Slim Chance of Smyth Returning to Edmonton

The Edmonton Journal believes that it is not very likely that Ryan Smyth will return to the Oilers this off season. They speculate that Smyths time as an Oiler came to an end when he rejected the Oilers multi year contract back in February.

Although the article in the Edmonton Journal is not too descriptive about Smyth’s future they do report that there is a chance of another long term off the wall contract offer by Charles Wang such as that offered to Yashin and Dipetro. Some of the teams that are mentioned that are likely to make a contract offer to Smyth if he does not sign a contract before the start of July include the New York Rangers, Avalanche, Red Wings and Maple Leafs.

It will sure be an interesting off season.

I'm pretty sure any Canadian team will try to go after him. In fact many teams will give him an offer.

  2. BruMagnus says:

I believe Smyth would be the final piece for the Red Wings to reach the Finals again (assuming Hasek re-signs, or they sign Giguere or equivalent goalie).

  3. Glucker says:

pretty sure he's gonna be back up in Canada, with a long contract, and a NTC/NMC and we all know who the expert at giving those out is XD

  4. beefjerky says:

Hehe…might not be such a bad idea this time however.

I would'nt be surprise if you see the Ryan Smyth sign with the Ottawa Senators and  then see the Ottawa Senators trade Wade Redden away to the Edmonton Oilers for Jason Smith I think if the Ottawa Senators sign ?Ryan Smyth he would be the final peice of the puzzle for the Ottawa Senators to bring the Stanley Cup to Ottawa next season.

  6. JannettyTheRocker says:

Well if we can't get Ryan Smyth to come back to The City of Champions, then I hope that he does sign in Ottawa and you guys get your cup. My second favorite team is the Ottawa Senators, and I hate the Leafs, so I'd love to see the Sens win the cup and rub it in the Leaf's faces…….And, Wade Redden would fit in nicely here in Edmonton with the Mighty Oilers.

    Good deals!!!

Also I think when the Edmonton Oilers get Wade Redden they should make Wade Reddem captin.

Hey Glucker….still waiting on your reply to explain what "XD" means?

Kevin Lowe has said that the Oilers are going to be able to spend at or near the cap this season in large part due to our Canadian dollar being so high. Now I think Lowe should either do 1 of 2 things.
1 , Try and make a trade for Patrick Marleau. There are rumors out there that Marleau could be on the block and that San Jose is going after Drury. In any case Horcoff would have to be part of the deal. If that materializes then try to re-sign Smytty and pick up a marquee defenceman either through trade or free agency. Also the Oilers have some quality prospects and draft picks to trade with and should not have to move Torres or Lupul. I feel that both these guys will bounce back and have good seasons next year ( and not cost much ).
2 , If a trade for Marleau isn't possible then go with the status quo for another year. Take the 3 first rounders and maybe try to trade some veterans for good young players and or prospects. They have 2 first rounders next year as well and its supposed to be a deep draft. There would be no point over paying for Smyth at this point and they could try to plug some holes with lesser profile free agents and young players and build for the next 2 years and come out with a very strong team.

Do you think they would want a lot more for Redden. Like Smith and a 1st rounder (15th from NYI)

  11. thegoalie1976 says:

I like both options. It can't be any worse than this season. Lowe knows what he is doing. In 2-3 years all of these young players will be in the NHL, and the Oilers will look like the Pens this season.

  12. Neely4Life says:

You can count on Lowe making a pitch for Redden.  What he is willin to deal is up in the air.  If i had to guess, its gonna take a D (Staos or Smith) and a forward/prospect min.  Might even throw a draft pic in there.  I know Redden wants to move out west after his contract is up, so the chances of him re-signing as an oiler are high too.  Redden goin to Edmonton makes too much sense for both teams.  I know the sens are interested in Torres and they want a rock back on the blueline. Id love to see Smith in Red and Gold.  Sens will also make a pitch for Smyth, they are that close to the cup, and if the Sens can get Smith into Ottawa, you might see a little persausion from Jason Smith to get Ryan Smith to sign for a chance at a cup, Edmonton cant offer that right now.  That being said none of this is gonna happen haha.

Torres and Jason Smith for Redden sounds good for both teams

So I guess we will be seeing "Go Oilers Go!!! 2008 Stanley Cup Champions" until the middle of February when they are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs again.

  15. JannettyTheRocker says:

Hey, I wasn't around for most of last season, so you have nothing to complain about…..but I'm back now, and this is the Mighty Oiler's year to win the cup, so yes……'re going to see this from now until June when they hoist the cup.

  16. JannettyTheRocker says:

Personally, I would totally give up Smith and a first-rounder to get Wade Redden. He would fit in great in Edmonton, and would be our franchise player I'm sure………easily a great deal.

And I do also think that Wade Redden should be the Mighty Oiler's captain. Good idea.

  17. tancred says:

The article mentioned Colorado being interested in Smyth.  Despite the divisional rivalry between Colorado and Edmonton that Smyth played a big part in for many years, Smyth landing in Colorado seems to make sense.  It would be a nice fit for him to play alongside Sakic.  Might not happen; there will be twenty some other teams bidding for Smyth's services.  I like the idea of it, though.

  18. Pedro says:

I didn't really pay attention to this season. Did the Flames get past the first round?

  19. FlamingHomer says:

If you weren't paying attention then I'm going to say, yes they did, and hope you believe me.

  20. FlamingHomer says:

Some people thrive on disappointment I guess.
