Smyth and Peca to the Island??

The New York Post is reporting that the Islanders buyout of Yashin could lead to a long term deal for Ryan Smyth. Larry Brooks indicates that if the Islanders did keep Yashin, Ryan Smyth would not even consider signing with the team. This does not speak well for Yashin’s team chemistry.

Another player who the Post reports may have an interest in going to the Island is Peca who played well under Nolan in Buffalo.

It seems that the Islanders may be finally heading in a positive direction. Good job Snow for making decisions to get rid of players who clearly do not give one hundred percent and who disrupt team chemistry.

“The organization holds Alexei in the highest regard as a player, as a teammate and as a person,” owner Charles Wang said in a statement.

I love this quote from Brooks:

“Of course the Islanders do. That’s why they’re paying him $17.63M not to be on the team.”

I’m just curious to see who takes up Yashin, and what they will pay him.

  2. BruMagnus says:

It would be interesting to see Peca back in an Isles jersey if Toronto doesn't sign him.

I don't think Smyth is staying with the Isles or else he may have already re-signed.

  3. Girardi46 says:

Possible, or he was just holding out in anticipation of the buyout.

  4. Glucker says:

Peca, not going to the island, he made it clear he wanted to stay in blue and white, even thoughhe understood he wouldn't be able to get the salary he made last year, due to injury. Peca will be back, the Leafs need him. And as for Smyth, he I doubt he'll stay on the island, but then again, i didn't think he would leave Edmonton, so… yea…

the Islanders need to settle down for a few years, hang near the bottom of the standings, get some good young guys, develop them, and make a run for the cup w/ them… Leafs should do the same… but they won't, not until Sundin retires, they'll keep on trying to get in to the playoffs and be the underdog to win the cup, lol.

  5. Glucker says:

    Ottawa XD

  6. Glucker says:

You know, this Yashin buy-out may be a blessing in disguise for the Leafs, we may be able to send McCabe over in a cap-clearing move… they do have the room, considering Blake ain't resigning, and IMO neither is Cap'n Canada

  7. NHLman says:

"Larry Brooks indicates that if the Islanders did keep Yashin, Ryan Smyth would not even consider signing with the team. This does not speak well for Yashin’s team chemistry."

This does not speak well of Ryan Smyth.

  8. nordiques100 says:

its too bad this came from the Post. Brooks has as good a track record of being right as Garrioch which is terrible.

I think Peca would want to play in 2 places. Toronto or Buffalo. At his age, 33, he wants to settle close to home which is Buffalo. If he comes relatively cheap it wouldnt surprise me to see him back with the Sabres. They were missing grit during the playoffs.

After the antropov signing and expected Sundin deal, the Leafs have about 10 mil under the cap. they may be able fit Peca under but they'll need to solve their needs for a backup goalie and a sniper.

Smyth is a crapshoot. He could very well return to the island. but i think its going to take a monster 8-10 year deal to do so. The thing is, Wang has a track record of doing that. So that makes this possibility of him returning very plausible.

I thinik a team with lots of cap space….like maybe the Flyers….will take a huge run at him.

I think the Rangers too will have a shot. He could replace Shanahan among others contractually and on-ice. I think he still has a very good relationship with Slats who has known Smyth since Ryan was a kid. so there's a good history there. And the Rangers are a good team. They will need to get Nylander under contract among others, but i think they'll make the cap room if they can get this guy.

Smyth, Gomez, Briere, Drury, giguere. they are the marquee guys out there. someone's going to pay them off quite well.

  9. camerak says:

McCabe would have to want to go though, as he has a no trade clause.

  10. Girardi46 says:

Say goodbye to Nylander IMO. But I don't believe Shanahan is going anywhere, he already said he either retires or re-signs with the Rangers, and I think he has enough in him for at least another season

  11. Toonces99 says:

They could of still signed him on the condition that Yashin was bought out…l don't believe Smyth will stay with Islanders.

  12. Toonces99 says:

the islanders may be the only place he would wave his NTC to go to…he's from there and his wife is there also….

  13. Glucker says:

    my point exactly

  14. Glucker says:

you know, i dont think he would want a long term deal in America, he's a Canadian boy, and would prefer to have his name on the cup with a Canadian team… he'll be back up north IMO, and if he signs south, it won't be long term, a season, maybe two… just to see if he could stay there longe

  15. revolution77 says:

i dont know i think that ryan smyth would look good in a wings jersey. and if the cap went up, and detroit was able to resign a few guys at a slightly discounted price (schneider, hasek, and bertuzzi) getting smyth under contract in detroit would defanetly add a new dynamic to this team.

  16. mojo19 says:

The Rangers still have to take care of Jagr's buddy Straka too though.

  17. mojo19 says:

If they sign Smyth they probably would let go of Bertuzzi.

TheFourthPeriod said that the Wings might have interest in Giguere and use their money there this summer.

  18. cecilturtle says:

The Rangers resigned Straka at the start of last years season.  His salary cap hit for next year is $3.3 million.

