SWEDES LOOKING TO BOUNCE BACK FROM SALT LAKE

Veteran Swedish players are returning to this tournament on a mission. The image of Tommy Salo taking a Belarus shot off the head and bouncing in is still fresh in the minds of many Swedes. And this time around the questions are still much the same; will the goaltending be able to hold in Turin? On paper the numbers seem to think the Swedes will be okay. Hendrik Lundqvist and Mikael Tellqvist are both putting up strong numbers in hockey hotbeds New York and Toronto, respectively. Lundqvist has played especially well putting up a 2.06 GAA and a .928 SP% thus far. Expect to see Lundqvist get the start but Tellqvist may see some action as well in the compacted scheduling of the tournament. Even though both tenders have put up good numbers this season it is still the biggest question mark as the Swedes try to re-establish themselves as one of the best hockey nations.

The defence is loaded with experience for the Swedish team and they hold lots of depth in the position as well. Nicklas Lidstrom will be the leader and catalyst of any Sweden attack from its own end or on the powerplay. Lidstrom has the ability to run a powerplay that is not often matched in the NHL. His rushing skills will be magnified on the open ice and with Sweden’s “Torpedo” system expect to see lots of long passes off the stick of Lidstrom. Mattias Ohlund holds one of the best shots in the league and will be feeding off of Lidstrom passes in the offensive end. Kim Johnsson, when healthy, has shown poise, maturity, and the lack of mercy of a veteran defenceman this season with the Flyers. He also has a tremendous offensive upside that will bode well for the second unit. Niklas Kronwall is also enjoyed a breakout year in 2003-04 although his game-shape may be in question after sitting out all season with a knee injury. Veterans Mattias Norstrom and Kenny Jonsson round out the top six with Christian Backman taking the seventh spot.

The Swedes have one of the most potent offences this game has to offer. With a top unit of Mats Sundin, Markus Naslund, and Daniel Alfredsson, and a second line of Fredrik Modin, Peter Forsberg, and Hendrik Zetterberg the Swedes offer a deadly one-two punch. Alfredsson and Forsberg are in a race for the Hart Trophy this season while Sundin and Naslund are instrumental to any attack, and can dictate the pace of a game. Modin and Zetterberg are two natural goal-scorers who will benefit from Forsberg’s vision. The Sedin twins will be a formidable checking line with P.J. Axellson, who has struggled offensively this season, but still remains a responsible defender. The top three lines will see the majority of ice-time with limited shifts given to the fourth-line unit of Jorgen Jonsson, Samuel Pahlsson, and Mikael Samuelsson. Mika Hannula from HV71 will most likely be designated the thirteenth forward. With all of this firepower and experience on the blueline, the Swedes have to be considered a contender. But, these international tournaments tend to come down to goaltending and in such a tight schedule every mistake will be crucial to a team’s standing. Will Lundqvist and Tellqvist be able to carry the load. Considering the level of competition they will be facing it will be very tough for the Swedish team to medal. Expect the Swedes to place out of medal contention in fourth place.

what happened in Salt Lake to Salo just sticks in your head, i mean, you feel bad and that’s a lousy way to lose, but that was funny too!

  2. eric_empire says:

I think BÅG has alot to do if he realy wants us to win this year. He needs to take the focus off Sundin, Modin for a while and make shure that the lines works good. Luckely Näslund got injured so we don’t have to deal with his underaceaving attetude…

And I have to add the the best players so far is probably Jörgen Jönsson, Mika Hannula and Ronney Sundin along with NHLer Sami Pålsson, Micke Samulesson and PJ Axelsson.

I also think the the current lineups with Modin, Sundin, Alfredsson 2nd Zetterberg, J Jönsson, Holmström 3rd Sedin, Sedin, Samuelsson 4th Hannula, Pålsson, Axelsson have to be shaken up a bit…

Modin have played like a big sac of potatos and should be moved, we can’t use Zetterberg there corse he is needed with Jönsson and Holmström in the 2nd line som to bring energy and some needed speed and ofence in line 1 i would make i Hannula, Sundin, Alfredsson…

  3. garyroberts7 says:

Ronney? Don’t you mean Mats Sundin?

  4. FoppaFlyers21 says:

Hockeybuzz is reporting in two separate articles that Forsberg will play tomorrow against Latvia.

  5. eric_empire says:

    Nope… I mean Ronney Sundin*.

Mats Sundin plays center with the Leafs

Ronney Sundin playes D for West Frölunda…

That roster above is by the way… WAY off.

Näslund replaced by Holmström (thank god for that)

    Norström replaced by Ronney Sundin

    Kim Jhonsson replaced by Hävelid

    Krowall replaced by Tjärnquist

Also Jörgen Jönsson plays C not LW

    * The same Ronney Sundin that turned down a kings randsom from the Rags 3 years ago and opted to stay in Sweden if hi didn’t get $5mil…. (He was 33yrs than with the famely in Gothenburg and whanted to make sure he ither provided for them finansialy or stayed at home).

  6. eric_empire says:

    Yes it’s true…

The lines will probably be as folloed.
