNation91 says:

Kulemin, Schenn, Kadri, Gustavsson, Reimer, Aulie, MacArthur, and others took BIG steps forward this year. We should be proud, this linear movement is deffinetly on the way up.

The issue is you cannot be critical. You wait until you're wrong, get upset, and start the positive and delusional train once again.

And yeah, KESSEL and LUPUL are putting up 90-point seasons. Let me ask you this josh…If I told you before the season, based on last year, that Lupul and Kessel would put up 90-point seasons, would you expect this team to be a lot better then they are?

Really think about it and get back to me.

  25. senators_choke says:

LeafsNation, don't even bother with these guys. They just don't get it!! Simply don't know what the f*ck they're talking about.

Now you know why I don't spend much time on this site anymore. Life is too short to argue with morons.

  26. TheLeafNation91 says:

They make us (Leaf fans)…Look so dumb.

Maybe they're phonys like you said.

  27. Boston_Bruins says:

Yeah, it could get out of hand. Megaupload going down sucks but at least there's still Mediafire, until that gets the axe too, of course…

  28. reinjosh says:

Haha you guys are so easy to bait. You harp on the same old things over and over. We get it, you guys like to look at things as glass half empty…or rather glass empty completely. Some of choose to be a bit more positive. We're cool with that. We can just as easily see the problems as you can (and we have pointed in out many, many times) but we don't go batshit crazy over it. It's not productive to healthy living. But go on, have fun going through live so sad. And continue to think us being positive doesn't mean we don't criticize. We don't, you just ignore it…

  29. TheLeafNation91 says:

Well, obviously we got to you if you had to comment…

  30. reinjosh says:

Nah I just enjoy people who are easy to make react.

  31. senators_choke says:

Yeah, seriously. What I don't understand is, why would people spend large amounts of time on this forum just to be a cheerleader?

If I wanted cheerleaders, I prefer the ones with boobs.

To you cheerleader Leaf fans, if you're gonna be a cheerleader, you better damn well be a hot chick, and please then post your photo as well.

  32. TheLeafNation91 says:

leafy, you're not showing enough pep.

Channel your inner mojo, josh, and Joel.

I did…And now I see blue and white rainbows and fairies.

  34. LeafsFTW17 says:

To get Kulemin going, should he be put on a line with Bozak and Kessel?
A couple of years ago those three had some chemistry and all three of them have improved since that season. (maybe not statistically for Kulemin)

I want to see Lupul and Kessel back together but if they need to be split up I guess I`d like to see Kulemin join Bozak and Kessel.
