The Darkhorses of the 02-03 season

Here is a list of two players per team that I think will have breakout years this year. Part 1.Anaheim: Vitali Vishneviski, Paul Kariya

Vishnevski will evolve into one of the NHL’s top d-men. Kariya will flourish this year playing with one of the best play makers of all time, Adam Oates.

Atlanta: Dany Heatley, Iilya Kovalchuck

I think those two are self exclamatory

Boston: Joe Thornton, Nick Boynton

Thornton will be the best overall player in the NHL in a few years. Boyton is a very talented up and coming d-man.

Buffalo: Maxim Afinogenov, Dimitri Kalinin

Afinogenov is the next Pavel Bure plain and simple, the Bure of 10 years ago, not of present time. People who have followed the NHL for a while know what I am talking about. Kalinin is the best young Russian D-man in the NHL and hes gonna be a great player for years to come.

Calgary: Jarome Iginla, Robin Regher

Iginla tore the NHL up last year and will do so again. Hes not what you would consider a darkhorse but noone besides Regher who is another great, young d-man is worthy of reconition in calgary.

Carolina: Eric Cole, David Tanabe

Cole is gonna light the league on fire this year. In his rookie year he hit everything in his path and will continue to do so this year. This guy is a less offensive Joe Thornton. Tanabe missed the playoffs last year and thats the main reason for him to start out on fire. This guy can skate and is the D-man the canes have needed all along since they traded Sandis.

Chicago: Steve McCarthy, Jocelyn Thibault

McCarthy is gonna prosper this year and Thibault will definitly bounce back after a sub par year.

Colorado: Radim Vrbata, Martin Skoula

Vrbata is unbelievable he looked good even while playing with players who are little more recognizable if you know what I mean. Martin Skoula, this kid has come a long way since the finals against Florida a few years ago, playin wit blake, bourque, and foote didnt hurt either.

Columbus: Espen Knutsen, none

Espen Knutsen is the only player worthy of recognition on this pathetic franchise. Even though I give them credit, they are going in the right direction.

Dallas: Marty Turco, Mike Modano

Turco will emerge this year as one of the league’s best goalies. Modano will finaly have a breakout year, im not saying he hasnt been playing well, im just saying this is the year modano scores over 50 goals.

Detroit: Pavel Datsyuk, Jiri Fischer

Datysuk, this kid played amazing in the playoffs, he is fun to watch, much like Bure in his younger years, this kid is going to be a superstar. Fischer is big, strong and talented, this is the year he puts it all together.

Edmonton: Mike Comrie, Eric Brewer

Comrie is the best player on the Oilers straight up. He makes Oilers fans say Doug who? Brewer will show everyone why he is still playing in Edmonton.

Florida: Kristian Husselius, Roberto Luongo

Husselius is an emerging star too, and thats saying a lot, given he doesnt have an allstar cast in florida. Luongo is gonna be great too, again saying a lot, given he has crap on the blueline to work with.

LosAngeles: Jamie Storr, Zigmund Palffy.

Storr will beat out Potvin for the starting job and prove he cant be a #1 goalie in the NHL. Palffy will continue to lead the Kings in the West.

Minnesota:Marian Gaborik, Manny Fernandez

Gaborik is gonna be a superstar by next year, this kids got it all, except a surrounding cast, its a shame. Fernandez, the Wild’s heart and soul. Fernandez and Gaborik are the WILD.

Montreal: Saku Koivu, Jose Theodore.

Not darkhorses but what can u say about these two? Koivu will score 40-45 goals this year. And Jose is the NHL’s new “Dominator”

Part 2 coming soon!

Let me know what you think about part 1

    doug who?

i cant believe that he is worth 8 mill a season(on average)

  2. edmontonrules says:

The same thing they will be saying next season about all the players that the Rangers picked up. Probably even most of the FA’s that were picked up this year for extreme amounts.

  3. Slats says:

    your not serious are you?

Vishneviski is a kasper type of d man,he is defensive and hits awsome.

    Iggy already broke out

Boynton will become slowly a 30 point d man

Afiniganov’s time is done in Buffalo

Regher is a good stay at home d man

Steve Mcarthy may not even make the team, he is not offencive

    Klesla for columbus

Skoula never did play Florida in the finals, that was in 96, he was not even drafted

Well there is alot more but I am too tired.