  19. Girardi46 says:

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe Straka signed a 1 year extension back around February for around 3 mill.

  20. TheDonkey says:

On the Team 1260 in Edmonton yesterday, I think it was Robin Brownlee of the Edmonton Journal, said that supposedly the Islanders had already offered Smyth a 10 year deal at around $5.5M per and he turned it down.

Nobody else would be stupid enough to offer a guy that makes a living getting whiplash a 10 year deal.   If he turned that down, he is not interested in the Islanders.   He will be moving on.

  21. cecilturtle says:

The idea of Smith resigning to stay with the Isles is crazier then the idea of someone letting you drive their car! (SNL)

  22. cecilturtle says:

Not sure of the date, could have been February???  The Rangers signed Straka (who made $3.1 million last year) for this upcoming season for $3.3 million.  This number might include bonuses earned and/or expected to be earned?

  23. Girardi46 says:

could be, not 100% sure… but to be honest, I'm glad he's locked up for the year, because I'd much rather have Straka on the team than Nylander… Straka plays his heart out, you almost can't tell he's a small guy

  24. KingCanada says:

Hes not from there, born in southern Ontario, played junior out west and then was DRAFTED to the NYI.  Only his wife is from there.

Im not sure but i think they spend the off-season there if thats what u meant

  25. KingCanada says:

how does that not speak well for Ryan Smyth??  He doesnt want to play with a bonehead captain woh will get them nowere and happens to suck up a huge amount of cap space making it even harder for that team to win a Cup.  He was so close at the final, do u really think he wants to DETERIORATE his chances at winning?  Im not sure if u understand the mentality of a NHL player, if u dont have a cup u dont have anything except for ur beautiful wife and ur millions of dollars hahaha

  26. cecilturtle says:

Me too…  But I like Nylander he's a great player, but I would rather see the Rangers not spend the money to resign Nylander because he also takes a roster spot away from a younger Center…  As well as also taking away the salary cap room to sign free agent center Drury if he decides to sign with the blueshirts.  What is nice about Straka though is that he could put up great numbers (like he has done his whole career) as Jagrs center.  But he could also play right and left wings as well as the point on the pp.   So unlike Nylander who if signed would be penciled in the first line center spot taking the roster spot of a young center or free agent center.  But Straka can be listed as the first line center centering Jagr and Hossa, but if Drury or Smith come over via freeagency???  Staka could easily move to another line and play all three spots.  No brainer for Slats to sign him up for one more year when he did.

  27. ranger_fan says:

Being the hockey fan and priding myself on knowledge and guessing correctly where many sign, I will take a stab and say Yashin will not be back in the NHL because he has too much pride and won't face the reality of what he is worth. Back to Russia for Yashin

I could see Peca back, but Smyth won't sign before July 1 anyways until he hears all offers.

  28. ranger_fan says:

Don't forget that Straka needed [or still needs] surgery on his shoulder. He has been playing for a couple of months with a bad shoulder.

I too like Straka, and won't be sad to see Nylander go. I'd like the money spent on a defenseman rather than a center. Center is a close #2, but I can't help to feel that Immonen could put up similar numbers, not because he is as good as Nylander, but because Jagr makes everyone around him better.

  29. CaptainAvery says:

First off Larry Brooks is a stupid piece of shit. But onto the real discussion the Islanders will be looking good if the sign Captain Canada, Jason Blake and who knows Daniel Briere I've heard. Just thank god no more Cashin, anytime willing to have this guy is looking at a disaster awaiting.

  30. turdfergusson says:

U nailed it Glucker. You know there's an epidemic  that makes most nhl fans think like it's still 2004(pre-lockout). All my friends told me i was nuts to say smyth was gonzo.Anything is possible now and that's great. Who knows, but i dont see smyth staying, but then again wang could open up his wallet and…. as for peca, who cares?  As an oiler fan i've always hated the leafs for obvious reasons and i feel bad bad for fergie .jr because i think if it were up to him and not the little boys club that run that organization, the leafs could be in the playoffs next year .he has  the stones to trade sundin , tucker etc. The teams that have adapted to the new nhl have had the most success and think i guy like  kevin lowe who lacks in certain areas of managing an organization has the foresight and savvy in other areas  to land another elite player like pronger to get them back to where they belong.

                    any thoughts?
  31. Glucker says:

well, in 4-5 years it will be pre lockout all over again… personally, i think kevin lowe was smart for trading away Smyth, but he didn't do it right, he could have gotten a better deal if he didnt talk to only a few organizations…

  32. BruMagnus says:

yet more proof mojo19 knows little about hockey.

  33. BruMagnus says:

If Hasek re-signs, they drop Bertuzzi and Lang and go after either an elite center ala Gomez or Drury, or would go after Smyth.

If Hasek retires, they have to go after Giguere. It would be all to fitting for him to go there.

  34. LeafsRule_11 says:

The Islanders should resign Smyth and trade Jason Blake for Micheal Peca.
