Suglobov Put On Waivers

TSN reports “The Maple Leafs have put forward Alexander Suglobov on waivers. He has not registered a point in 14 games this season and has been scratched from Toronto’s last eight games.”

He’s 25 and has barely been given a chance at the NHL level, 18 games total. Yes he hasn’t been unbelievable for those 18 games, but he hasn’t been terrible. I think that young players have to play a full NHL season before you can assume they are crap. Which is essentially what Toronto is saying since they wouldn’t get anything in return for him if another team were to claim him.

His salary has approximately 275,000 left on it. There should be a lot of teams willing to grab him, especially since that price isn’t a risk. He’s also a RFA.

Toronto may be doing this to gain more cap space, not much, but it should push their total to around 40 M. That means 4 M left over to snatch some player that could hopefully revitalize the team into the playoffs. Dare I say:

McCabe and Raycroft

Let the trade deadline rumors begin

as for the trade suggestion, if i were the leafs i'd ask for a pick coming the other way as well. but i dont see Chicago taking on both McCabe and Aucoin's contracts on their D (even with Khabibulin's contract going the other way).

just a note on the leafs record through 48 games:

    this year: 22-20-2-4 – 50 pts
    last year: 24-21-0-3 – 51 pts

and this year's team has more injuries, younger players, a new coach to adjust, and a more inconsistent team (defensively and in net).  this year's team has also scored way more goals too though and is harder working and quicker.

in the remaining 34 games for the leafs last year, they went 17-12-1-4, with 7 of those 17 wins coming in the month of April.

i believe that if the leafs are going to make the playoffs, they would have to go 18-8-5-3 in their remaining 34 games (starting with their game in Pittsburgh tonight) for a record of 40-28-7-7 – or 94 pts (and even that might not be good enough).

considering that the leafs have 4 games remaining against Buffalo, as well as a game against Nashville, 2 games against the Devils, and 3 against the Sens … this will be quite the accomplishment.

this is just to give a reality check to some leaf fans for this year and suggest the necessity for trading some key players at the deadline. hopefully JFJ also has a calculator in his office and access to the NHL standings.

Wellwood sucks, and I loved Nolan, so that deal is a bit of a toss up, but you're right, they gave up too much.

  3. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Maple Leafs versus Senators 1-3-1, with one game being entirely Raycroft's fault.

    Versus Sabres 2-2

    Versus Devils 0-1-0-1

I think they're perfectly capable of winning against all of those teams, but they aren't a mentally sound team. The Leafs under Maurice are like the Sens under.. anyone, they could have all the talent in the world, and still not be able to win, and when they don't have any talent to begin with, they're in REAL trouble.

  4. LeafyMcLeaf says:

By the way, you can probably note, I turned out to be right about a lot of topics. I really sucked in my predictions of how Anaheim would do this year, but wasn't I the one who was called crazy for saying the Blue Jackets or the Coyotes could surge close to a playoff spot? Was I not right about team Canada getting owned at the Olympics? I also said Bertuzzi would still be good, and he finished last year with 70 points, ahead of Martin St. Louis, and has seven points in seven games this year, and I was right at the beginning of the season saying Iginla and Brind'Amour should be MVP candidates.

    I am right about everything…

  5. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Why won't anyone just admit, he sucked.

  6. 92-93 says:

yeah, Suglobov sucked while he was up with the leafs. your point?

  7. 92-93 says:

wow, you are comparing Maurice's Leafs squad to all those talented but gutless Sens teams???

Nordiques you are a wordsmith. Way to go.

  9. mojo19 says:

the October 12 loss versus New Jersey was all Aubins fault, 7-6 in the shootout and up 6-3 going to the third. And that was one of the two worst games of the year from a leafs goalie, the other one was vs Vancouver the other night.

JS Aubin sucks. He's like Joseph, he makes easy saves look difficult because he plays back in his net.

  10. mojo19 says:

Everyone knows he sucked, do you think you're some kind of genius for pointing that out?

  11. Cleets says:

McCabe has a no movement clause.

    He can't be traded.