How long have you watched hockey?

Don’t put hockey players names on there because you have heard of them before, do some research.

  4. bcuffari says:

This article has no logic to it whatsoever, why was it posted? Half of the players he mentioned have already broken out.

  5. boltsfan04 says:

Most of those guys have already had breakout seasons or are established players in the NHL. How will Comrie be better than Doug Weight??? He’s good but not quite that good. Not yet anyway. Do a little more thinking on part II.

  6. ProngerBlues44 says:

I know that you are trying to name players who will have big seasons, but thats not exactly “Breakout” seasons. Some of the players you listed, yes, they will have breakout seasons. But players like Modano, Iginla, Theodore, etc. have already broken out!

My description of a breakout player, just like most of the people of this site, is that the player has a good couple of seasons for like 2 years, then really turns on his jets and begins playing unbelievable! Like Iginla this year.

Now you named some players who will have big seasons. Like Modano; what your predicting is that he will play a huge role for Dallas this year, getting a great season statistically. He’s already had a breakout season.

But I am not ragging on you, I know you must have worked hard, so good job, just back your work up 100% and research a little bit more.

I think Boynton will be awesome in Boston! Someone said in another comment he will “slowly become a 30 point dman”…which is crap, he’ll be awesome next year. He already is awesome!

  8. Sane04 says:

stop saying kid because those “kids” are older than you .

  9. r_milley says:

Part 1 was crap so part 2 can only be an improvement over this.

You’d have thought that the hart and vezina winner would have to wait until the season after he wins those trophies to breakout!

or that a 32 yr old Mike Modano would have to breakout after a 77pt season!

    This is sad.

  10. titans says:

Ummmm hate to break it to ya but…THEY’VE ALL ALREADY BROKEN THE FRIG OUT YA PEE PEE HEAD!!!!! GOD DAMNIT!!

  11. devilfan says:

Isnt Mike Modano a little too old to be having a breakout season?

  12. NewYorkRangers says:

You’re never to old to have a breakout season, but he shouldn’t be mentioned, considering he broke out in his rookie year.

  13. Amazingoilers says:

I can’t believe that this site posted this, yet hasn’t posted the actual rumors I’ve written about. This article is a joke! It’s titled “Breakout Season” yet most of these players have already “broken out” or are established stars or soon to be stars in the league. All you really did was take 2 players that are already proven or that had great seasons last year and predicted them to do it again…… @ Modano getting a breakout season, um I think he did that a decade ago……Now why don’t you in part 2 pick players that haven’t actually broken out yet, that would be much more challenging. Like from Edmonton I think Jani Rita will bust out along with Jiri Dopita.

  14. devilfan says:

Duh Thats what i meant. Cmon

  15. r_milley says:

I’d be scared to see the record book if Iginla and Theodore broke out AGAIN!

  16. ManillaKilla says:

Damn. You really went out on a limb with those picks.

  17. ManillaKilla says:

Look for Peter Forsberg, back for a full season after the injuries, to have a breakout year.

  18. ManillaKilla says:

Seems like another case of expansion going bad. As the number of members increases, so do the numbers of ridiculous posts. Contraction at HTR?

  19. Heinzee57 says:

This item is a bit silly.

If anything, Jerome “Oops! I did it” Igin-la will have a drop off to let’s say 42 goals.

    No breakout there.

Modano may surpass last seasons numbers, but Billy G will be doing ALL the shooting in Dallas.

Afinogenov will have a great season because he is alone on that team and someone has to do the scoring.

Way to go out on a limb with Heatly and Kovalchuk.

Kariya had his breakout year in 95-96 where were you??

    Ok…. I’m done.

    Flyerfan, get off the drugs.

  20. whitneyjustrocks says:

I won’t repeat that all these guys already proven what they worth, you’ve heard it enough right now 🙂

Anyway, with the pathetic Blue Jacket roster, Ray Whitney manages to get 61 points in 67 games last season. And you forgot him, putting a guy who’s made the All-Star Game (by luck) for the last 2 years and that won’t be much much better. Anyway… that’s all I’ve to say.

  21. NewYorkRangers says:

It sure didn’t seem like it. Saying someone is too old to break out and saying that they broke out already is two different things. Duh.
