Something Big Comin' Up in Philly…. + Other News

(Source: Les Amateurs De Sports, AM 550)

According to ”Les Amateurs De Sports”, Bobby Clarke is planning something really big that might take place as soon as in the next few days…

They’ve been told from an inside source that before entering the last 7-game road trip, the team trainer has been asked to bring with him as much as 10 to 12 blank Flyers shirts in case one or more deals happens.

The players involved would be Philly captain Keith Primeau and veteran D-man Éric Desjardins who is set, if I’m not mistaken, to become a UFA after the season’s end.

Other names involved in the talks, the names ”ALL” other teams are after are Justin Williams and Simon Gagné. The Flyers are apparently not interrested in adding those two players in any trade.

Other News/Rumors from around the NHL…

** In Boston, the Bruins are apparently so unhappy with their goaltending tandem that they are showing some interest in Carolina’s goalie Arturs Irbe (Satellite Hotstove, CBC) **

** Another rumor, still with the Bruins, is that Boston would be in the talks with the Phoenix Coyotes to land goaltender Sean Burke. The only name involved in the deal right now would be, you guessed it right, Kyle McLaren. (”Les Amateurs De Sports” AM 550) **

My opinion: Now that Boston’s goalies (Shields, Grahame) showed some major signs of inconsistancy, don’t be surprised if The Bruins decide to put an end to the Kyle Mclaren saga. What GM O’Connell wants in return of the D-men: a top-6 forward, a ”Mclaren Type” defensemen, or a great goalie.

** Oates wants out of the Pond **

After being unhappy with Boston, Washington and more recently with Philadelphia, Adam Oates would apparently be looking for another team change. After he’s been the first FA to sign with a team last summer, Oates only played 24 games with the Quacks and to this date, has a 1G – 13A – 14PTS total. He has fractured his hand and came back to the lineup not long ago. (”Les Amateurs De Sports” AM 550)

** Other Anaheim news, J-S Giguère who’s been the man that kept the team in the race for a playoff spot so far (recording a team record-3 consecutive shutouts recently) has been out last game because of a neck injury. For those wondering when he’ll be back and what exactly is the injury, here’s the quote of the day coming from Anaheim coach Mike Babc.ock: “He’s not dead and he’s not playing, so he is somewhere in between” (ESPN) **

** Interesting fact: While they’ve spend tons and tons of money on Free Agents each year without having any success so far, the New York Rangers staff have somehow not realize that something is missing around them… A Goalie Coach! **

While every other teams in the NHL has one, the Rangers seems to think a 19 year-old guy named Dan Blackburn who is supposed to be their future in net doesen’t need a goaltender coach. I don’t know but it just seems wrong to me. Now Mikster, can you explain it to me please?

Thanx alot for your time!

Marco

I can explain that to you. I forget his first name, but the part time goalie coach of the Rangers is St. Laurent. Problem is, he is part time and he is a very good goalie coach indeed (i.e. Richter, Beezer, Cloutier). He is not a full time coach, which stinks, but my guess is that they want his contract to expire, or they cannot find a good full time goalie coach. Grant Fuhr? Taken! Maybe it will be Mike Richter, Beezer? Who knows. Ranford? Good former goalies, but just because a goalie used to be good, does not mean he will coach well…if he wants to coach at all.

I am eager to see who Clarke will acquire. Problem is, who the heck wants to trade with the Flyers when names like Justin Williams, Simon Gagne, Seidenberg are not on the table? Unless, Clarke wants to make it big. I would admire him even more if he has the guts to feel confident in Hitch and the defense when re-shaping his forwards. Thing is, who is he after? Who would he get in return for trading young players like Gagne or Williams?

    Come on Clarke! Do it!

Irbe to Boston makes sense, but Weekes has not been as solid. Canes will make a change, i would bet even 100 bucks they’ll pull a trade this month, unless they start winning.

Burke is on the IR again. How lucky, neh? However, i highly doubt that the Coyotes would give up Burke so easily. They need more than just a defenseman in retutrn, and i doubt they would be interested in Kunble, Grosek…..i would ask Huml and McLaren in return. Hey, i am trading a top goalie in the NHL, i’ll throw in another player, i deserve to get THAT much at the VERY least.

Oates whines, but who wants an oldie who whines? Well, i think a Western team would be interested. However, there is not much proof that states Oates’ complaining.

  3. titans says:

The Flyers are in denial. They don’t really believe that this group of forwards is as inept as they appear. They’re not making any big deals simply because they have nothing any team wants. Recchu, DeJardone, Primeau…all stiffs that no team wants anything to do with.

  4. SabresFanB says:

I don’t know why, but that was the funniest thing that I have ever read in my life.

  5. edmontonrules says:

I’m pretty sure that Burke just hurt something in his foot. And will be out for approximately 3 weeks. That will probably quell the rumor about him. Unless that team wanted him for the long run, not for the short.

