Sykora closer to being voted off the pond

A story in the Mercury News and in many other papers has made it clear that Petr Sykora was left out of last night’s game against the Sabres because a deal was close with “multiple teams.” Rumors have Sykora being a “perfect fit” in New York with the Rangers but no teams have been mentioned as of yet. The Ducks play Saturday in Montreal then Monday in Toronto. Brian Burke declined to comment on the rumors, but Sykora is VERY unhappy the way he is being treated and I am very unhappy having him in my Yahoo Fantasy Pool. TRADE HIM ALREADY!

Sykora and Ozolinsh are coming to Montreal in exchange for Souray, Bonk (they say he’s injured because he’s about to be traded) and a draft pick…

Would make sense for the Habs as they would pick up a scorer to play alongside Ribiero and Ryder and Ozolinsh would help them on the PP, where they really need help.

Bonk has been “a big ZERO” since coming to Mtl (no wonder the Sens got rid of him) and Souray’s play hasn’t been what everyone expected out of him (plus he has family issues and wouldnt mind moving to the west coast to be alongside his daughter) …

Salary wise, its almost an even exchange… Souray earns about 2.5M, as does Bonk, while Sykora earns 3M and Ozolinsh about 2M …

    Hope it happens…

“A number of teams are supposedly interested in acquiring Sykora, who is in the final year of a contract that pays $3.116 million, including the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers.”

    from http://www.thefourthperiod.com

  3. Beckfan5 says:

What makes you think the Rangers are interested in Sykora?

  4. Jeffrey198 says:

As a Montreal Resident and a big Habs fan, I would love to see Sykora and Ozolinsh come to Montreal, and Souray is really doing nothing and I agree that Bonk is a big ZERO..!!!!!!!

If this trade goes down Thank God, because this would be what the Canadians are missing an offensive defensman and a good winger

  5. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Sykora and Ozolinche are about as consistant as Bonk and Souray… 😕

  6. WangKumar says:

You are right, why would they want him. They seem to be doing fine without him. Their problem, if any, lies on the powerplay and their most glaring need is a puck-moving defenceman

  7. Scruffy05 says:

If you guys don’t want Bonk, why would Anahiem.

  8. Scruffy05 says:

    Brian Burke’s Anahiem checklist:

    1. Get rid of Federov. Check

Anybody else remember the infamous “One Federov is one too many.” quote about Fedor.

    2. Get rid of remaining Soviets. Check.

It is no secret Burke hates Soviet players. It surprised everybody when he brought Rucinsky to the Canucks last year.

    3. Ice team primarily of Canadians and Swedes (Especially a Canadian goalie… only a Canadian goalie will do). Check.

Burke dresses up each Hallowe’en as a Viking. He loves to create Team Sweden. This means, Montreal fans, that he doesn’t want Bonk.

    4. Piss off everybody around him. Check

But just wait a few years.

  9. movingfire says:

Anaheim is looking to dump salary so an even trade salary wise makes no sense…I could see a prospect going instead of Bonk maybe…

  10. zyphrit says:

Maybe he don’t score but Bonk is very grat on PK, so being trade maybe it will wake up

  11. Neely4Life says:

a huge reason why the sens always choked in the playoffs, not the only reason, Martin was there too, and Lalime. Those were the big 3.

  12. wingerxxx says:

Marcel Hossa seems to have gone into the tank scoring-wise, so I can see why Sather might think about adding Sykora. But I don’t really want to mess with what we have either, I’d like to see Hossa have more time to iron out his game. You’re right, the biggest need is a defenseman who can run the power play, or at least has a big shot. The current system just isn’t working on the man advantage.

  13. Marky2Fresh says:

    Bonk = Antropov?

  14. Marky2Fresh says:

    Burke Rules.

  15. habs_punk says:

I wouldn’t go that far. Bonk has some value on the defensive side of the puck, which is what Montreal brought him in for. They weren’t looking for him to light it up, he was automatically the number 3 centre. It would be nice to get some secondary scoring out of him, but it’s not like we were expecting a whole lot. I would definately place more value on Bonk.

  16. habs_punk says:

Don’t expect Hossa to come out of it. He always did that with Montreal, an initial tear and then a rediculous tail-off. I think he even scored a goal in each of his first 5 games with Montreal or something like that. He just has no consistency whatsoever.

  17. PTack says:

Why would they want an overpaid Bonk?

  18. Lint07 says:

    Here’s my trade proposal:

    To Montreal:

    Sandis Ozolinsh-D 2,75M$

    Petr Sykora-F 3,12M$

    total: +/- 6M$

    To Anaheim:

    Sheldon Souray-D 2,13M$

    Nicklas Sundstrom-F 988,000$

    total: +/- 3M$

Montreal gets their PP quaterback and their 2nd line winger while Anaheim gets younger with Souray and saves 3M$ in the process. Everybody wins. Sundstrom can be useful on their 3rd line and he is expandable here since we have too many players of his type right now. I’d be willing to replace Sundstrom with Higgins if Burke wants him instead.

  19. habsoverserver says:

Why did the Devils trade Sykora when he was part of their most successful offensive line that was instrumental in their winning a Cup?

I am glad that Habs fans are starting to agree with me that spending $3 million on Bonk was possibly the dumbest offseason move in the NHL. Considering the glut of overpriced third line checking centers, Habs management displayed extraordinary incompetence.

