Sources: Volchenkov not in Caps' plans

Contrary to a report out of Canada late last month that suggested the Caps are going to target pending unrestricted free agent Anton Volchenkov this summer, two sources have told me that the team does not, in fact, plan to pursue the Ottawa blue liner.
The Caps “are not going to make him an offer,” one of the sources familiar with Washington’s plans told me.

Volchenkov , if he hits the open market, is going to be one of the most heavily pursued free agents this summer. But because the 28-year-old shot-blocking, shutdown Russian defenseman could earn as much as $5 million per season, the math doesn’t really work given the Caps’ salary cap situation.

In the salary cap era, such an ambitious signing for a shot blocking D would be ludicrous. All salaries have to come down, especially goalies, However defensemen and petty wingers are asking for 2-3 mil. I have no problem paying high $'s for top end performers. but salary demands on July 1st usually are out of this world.

He is the type of player Washington should be going after…… but not at that price, atleast not the style he plays.

someone is gonna overpay him and end up regretting it a year later.Just ask the Maple Leafs (Mike Komisarik). Great player, just like Volchinkov, but a waste over valuable cap space.