  6. Aetherial says:

They will pull the trigger on something. I think The Leafs, Flyers and Devils will all make big trades this year. Probably not with one another though :)

Flyers won’t be getting no Jagr for Dejardins, Primeau and a pick though.

I bet some teams want Primeau. I bet a few would go for Recchi. ANY team would add Roenick.

  7. Flyer_4_life says:

great, another $200 down the drain on a flyers jersey.

  8. SabresFanB says:

I heard Satan’s and Zhitnik’s name mentioned in a possible deal with the Flyers, but I don’t see Satan going anywhere, especially to the Flyers. Maybe if the Sabres gave them both players and got Gagne and someone else in return…Satan should not be traded though. Neither should Gratton or Kotalik or Miller.

But Regeir is a moron, so don’t expect any trades from the Sabres. It has been said in the local papers that Darcy is waiting for the new owners to take over before he does anything. So basically he will end up using the ownership situation as an excuse so he can go and play in the snow.

  9. linkgaetz says:

I’m still hearing Jagr (Jagr??) to the Flyers….here in the Baltimore area….hard to believe that Ted wants to do that….anyone else heard this?

  10. Flyer_4_life says:

hey SABRESFANB, don’t forget that satan is a ufa at the end of the season. Gagne has signed a 3 year contract with the flyers.

  11. calflyers says:

    yep!

the price (for the Flyers) might be too high though…

  12. aafiv says:

The Flyers aren’t dealing for Jaromir Jagr. How could he help the Flyers when he is totally useless to the Caps at $11 Million a year?

Besides, he’s a wussie boy. Not Clarke’s type.

  13. Tradedude says:

Boston should trade one of their goalies (Grahame or Shields) and McLaren for a goalie (Irbe’s name keeps popping up) and maybe a prospect (Defense or Forward).

    I am thinking of:

    Carolina Gets: McLaren, Grahame

Boston gets: Irbe, Wallin, Car 5th pick

I’m not sure if Wallin is a good enough prospect, but should be good enough. Carolina could use Grahame as a back-up and he PROBABLY won’t wyne over for playing time. So he should be suitable back-up for Carolina, and McLaren would probably fit good as a 2nd or 3rd d’man finding himself behind Bret Hedican and maybe someone else who I can’t think of right now. Boston is getting a prospect which I take it that O’Connell wants since he was interested in Lundmark of the Rangers about a month or so back. Plus a draftpick which COULD be useful in say, the next 4 or 5 years. Or just could be a career minor leaguer and a deadweight player which is most likely.

Oates, wherever he goes, he’ll just demand another trade again. I think Oates should go to a team cabable of using a play-maker. I;m thinking of New Jersey or Florida because they need a play-maker to set the score on their favor. New Jersey struggles alot in the scoring category and Oates could be the guy to play-make them to score. I know you dav fans or whatever, hockey fans outhere are thinking New Jersey needs a scorer not a play-maker, but devs don’t have much of a play-maker. Maybe Gomez, but he is struggling alot, too.

Speaking of the Satellite Hotstove last Saturday, I also heard something like a 3-way deal. Here is what they said it would look like:

    Tampa Bay gets: McLaren

    New York Islanders get: Kubina

    Boston gets: Hamrlik

Seems fair in ways seeing McLaren’s downside is injuries, Hamrlik’s is he’s struggling this season and Kubina makes up for those negatives.

New York Isles don’t need a scoring defense, not saying Kubina is one, but they are smart for getting rid of Hamrlik who is struggling obviously this season. Finally, the Isles with a physical DEFENSE.

Justin Williams I think will stay in Philly for sure, anyway gtg now,

good article. u got 4 stars for my vote.

I know I am repeating things I have posted in the past, but look for these players to be possible members of a trade between Boston and Carolina:

From the Bs: Goalies Grahame, Shields, or Tim Thomas… also MacInnis or Zamaner.

From Carolina: Irbe… also Cole, Tanabe… and Kapanen and Battaglia are roumored to be available possibly.

  15. AvangardChistov says:

anyone who believes the ‘Oates as a whiner’ fabrication is a buffoon.

he’s been a class act in each of his NHL stops..

right before coming off the hand injury, he did some face time w/ Bryan Hayward during a road broadcast and the Ducks scored the first twenty seconds of his appearance..i know, what’s the point?

well, just to say he seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the team (e.g., his broadcast booth reaction to the goal; his being on the road with the team when he could have kicked it at home).

until the last five games or so, the Ducks have been consistent and playing far above expectation, so it’s not like the team is playing it’s typical brand of crappy, underachieving hockey, which would frustrate even the most saintly of players..

and on top of that, why would a playmaker like Oates be unhappy about having Sykora, Chistov as linemates (along w/ PP time w/ Kariya).

    ok, i’m done

  16. AvangardChistov says:

a friend of mine who is a rabid Flyers fan brought me on a road trip recently and i got a real good look at Dennis Seidenberg [vs. Sharks, Ducks, Kings]

he’s been paired up w/ Desjardins and i have to say, the kid plays w/ a great deal of poise, patience.

i’d say he’s the heir apparent Desjardins, or what’s left of him.

