I don't know about that....... think of how much can come back the other way. A bona-fide superstar for maybe two first liners and a couple of second liners or talented role players? Suddenly your team looks deep...very deep. As much as I would love to have a prolific goal scorer that can score 50+, I would take two that could score 60 or more combined.

If someone offered me a 20% increase in my profession I would probably leave to unless the circumstances were bad (I am happy in my current job and wouldn't take it if I was going to be miserable or unhappy in the new one though). The difference there is I presume you're a middle income earning person like myself, a 20% increase makes a huge difference in our lives, from improving our standard of living, making us afford that slightly better car/house... etc. For someone making his kind of money I don't think 500k to 1 mil/year is going to make much of a difference.

At the end of the day it's a business and players can do what they want, i respect loyalty alot in a player whether it's with my Sens or for another team, it shows some character. I wouldn't want my team to ever shell out ridiculous amounts of money to a player like that nor have a player on my team that could care less about being here except for the money.

I don't respect athletes who are consumed by that much greed and I'll admit I often hope they fall flat on there faces when there ego's get the best of them. More often than not some fool eventually gives him the money but some fall flat on there faces. Take Fedorov in my example!! Also to switch sports A-rod in baseball is another perfect example, he's to my knowledge still the highest paid player in baseball, and opts out of his last 3 years at 25m/season or so as he wants someone to give him a 10y/350m deal citing the league revenue's are up from 3B/6B since he signed his original deal and wants more of the cut (not factoring in he really wasn't ever worth what he made to begin with).

I'm first going to clarify something! I'm not on this forum to start pissing matches with anyone and typically don't get involved. You know my allegiances I'm a Sens fan and although I can't say I'm to fond of the rival habs or leafs, I give respect where it's due and little if it's not deserved. I have nothing against any of there fans on this forum nor am I some punk teenager who will insult anyone who cheers for a different team.

That being said, you're referring to a different Fedorov incident than I was (Apparently he has many incidents!!!), you are right in the 1997-08 season Fedorov was an RFA holding out to again be the highest paid player on the team. I believe around 6 million-ish at the time which was more than Yzerman, Lidstrom, and Shannahan were making. Carolina did make him that offer sheet which included that 14 million payout if they made the conference finals which Detroit matched.

I was referring to a different incident from the 2002-2003 season where Fedorov was in the last year of his contract. The wings wanted to lock him up and offered him a long term contract worth 10mil/year (can't recall if it was 4 or 5 years) which he turned down as he wanted to become a UFA and thought he could make more money, Detroit later withdrew the offer and offered less. Fedorov realized nobody was going to give him 10 million during the offseason and obviously pride got in the way as he didn't want to go back to Detroit with his tail between his legs and he ended up signing for less money with Anaheim after all. Since that move Fedorov hears the boo-birds everytime he comes back to Detroit and if asked why he didn't take the original contract he's done everything from blame his agent, blame his separation from Anna Kournakova, or said he simply wanted a change of scenery (whatever.. he's never been the same since he left).

Anyways feel free to google it if you don't believe me or check one of these links.
http://espn.go.com/nhl/news/2003/0719/1582918.html
http://www.gorillacrouch.com/2006/12/10/ottawa-sun-weighs-in-on-datsyuk-contract-talks/

Now go back to your original post that you wrote about me and look for a quote you wrote in your last paragraph:

"it's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're stupid, then to open it and prove them right."

I think you just ate your own words!

I understand you stance on loyalty, but your idea that the Capitals are loyal to Ovechkin is skewed.
They didnt fight to the legal battles with the russians for him... they faught the legal battle becasue Ovechkin is money in the bank and they wanted him on their team... One player turned their organization from a team that no one cared about to a team that everyone wanted to watch. On top of that they did nothing to provide a supporting cast for Ovechkin in his rookie or second year. Only this year did they go out and pick up some talent, but if you ask me it is too little too late.
Also I didnt see why you would bash a player for trying to get a bigger pay check ... I like where I work, and the people I work with but if someone offered me a 20% pay increase I would hit the road running.

Yes it is nice to see players being loyal but I for one am looking forward to the bonanza at the end of the year for ovechkin... or the block buster trade that washington makes when they realize that he isnt going to sign there.