How could Bob Gainey have 18 months to fix the Habs greatest problem – no offense – and then spend $3 million on a forward who can’t score goals?

  20. Beckfan5 says:

He needs to shoot more and park his big ass in front of the net to get some garbage goals.

As for the D-man on the PP, I know everyone is saying not to make a trade that it will break up the chemistry. I so go for it. Make the right deal for a PP D-man. Trade some minor leagures or a draft pick, but only for the right guy. Malik and Rozival and Poti and Tyutin just aint cuttin it on the PP.

  21. Beckfan5 says:

That would be a surpise in any city if you bought in Rucinsky as a Russian, considering hes a Czech.

  22. Mullet says:

That Toronto Boston rumour has been reported at least 3 notable sources. CBS has reported it, Eklund has reported it, the other however has not been revealed. However, the deals are different from what the CBS said, the other two reported it would be Ken Klee, Nik Antropov and Justin Pogge for Glen Murray and either Nick Boynton or Hal Gill. However, other rumours have said the Leafs may need to switch Pogge with Colaiacovo if they want Gill or Boynton. However, I beleive this deal will happen very soon and the Leafs will be minus Klee, Antropov and Colaiacovo but plus Glen Murray and plus I would believe probably Hal Gill as he makes less than Boynton.

  23. robinson19 says:

Bonk and Rucinsky are Czechs, not Soviets, but then again, no one not even Russians are Soviets.

  24. oildude says:

Burke will put his stamp on this team and in time will be competitive. Knowing who’s in charge around there can’t be a bad thing.

  25. justafan says:

TSN is reporting that the Bruins are on the verge of aquiring Sykora; no mention of what is going the other way.

  26. robinson19 says:

I agree a Sykora/Ozolinsh package would greatly benefit the Habs, and they now have the depth up front to provide trade bait.

I don’t think the Bonk inclusion is realistic, yes Montreal would love to con someone into trading for him, but Anaheim doesn’t want him. I think It’s more realistic to surmise Souray plus a less question-marky defensive forward, like Bulis or Sundstrom.

With Bulis, Sundstrom, Bonk, Plekanec, Higgins, and Begin, the Habs have a surplus of good defensive forwards.

  27. justafan says:

I have heard this one too. I can’t see why the Bruins would want Antropov. I see ALOT of Leafs games and Antropov is quite unimpressive. I wouldn’t mind Klee for Gill though; that would finally be a good deal for Boston.

  28. MTLROCKS says:

Gainey is a bastard if he misses out on this trade

  29. Scruffy05 says:

I used the term Soviet to signify all players from the former USSR.

  31. caspien says:

I just want to add to this rumor that I am pretty sure that The Panthers were close to the deal for Sykora last night. Why do I say that? Because I was watching the sad Panther-Shark game last night and the announcers said that Mike Keenan was not at the game because he was in Buffalo watching the Sabres-DUCKS game. Then the next morning I heard that Sykora was benched because of a possible trade.

So look to see Sykora in a panther uniform soon. Hopefully not for Luongo UNLESS there is more included in the deal. Hopefully we get rid of Stumpel or Hagman or even Jokinen. Im beginning to wonder if this guy should be wearing the C. HAs anybody thought that maybe their slump is due to not having a consistent leader? Whether its in the dressing room or on the ice? I say give the C to Roberts, or Neiwyndyk until Bouwmeester, Horton or somebody else steps up and takes it from them.

  32. mojo19 says:

Not bad, I don’t know how much interest Anaheim has in Sundstrom, but that’s not a terrible trade. Montreal is the winner in my mind though.

  33. Lint07 says:

Sundstrom is nothing more than a throw in.

of course Montreal is the winner. Any team dealing with Anaheim will win because Burke only wants to cut some salary and sign players next summer.

Anaheim player can be had for dirt cheap.

  34. Beckfan5 says:

The Czech Rep. is not of the former USSR.

  35. habs79 says:

Repoted in 3 notable sources, not reliable sources. Every rumour I read that has been reported by Eklund is more lop-sided than the last. As for CBS they pay about as much attention to hockey as they do criket. Boston will not trade Murray to a division rival so he can burn them 8 times a year. It would have to be a deal that would outshine anything they would get from another team, and those deals won’t outshine anything.

  36. nyrules11 says:

They should look to building this team around Selanne since he has once again found his game.

  37. habs_punk says:

Sykora won’t be that impressive. He’d be a good addition to the second line after Kovalev and Koivu come back, but having to rely on him for top scoring would be almost as bad as having to rely on zednik for top scoring….. I see your point.

  38. tacitus says:

czechs are not of the former USSR. Czecks and Slovaks used to be one, they split, but were never part of USSR

  39. tacitus says:

Czechs were never part of the former USSR. Czechs were as much part of USSR as Gretzky and Lemieux were

  40. Komisarek says:

If the price is right, Sykora would be good addition, but I don’t want Gainey to over pay for him,, same for Ozolinsh.

  41. MTLROCKS says:

No he hasnt selanne still sux. Sykora is a much better player than Zednik and is more reliable. He is a dangerous player with great offensive talent. Jagr, Elias, and Sykora are the best Czech players ever.

  42. nyrules11 says:

ummmm Selanne has 16 goals this season. I never new that 10th in the league sucked.

“Jagr, Elias, and Sykora are the best Czech players ever.”

    ever heard of Ivan Hlinka?

Jagr is definitely the best, Elias might make the top 3 but Sykora No. Top 10, possibly top 5, not top 3.