Flyers just need to trim some more fat then they’ll be in the thick of it.

but like someone else said, who wants Recchi’s huge salary or Primeau’s shitty attitude (i can’t believe he’s the captain of this team.

acquiring Michal Handzus and Kim Johnsson the past two seasons were the best two pickups this franchise has made in a while.

  17. BWbullies says:

JR is out of the question. Him and LeClair have a no trade clause.

  18. peanut_butter_shelf says:

I don’t think that Hamrlik is having the bad season that everyone thinks he is. He is coming off an injury that sidelined him for several weeks and has come back and been solid. Solid enough for 2 goal in a 2-1 OT win.

  19. peanut_butter_shelf says:

The Canes will not trade Cole for a defensemen. No way no how!!!! HE has way too much potential. Experts compare him to power forwards like Tkachuk. Tanabe however has been given a chance to live up to his potential but has struggled in this the Canes “all defence” philosophy. Much like Sandis Ozolinsh did.

Kapenen and Battaglia are available, but again, not for a defencemen. The Canes are DEEEEP at the D position and are looking to add some scoring threat, i.e. Anson Carter.

  20. Lint07 says:

You’re right I somehow forgot this trade rumor but Tampa Bay wasn’t just giving Kubina, they’d be giving Holzinger as well.

    Thanx.

  21. acebailey says:

On Cole… I find it strange as well, but there were published rumors about a month and a half ago that they were shopping Cole. I wish my favorite team could keep all of its good players and prospects, and easily trade away guys we don’t like. But sometimes you have to give up somthing to get somthing.

The Bruins would be a good trade partner, as they have so many healthy forwards that, even with Samsonov out, they constantly have healthy scratches. MacInnis, Zamanuer, and lets not forget Lapointe. Read: Karamanos hates the Wings. I don’t know if you heard the rumors about why the Bruins got him to begin with.

I don’t think the Canes want a D man either, but you will hear Mclarrens name, every time you hear a rumor about Boston.

I think McLarren would look good in Atlanta, but I don’t know how he would get there.

  22. acebailey says:

ESPN.com reports the Bruins aquiered Kristof Oliwa from the Rangers for a 9th round pick.

Oliwa was a quality player in Pittsburg, maybe he can get it back now that he is away from New Yorks poisonous locker room.

  23. NYIchooch75 says:

Totally agree with you. I’ll let you in on a little secret…this site is just loaded with Leaf, Ranger and Flyer fans/Islanders bashers. No matter what, everyone on the Isles sucks, has sucked and will suck. Why trade Hamrlik for Kubina, and thus allowing the other TWO teams in your conference to improve? Doesn’t make sense. Just a thought…

  24. peanut_butter_shelf says:

I wouldn’t worry too much about this trade rumor. If any of this were really going on it would be a 2-way deal with the Isles and Tampa as Tampa has realized the mistake they made in letting Hammer go. They want him as much as anyone else in the league at the D spot. Too Bad though, He is on Long Island and will remain there until the offer is too good to pass up, not for Kubina.

Their names are Recchi, Primeau, and Desjardins. These guys are names that will rise when needed. They have no problem staying on the top of their division. No changes are needed. What is needed is a healthy Leclair which will be prime and ready for the playoffs. This club is always in the top three in seeding when playoffs reach us. What will be different this year when they do get the #1 seed is the coaching. Hitchcock is one of the best playoff coaches. No need to worry about this team.

  27. allenbo says:

There is going to be no change. Especially the way they are coming around now. Clarke was just waiting for them to start scoring because he know they can. This teams lineup is among the top three in the NHL and they always, no matter what kind of slump they go through, end up in the top three in the East. Once a healthy Leclair is prime and ready for the playoffs, watch for this time to explode on scoring. The lines they can put out there are so deep, all of which can score. The third line of Handzus, Brashear, and Somik prove that. Nothing wrong with the net either this year, second in the East in Goal Against. One difference for the playoffs this year besides a deeper team, is a proven intelligent playoff coach. Hitchcock has what it takes. The team is ready, no changes needed. Make sure to follow the Orange and Black!

Jagr has no purpose on the Flyers. NO WAY. Useless for the Orange and Black. I agree. Team stays the same, no trade happening.

  30. THEMAILMAN says:

THE ONLY THING THAT CONTS IS THE PLAYOFFS AND THE FLYERS HAVE VETERAN PLAYERS WHO HAVE BEEN THERE AND PROVEN THEMSELVES. THE OVERWHELMINGLY PASSIONATE PLAY OF JEREMY ROENICK WILL BE A DRIVING FORCE THROUGH OUT THE PLAYOFFS. THE LOW GOAL PRODUCTION GOES HAND IN HAND WITH THE SYSTEM THEY ARE STILL LEARNING UNDER HITCHCOCK. LECLAIR’S RETURN WILL ONLY ADD TO CLUTCH PERFORMANCE IN THE PLAYOFFS.
